dre11:Is Atiku now not better by far to these people?,the US oath of allegiance clearly required one to renounce any previous allegiance meaning those with the US citizenship has ceased to be Nigerian completely,in fact anyone with a dual citizenship is a potential sabotuer of this country n should not hold any elective or public office at all. 2 Likes |

Hmmmmmmm, dual citizenship status, how would they lead right? Don't be surprised those of US do not pay accurate tax here in Nigeria, yet they can't afford not to make annual returns to the US despite living outside the country. Maddd fellows |

helinues: The constitution is clear on this. Saraki was born in the United Kingdom and did not acquire UK citizenship voluntarily, it was bestowed on him by default. The law allows you to have dual-citizenship as long as you got the citizenship by default (e.g. you were born in another country or one of your parents is from another country). But if you acquire foreign citizenship voluntarily (e.g you ran away from naija as an adult to go an hustle in America then applied for citizenship) then you are not eligible to hold any high office in Nigeria. 3 Likes |

helinues: As for the case of Saraki please note that only those who voluntarily obtained the citizenship of another country are disqualified from holding public office. by birth is not voluntarily. Wink |

Awol1: Yup! The usual blame it on Buhari scenario. I am sure our ex senate president Bukola Saraki had a U.K citizenship and he was taken to court bcuz of it and yet still he presided over the senate. Are you trying to be a hypocrite about it now that its someone you dislike?? Double standards, we know ur type.

Re: Dual Citizenship: Senate President, Speaker Risk Losing Seats by AreaFada2: 9:53am On Aug 25, 2019 |
helinues:By birth or through parents is different. The law says voluntarily swear allegiance. Meaning applied for as an adult. Not the foreign passport but the process of getting it. Kemi Adeosun born in UK wouid not be affected for example. Same as Saraki. Anybody born in Nigeria and acquired it through his/her parents who had a foreign citizenship will also not be affected. |
Re: Dual Citizenship: Senate President, Speaker Risk Losing Seats by d33types: 9:55am On Aug 25, 2019 |
Simplyleo:You guys don't read? Dual citizenship isn't the problem. The problem is swearing the oath of allegiance to another country. On one hand, You can be a UK or US citizen without swearing an oath of allegiance. This happens if you're a citizen by birth (Eg In Saraki's case) . You can run for positions in Nigeria with this. On the other hand, If you acquire citizenship by naturalisation you have to swear the oath and by doing this, you shouldn't be able to hold legislative positions in Nigeria |

Wow! Good judgement! So it's only us that have remained in Naija since that will now be eligible to contest. Thank God I didn't travel to all these yeye countries to wash plates,do security work ,mortuary attendant and be taking pictures in front of borrow pose cars like most naija are doing. I wonder how some people subject themselves to second slavery. Those that are jobless like invictus are doing scam and peddling drugs. I love Naija abeg! I remain here. The white man will come and see me. |

The law would surely have a lacuna, building upon which the provisions of the 1999 constitution would be set aside. dre11: |

I don't really understand this.Does it mean that a Nigerian who married an American an acquired a US citizenship cannot contest for The Nigerian Presidential Seat? |

Re: Dual Citizenship: Senate President, Speaker Risk Losing Seats by mmsen: 11:11am On Aug 25, 2019 |
helinues: Key word is 'voluntary'. Saraki was born in the UK, he did not go through any process to become a citizen of another country. |
Re: Dual Citizenship: Senate President, Speaker Risk Losing Seats by mmsen: 11:13am On Aug 25, 2019 |
tck2000: Do you become an automatic citizen or do you have to file to become? The ruling relates to those who elect to become citizens of other countries. |

felaismyhero post: yes we would.the day people like you decide to be in politics. Nay bros, Nigerian politicians has make politics a dirty game. My father got involved in politics just to make things right in our local government but the level of corruption, backstabbing, hatred for trying to do the right thing was too much. Let me not forget attempted assassination. |
