He bought a world class central defender like Desailly and put in defensive midfield to play in front of a defence that was already probably the greatest ever seen. At the same time benching flair/attacking players like Savicevic, Gullit etc that he considered defensive liabilities.

They didn’t score goals but they didn’t concede either. About 10 teams scored more than them, yet they won the league.

Van Basten was more complete. I don’t think he had a weakness on the pitch. Was unlucky at major national competitions apart from Euro 88 BUT he owned the leagues and European Cup.
R9 was better though.
These 2 are at the upper echelon of strikers. They are all time greats.

Gullit is a player I feel the passage of time has been less kind to. He has been forgotten.

That Milan team was an absolute juggernaut. They were the best defensive side I’ve ever seen. Tassotti, Costacurta, Baresi and Maldini at the back. Albertini and Rijkaard shielding the defence. They were impossible to break down. Gullit, Van Basten, Donadoni and Massaro had the quality to score and usually one was enough. Rossi was such an average keeper but he didn’t need to be any better.
