from actual farms we have done with those two wonderful crops I will say a good pepper variety will beat garden egg(ge) hands down on profitability, one reason is that when rain stops managing a GE farm get tougher due to increased fruit borer attacks and red spider mite, also the increased heat will make sure that futher production is surpressed due to flower abortions, but pepper on the other hand enjoys diverse weather and thrives in the hot dry season,so you will harvest pepper more because it's a perennial crop,I have seen a lady farmer harvest a pepper farm for more than 2 years,so you see a well managed pepper farm I suspect will beat most veggies due to the long periods it's usually harvested.we have once had five pepper plants we used as pilots ,they fruited for 3 years.

it depends on the variety that commands premium prices in your area, some location prefer the greenish variety, light greenish, whitish yellow or white with green stripes, but I have a strong suspicion that the white/greenish stripe type found commoly during the dry season will yield more because it seems to survive and remain productive through the dry condition,I can't place the name of the variety but it must be one of this four varieties,(1)Bello,(2)djamba(3)kotobi(4)yallo.

This was exactly the same method I once used, as advised by @Okoroemeka. I dug a hole and buried the manure there.

However, I have a problem with it. Do u think the nutrient in the manure will be available for the veggies, if planting is done say two weeks after burying the manure?

I'm asking cos I've heard such nutrients are "gradually" released to plants, which takes time.

Lemme also ask this, @Farmtech, @Okoroemeka, @Vosquare and other cuke farmers, how many cukes do u think a land space that is a little below half plot can contain?
This is my current farm size and I want to maximise it fully.

(I already have 100bags there, which I'm expecting to contain 200seeds.)
.
whether u bury the manure or not, the nutrient will be available even after 1yr, though rain will leach some nutrients. Burying prevents nitrogen loss in the form of ammonia gas. Also, it is good to combine manure with chemical fertilizers bc chem fertilizers meet plants' needs faster.

Cukes are normally spaced 60cm apart if you stake. I don't know how well closer spacing will be.

[quote author=FarmTech post=81743795]Hello Okoroemeka. Pls hav u ever encountered bacteria leaf spots? If yes, what was your experience.[/quote that disease crushed our avenir pepper farm last two years,it's caused mainly by poor sanitation, like wearing dirty infected cloth and going inside the farm while it's still wet or early morning, also steady rainfall is another factor that breeds the disease, one proactive measure to use is to maintain proper spacing between crop to ensure good ventilation and fast drying of foliage,FAO recommended spacing for hybrid pepper is 5×5 feet, but we are using 5×4 feet, also take the issue of pruning seriously, large old leafs must be removed to help ventilation and during very rainy periods a weekly spray of copper + mancozeb fungicide will really help in checkmating any infection, remove and dispoe any leaf with the yellow frogeye spots on it,also removed any infected crop and dispose.

Exactly! Dissolve the fertilisers with sufficient water in large barrel and then connect to drip irrigation using the venture.

for manual fertigation, 1 tablespoonful of fertilizer is used for about 20 litres of water. Anything above might be dangerous.

Thank you so much. I actually used NPK 20:10:10 at 3WAP, I've lost the entire field though they all died, I will be following the recommendation on the new field now.

Good day sir.

Sorry to hear about your loss. You can try our composted Insect Frass, called NatSoil. If you apply it 2 weeks prior to planting NatSoil is guaranteed to prepare your soil for germination and fruiting stages, and halt pest attack.

NatSoil contains chitin which crops use during germination and fruiting. An optimum amount of chitin fortifies the soil, attracting beneficial microbes that breakdown chitin into compounds easily mineralized by plants. Thus at critical stages crops will require less effort to find chitin and the soil will already have the nutrients and microbes to fortify itself from pest attack.

Please contact me on WhatsApp (08176499981). I will like to get a sample to you. I believe NatSoil will help regenerate your soil and the reverse effects of synthetic fertilizer this past season.

I guess you feel 60 is too much. Everyone with his own choice. I dont think 60cm is too bad especially if 2 seeds per hole is used. Some use 30, 45, 50, 60cm. 60cm apart minimize over crowding which can promote disease outbreak especially this raining period.

Instead of 60cm for 2 seeds per hole, wouldn't 30cm for a seed per hole better?

Wow what a read... So it took me 2 days to go from page 1 to page 39. I must honestly commend Mr Emeka for this thread, it has really broaden my knowledge though I am still far from where I want to be.

It's past 2 am and can't sleep, pondering and calculating on my next move.

My little story

I got a job, started on the 1 first of August and quit on the second because I am determined to make success out of farming. Not like I have all the needed tools and resources but I believe with kind people on this forum, I will be able pull it off.

