Do you know that the colonial Nigerian police force were not allowed to use guns but only sticks to enforce the law?

That is why they got the name "olópàá" from the Yoruba people which translates to "A person with a stick"

shocked

Since they don't use batons anymore but are synonymous with bribes, is it safe to call them 'egunje' now?

This batons we're enough during the colonial rule because Armed robbers weren't also carrying guns before the civil war.

Although, organized armed robbery gangs was started in Nigeria by Bello Jaguda (a former failed musician from Ilorin who moved to Lagos) in 1920, their weapons were mostly limited.

After the civil war, a large number of Nigeria who already knew how to operate guns were disengaged into the civilian population. This was the beginning of sophisticated armed robbery in Nigeria.
