The problem with Nigeria and Nigerians is that we tend to copy everything we see overseas without asking for the owners manual.

If you have an Aso Rock Chief of Staff, why then do you need the SFG? Those two position, properly defined, are the same thing. In the United States, where Nigeria sheepishly copied the whole Chief of Staff to the Presidency thing, you don't have any position defined as the Secretary to the Federal Government. You do have a Staff Secretary, but that's not the same thing. The Staff Secretary actually works directly for the White House Chief of Staff.

Bottom line, Nigeria should learn to be original and quit sheepishly copying other people!

In every society there are certain functions that must be carried out. The people who carry out those functions might different titles, but there must be someone to carry out those functions. Therefore:


1) There must be someone to manage the head of government's office. You can call him the chief of staff (as is done in Nigeria, the US and many other countries), the principal private secretary (as is done in the UK and many other countries), the principal staff officer (as was done in Nigeria under military rule) or whatever title you want to give him, but there must be someone to manage the head of government's office and that person must regulate the flow of people into the head of government's office.


2) There must be someone that will coordinate the activities of the ministries, departments and agencies of government and act as the secretary to the cabinet.

That person might be called the cabinet secretary (as is done in the US and UK), the secretary to the Government of the Federation (as is done in Nigeria) or you could give him any title you want, but there must be someone to perform those functions.


It's funny that there's an ignorant person on this thread who claims that the position of chief of staff to the president of Nigeria is redundant because we have a secretary to the Government of the Federation. He claims that America doesn't have a similar system and therefore Nigeria shouldn't.

It's obvious that he is unaware that America has:

1) a White House cabinet secretary (who performs some of the functions that a Nigerian SGF performs),