Right now, I am really counting on Everybody from @okoroemeka to @Wizs2019, @FarmTech @FMCASH and a host of others I may not have mentioned.

I currently have 1 hectare of land close to ofada in ogun state and I have commenced land preparation basically on hermicide and ploughing.

I intend to plant 3 different crops on the land including cucumber occupying one acre. I have plans for drip irrigation, staking etc.

I was thinking pepaper on the other acre but since Oga Emeka is advising against it due to rain I am thinking of replacing it with another crope.

While on the last acre I intend farming potato on it. Just to have a balance of from a high risk to low risk crops.

I am hoping with your kind advice, gestures and help I will be able to pull this off.

@Wizs2019 I will really apprecrate it if I can come meet you in person on your farm.

Once aagain, i am glad to have come across this page. Thank you
Good to see youre taking a bold step,i wish you all the very best. I stay around Ofada, mokoloki to be precise i wont mind visiting your farm sir

Well, I also feel the same way. 60cm is about 2feets apart, which is more than the space between sacks if one uses sack.

Most times, I just use 1feet, then 2seeds per hole, though as you mentioned overcrowding is the main issue. Also, they tend to pull down the staking ropes, considering I haven't really learnt how to stake properly.

Hi, I am glad I am taking the step myself. I am giving the project my all. I am still reading and trying to come up with a more suitable approach to my planting. I am still going through oga @okoroemeka and @Wizs2019 approach, hopefully I will have a balance approach.

I have not started disturbing my ogas because I want something more concrete on ground before doing so. My 1 hectare has been ploughed, I was suppose to concluded on beds this week only for me to get tpaid the farm yesterday and noticed the workers haven't done much, not their fault though, the land has a lot of elephant grass so we are doing another ploughing.

A truck of manure has been deposited on the land, though we will use 2 trucks. I have equally gotten drip irrigation system.

So all we are waiting for is for the land to be ploughed the second time so that it will be easy to make beds and set the irrigation. Then I can start disturbing my ogas for guidance.

I was suppose to send @Wizs2019 email but I am having challenges changing my email on nairaland to the one I can access. I still need that guidance.

@olakunleben16 it's not a problem at all if you would like to visit. In fact I need someone that can link me to abokis that stay around and can make beds, I need them urgently. I need more worker to hasten the process.

the only thing i will tell people interested in farming is that there is a lot of money in it,

i mean you will gain from it if properly done.

And the only issue affecting a small scale or a new farmer is capital.

No business in this life that does not require capital.

But the way am reading and seeing things here in this agricultural sectors,
its just as if we must use some certain chemicals and things before we succeed on farming.

Let me just tell you something,
manures and compost tea to me is all about experimenting and testing.

so you can be looking for the once that will benefit your crops on the long run.

Thats why i dont waist money buying poultry manure and the rest.

There is an easier way to get manures and its for free.
This free manures makes the leafs of the plant to be fully green so to tell you it supplies large quantity of nitrogen and other plants nutrients to it.

All the crops i have really used them to plant are all showing the same thing,

all looking healthy and seems to be doing well.

I got this from a pro farmer and he showed me how its been done.

Anyways to me farming can make you some real profits in the long run

I don't believe in your philosophy of not using agro chemicals for intensive farming or less you are still planting few crops in your backyard,if you try like a few thousand crops on an acre you are more likely to choke on the organic mixture of baking soda, garlic ,liquid soap and pepper,we did an okra test farm and thought that we can be spraying it weekly like other veggies but we were wrong, the plant attracts all manner of insects I have never seen before on my 20 years of farming, they congregate and feast happliy on the leafs,I pity any farmer that wants to use organic farming on a big okra farm,he will be frustrated.we finally started treating it twice weekly,if you look closely at that okra pics you will see holes caused by those devil insects.

The cucumber test site between cu 999 and monalisa is 41 days today and final results are out ,comparing the vegetative growth, number of lateral shots, size and greenish of leaves, the size of fruits, number of fruits per plant of CU999 against ML is like comparing a D10 bulldozer to a Chinese bicycle, the growth and production of the ML is so poor that I pity who will plant it alone on a commercial basis, the two crops received equal treatment and dosage of fertilizer, manure and co,but I decided not to post any pictures until the day of first harvest,so every one will see how completely embarrassed monalisa will get, there are simply some cukes varieties that are not meant for commercial farming and monalisa is one of them, let me reserve my comments till first harvest in 4-5 days time.

@emeka okoro... this is totally unacceptable, you don't draw a line of conclusion like that.. I have farmers around that end that can testify to germination and yield rate of monalisa... south east stakeholders love to plant saira, nandini and kayin.. I can boldly tell you that mona lisa is a good variety if you have probably done it well... Good practice is the key.. check some of my farmers yield ..
