Its possible, but I would suggest getting a short stay for maybe 2-3 weeks and understand which area works for you. Some films regret where they stay especially if their place of work is far from the house. Some can't wait to leave downtown apartments, but have to wait till their lease is over. But who knows...you might love the place too! Try signing a short lease of 6 months just in case

Is it possible to arrange permanent accommodation prior to arrival in Canada. I need your kind input if you've successfully done this or know someone who did.

Use neuvoo tax calculator. It shows you an estimate in each province, in weekly, monthly or yearly.

I've booked an Airbnb for 3 weeks. Let's see how it goes from there.

Sorry @MissChristine I can't fathom this pm thing . I saw you sent a message alongside a couple others but couldn't find it in my mail.
I feel Q&A should be discussed on the forum for reference purposes.

I was actually writing a detailed story (shortlanding-NCA exams- Calgary social life with pics) on MS-word a few weeks back but somehow I lost the file. Been tired and super-busy to start from the scratch again . I guess I'd drop some in at intervals.

Taking a cue from @Vcole's suggestion, I'd start from generality (official website links et al) to particulars if need be.

For every Foreign-trained lawyer (FTL) looking to practice in Canada, you MUST challenge (write) the NCA exams (it's an open-book, no NCA-past-questions handout which has a Pass/Fail grading system where 50 and above 'issa' Pass grin)

Your go-to website: https://flsc.ca/national-committee-on-accreditation-nca/ All the info you need is there.

NCA assessment process: https://flsc.ca/national-committee-on-accreditation-nca/applying-to-the-nca/

five step process involved in each NCA assessment;
1) You submit your application with required documentation and payment;
2) The NCA reviews and assesses your credentials;
3) The NCA notifies you of assignments or deficiencies;
4) You complete your assigned requirements; and
5) The NCA issues a Certificate of Qualification.

NCA is just the first step as each province has it's distinct requirements to apply for admission into their law society. My province of interest is Alberta and if it's yours as well,then you'd find these links useful -

1. https://www.lawsociety.ab.ca/lawyers-and-students/membership-services/internationally-trained-lawyers-and-graduates/

2. https://www.lawsociety.ab.ca/resource-centre/student-resources/beginning-again-internationally-trained-lawyers/

Other FTL's can chip in requirements for other provinces.

I was deliberate not to do a summary by providing official links as I believe if you need to actually read up from the website. I guess that's it for the general section. The other post(s) would address some particular questions with my experience in view.

I think I’m probably the most silent observer here, only fair i share my experience.
Flight experience—-
I’m a single applicant so i travelled last week with just 3 check-in. Luggages (had to pay for the extra one), went with ethiopia airline a mistake I won’t make again (i had a 15 hrs flight from Addis Ababa to pearson airport). Well the flight was really tiring but the in-flight entertainment and food was decent (also with really pretty air hostesses)and i made sure to drink as much red and white wine I could helped me to sleep better.
Landing—-
So we arrived toronto in the morning, really great weather could see the sun was out already, went through immigration and I really spent time on the line (was actually a bit tipsy from the drinks i took so i left the airplane late) did the normal immigration process i had more than 10k with me so i had to declare it, i filled some forms was made to sign my landing document after I got my sin number and mailed it to my brother’s address in Etobicoke (this is not my first time in Canada been visiting every year since 2013). Took my luggages from the terminal (5) then gave the immigration officer my declaration card. I then ordered a lyft to take me to my brother’s apartment (note when you order an uber or a lyft make sure you go to terminal Q, its on the ground floor so take the nearest elevator downstairs because when you enter the arrival terminal you’re actually on the first floor).
Post Arrival—
So my brother was at work when i arrived( he told me where to get his keys from) settled in well took out all the foodstuffs i got and (i made sure to pack enough alomo and origin when coming it’s really pricey here). Luckily for me he cooked the day before so i microwaved my food had my bathe and took a nap. Wasn’t that jetlagged so I went to the nearest TD bank opened an account( the cross rate wasn’t that good but i had no choice, wasn’t comfortable carrying so much cash) went to the nearest lcbo to get liquor then i took a lyft to see a friend at Mississauga then went shopping at square one mall.

So far it’s been really great since my status now is a pr not a visitor I’m entitled to more benefits and opportunities. So I’m apartment and job hunting at the moment and just praying to God for the best.

c/o my husband nairaland account,i am really impressed and more determined to relocate to canada when i read various posts on here, i spoke to an agent who said i can work as nanny in Canada but my papers will be processesed from there and his fees is 800k he also gave another option no deposit till visa is out for 1.5m. I am just been sceptical about this whole thing,i want something i can do my self,i would even prefer getting a school that will accept my 800k deposit rather than paying that to an agent. Pls house are there any schhol suggestions?Or other possibilities of getting it done besides express entry. My husband has given up on my disturbance of me relocating abroad to work and study and gave an advise that,if i find a genuine channel he is ready to sponsor. Honestly me am sick and tired of this naija and i want a better life for my kids.

Hi,

Conventional wisdom is that you shouldn't use an agent. Apart from extra fees, there is the very real and likely possibility that you'll be scammed.

Instead study the express entry thread https://www.nairaland.com/5187408/canadian-express-entry-federal-skilled

This is for the HR professionals in the house. Can someone please guide me on the pathway to obtaining a CHRP using a SHRM-SCP. I’m about to write the exam from Nigeria, so I would like to know if I’m doing the right thing or if there are other options.

