They want teachers to resume before the students grin Edo subeb must be high on osogbo weed.
Oga, teachers no dey go on holiday. It's only the pupils that government give break. They suppose to be on their duty post only that there wont be pupils to teach. Their claim is out of point sir. Are they not paid for the period they sit at home? What can u say about ministry staffers. Or teachers are not civil servants again. Laziness is worrying them.

Why would a union reject competency test for its members is baffling? Is it that there is something about their members incompetence which they are hiding? I pity these children's future with these crop of primary school teachers
The reason NUT is refusing the so called 'competency test' is because it doesn't trust the government's sincerity.

When the government of the day wants to do witch hunting, then, they introduce tactics like this. How far has the state government gone with renovation of schools, provision of teaching aids, improved staff welfare, sponsored training & retraining for teachers, curriculum development in schools. Na competency test be top most on their agenda.

Obaseki is definitely up to something evil!

The country has been battered by heavy rains since early July, affecting almost 200,000 people across 15 states. White Nile state in the south of the country has been hit hardest. The UN said that more than 37,000 homes have been destroyed or damaged while more flashfloods are expected. The rainy season continues until the end of October. All photos subject to copyright. The crisis rocking the primary school education in Edo State was further deepened on Sunday with the rejection of the new resumption date scheduled for September 2, by the State Universal Basic Education Board.

The state branch of the Nigeria Union of Teachers in a statement by its Assistant General Secretary, Mr Moni Itua, asked its members to disregard the call by SUBEB for resumption on September 2 for the first term of 2019/2020 school calendar.

Itua urged the board not to constitute itself into a “parallel ministry of education” as well as usurping the functions of the ministry by ordering a different resumption for primary school teachers in the state.

“In continuation of your board’s insensitivity to the human dignity and plight of our primary school teachers, the attention of the Nigeria Union of Teachers, Edo State Wing, has been drawn to your circular letter — SUBEB/A/7VOL.IIT/90 — of August 20, 2019, wherein you directed teachers to resume for the 2019/2020 first term academic session on September 2, 2019 on one hand and in a twist, further directed the same teachers to also resume a week earlier than the pupils (that is, on the 2nd of September, 2019) to enable them put all arrangements in place for effective take-off of teaching/learning process.

“Arising from the above directives by your board, the state wing executive council of NUT wants to inform you that public primary school heads and their teachers are not the ones to clean up classrooms or cut grasses in their school compounds, but shall only act as supervisors to the pupils in executing such assignments on their resumption, if your board lacks the capacity to provide or employ cleaners and gardeners in the schools.

“Your board’s unending shenanigans and arm-twisting of our teachers which are now dovetailing into full scale tramping on their rights should stop henceforth,” he said.

While directing school heads and their teachers to disregard the board’s circular letter regarding the September 2, 2019 resumption date, Itua urged them to adhere strictly to the union’s directives.

It will be recalled that the teachers had last week issued a three-week strike notice to the state government if it failed to meet its demands, including the rejection of competency test for teachers, release of the approved N60m subvention to schools and the payment of EDO BEST stipends of 2018 and 2019 to teachers, among others.

A circular from the human resources department of SUBEB dated August 20, 2019 had directed teaching and non-teaching staff in public schools across the 18 local government education authorities to resume school on Monday, 2nd of September, 2019.

The circular was signed by Mrs Ehigiamusor I.Lydia, director, human resources and management on behalf of the executive chairman of the board, Mrs Joan Oviawe.

It was copied to all education secretaries and local government education authorities across the 18 local government areas.

Are you saying the union cannot be part of competency test process from start to finish or are they afraid that competency test will reveal their incompetencies ?

If only you know the level of intrigues and manipulation involved in Nigerian's own brand of bureaucracy and government procedures you wouldn't say that.

Most Nigerians are completely ignorant of how things work. They just jump into discussions and expose their ignorance. It is ridiculous if not stupid for someone to think teachers sit at home throughout the holidays

Is it not normal for teachers to resume before students? Teachers are even supposed to go to work during holidays except public holidays and when they are on leave.

Even abroad public schools are not seen as qualitative as the private run schools. Going by the infamous Nigerian factor, going to a private school hasn't completely eliminated the problem either.

A whole lot of the private schools (especially the mushroom type) are just well packaged. Most of them also cut corners, employing under-qualified personnel, bribing regulatory officials, engage in examination malpractices etc.

The exception are probably those that either cost an arm and leg or owned by proprietors with integrity (which is in short supply).

The truth of the matter is quality education has declined and I still refuse to see the teacher as solely responsible for that.