Thanks

Landing gist
One week old in Calgary today
Family of 5
We flew Lufthansa from ph to Abj,weather was so bad and we experienced turbulence all the way to Abj.flight from abj to frankfurt wasn’t bad,they kids slept all through,we had 8hrs layover at frankfurt,it wasn’t funny at all,we finally left for YYC,inflight was just there,didn’t eat any of the meal,they kids too rejected,thank God i packed their cereals
We finally landed and went through immigration,no agricultural check, came out and a friend was there to pick us up,my hubby had to follow the car carrying our luggage,we went straight to our apartment,we were able to get a 3 bedroom before arrival,best decision ever..
After 2 days the kids fell ill,cough,catarrh,fever and vomiting,it has been really tough for us,thank God for the few medications i brought from naija,fever is gone now but they are still coughing,last night i came down with serious fever up until this morning,i hope we pull through this phase asap

Good day great people.
Ever since PPR, Its been so eventful from one arrangement to the other and everything seems to be happening so fast.. All praises to God almighty.

Pls I'm planning to land by this month ending and I have been having a lot to think about and I will really love your advise and input in shaping my movements after all what are family for.. Lol

Firstly I plan to shortland and the reason is I need to come complete a project at work and sign out finally. So I have this issues bothering my mind... I need to get my PR card before returning to naija and from all indication, one may not know exactly when it will come out. So Pls how long can I stay hoping to get it.

If I can't wait/stay too long, what document can I probably travel with when coming in next to Canada cos I don't intend to stay to long in naija once I return.

Secondly is the issue of accommodation, and I have read here people getting one before they land, I'm PNP and my province is Saskatchewan. I will like to also get such assistance in securing an apartment in Saskatoon... Pls help me anyone in that region kindly lend a hand.

Finally can I carry as low as 2.5k CAD in cash while I have the rest in bank?

Kindly help with responses. I really will appreciate ur input

Two here. One is my baby girl and my number 1 fan and we were both born in July

(It was madam that typed that intro for me o)

LANDING GIST
2 singles and 2 weeks old in Canada

One has been asking me that I have to share our landing gist on this forum because we only found out about nairaland months after we submitted.

We sha undercover decided to travel together for this move to Canada even though we told our family we were doing separate waka. But as a sharp guy, decided to change flights last minute so we could be on the same flight. We flew Westjet from Gatwick to Calgary

Pre Travel Gist.
Basically filled with visiting families and friend all over the UK and doing more travelling than I have done since living in this country. Madam One spent her time researching on accommodation (she secured a 2bed through word of mouth for herself, I will rough it with the guys for now as man never marry yet ), different banks and their charges, SIN, Job hunting, CV and every other necessary task she did expect packing. She registered us for pre arrival services but we no get any time to do am.

Travel Day.
We travelled separately with our families and met at the airport. I was now forming surprise to my soon to be MIL that "ahh mummy ki ni eshe ni bi" (what are you doing here) Trust my naija mother to say "mo wa pomi" ( I came to fetch water) . They all saw through our plans sha. We went to self check in. Bought extra luggage cos airline does not come with luggage allowance. WestJet is the worst. Thankfully all bags were below 23kg as per frequent flyer and carefully weighing them the day before. After the whole checkin was done. Snapped pictures with our parents then we all went to a pub at the airport for a final british breakfast "cos we're bri-ish init..."

Flight food was ok. Inflight entertainment was good. One and I sat together and slept for most of the flight. This is our first time flying together but she was so on point with everything. Had all our docs ready etc. We gisted and talked about our new life we're about to start in this country. I am the worrier. She is the planner. Flight from London to Calgary went like a breeze

Landing
We landed Calgary, went through to the queue for self check kiosk and had our passport scanned by the machine. Then directed to another woman who put E on our receipt and asked we go to the room with the big E on it and we can collect our luggage before going there. Waited for about 20mins before our bags came through. Mistake we did was that one of us should have gone to the E room while the other waited to collect the bags. Cos there was another queue in the E room when we finally got in. Spent over an hour till it was our turn. They asked just the basic question if our marital status had changed. We went to different counters and still said single because not yet married. Got our copr stamped. Gave them One's address for PR card to be sent. They gave us a paper to show the custom people on our way out. That was it! No welcome to Canada or any greeting. I guess the agents were tired.
Connected to the wifi at the airport. Booked an uber and went to the apartment. We were both really tired so we slept off. I woke up and vamoosed to my friends place.

Next morning One described how to get to the Service Canada, we met up there and got our SIN. She checked distance to the nearest bank and had it on the map. We strolled to RBC where I opened an account and they gave me a 2k credit card. Not too far was a CIBC where she went and got a 1500 credit card and opened an account. The agent was really nice and explained everything to us. We did not want to open with the same bank so we could see what other banks had to offer.

When we were done at the bank, we went to the Registry to do our health card. It was in the same area as the banks. Really easy to navigate and find. Registered for the health card with the proof of address we got from the bank. We tried to change our UK driving licence but we were told we needed to bring another proof of address. So we'll do that later. At this point we were both really tired so we walked around and found a restaurant to have lunch.

So far...
Calgary is very big in comparison to the UK or Nigeria. I hired a car so that we can get around easily. The transit system can't be compared to the UK. You need to drive here. Things are also very expensive. We both found ourselves constantly converting to pounds or naira when we wanted to purchase anything. We've started job hunting earnestly and sending out resumes everywhere. No interview yet but we both hope we find something soon and we can settle down and relax finally.

Thanks for reading to the end.
