This Toyota, Hyundai and Civic trichotomy, is coming up due to the current state of ehailing and the need for ROI as soon as possible, otherwise, it wouldn't come up in the first place.

Like eherbal said, for ehailing, due to the current state of things, go for any car that can allow you recoup as soon as possible, and from the looks of things, the Civic 03 fits that narrative.

But comparing a Corolla with that Civic is blasphemy, them no be mate. Corolla na him grandpa in all ramifications abeg. Hyundai's are rugged, but the leg go always go injury. The only Hyundai, in my experience, way the leg correct and engine strong is the Sante fe 2012 ix4. There could be others though

Let the Corolla gang enjoy their peace while the Elantra goons flex with theirs.

The Civic guys should do likewise... Even the Camry guys too.

Corolla serves ehailing well in Naija for many reasons you & others mentioned. Something I don't think anybody had mentioned is that mecs like repairing it, and the parts are easily found in the market.

It is overhyped for it's ruggedness as I believe a '98 Camry (though not for Uber use) is more rugged

True

Anybody and everybody dey repair corolla. It is the GES 101 in any Kazeems shop

Dont quote me ..but the car god on nairaland said you can get a (used corolla) naija used for 1,350,000. So with your 1.2m naira just add small money join am to 1,350,000 and buy the Corolla.. And pryyay to God that in the next few months that you dont come to nairaland complaining.. And the complain usually starts like this ..

Car Owner: Please nairaland, I need your help.. My corolla that I bought short oil

Nairaland: how much oil does it short and is there any leaks

Car Owner: There is no leaks anywhere, and I had normally top the oil every 2k miles

Nairaland: check the exhaust for smoke ,white smoke or blue smoke .

Car Owner: I have check there is no smokes at all

Nairaland: check the pcv valves

Car owner : have check the pcv valves and it seems ok

Nairaland: what oil have u been using

Car Owner : have been using 20w50 ,but let me check with the previous owner.

Nairaland: plz check o

Car Owner: the previous said 20w50...

Nairaland: but the oil cap said 5w30 is the rite grade

Car Owner: where can I buy 5w30..

Nairaland: we have oyel sellers in the forum cc: dru23,myparts, radauto ,Gazzuzz

Car Owner: so if I buy the 5w30 the oil will not short again?

Nairaland: just continue using the 20w50 ..20w50 is very thick and it will burn much slower than 5w30..

Car Owner: God bless you sir. I will continue using the 20w50

*************** Few months later *****************

Car owner : Please nairaland, my Corolla is smoking all types of smoke, blue smoke, yellow smoke all types... I took it to my kazzem .. He said I need a new engine and I dont have money to buy tokunbo engine...

Nairaland: well your mechanic is rite . You need a new engine

Car Owner : car I buy for 1,350,000 and it needs new engine . already . I thought Corolla na strong car .

Lol,so funny. I can never buy a Nigerian used car, unless I know the owner and maintenance history.... Mind you I only use Mobil 1

That's almost not true sir.

Mr. A buys a Toks corolla for 1.6m
Mr. B buys a Toks Honda Civic 1.2m

After 3 years if they are both on Ehailing either rental or HP. then Mr. B must have made two times his money while Mr. A will almost have made nearly one and half his. Then they decides to sell....

Mr. A sells for 1.1m
Mr. B sells for 600k

Difference is.... You know what's up.

So some1 will buy d car used for uber/bolt 1.1m? Hmmm! D kind of tinz I read here, we just have to keep learning. In as much as I'm trying to avoid the corolla/civic myth/reality, I'll like for us to see things from business angle first. I think purpose should b paramount in life, corolla is far far stronger and rugged to civic, no doubt about that... With my Hyundai I can blaze 140 and b d one warning myself u r running too much, but with civic, when I'm blazing 100 d car will b warning me u r running too much, I can fill d balance on d wheel already.... My civic is just 3 months old and I have gross what I spent to get it and can still sell for 50/100k less of the price I got it, soh! I feel abit peaceful now, knowing I'm saving and in a bit I'll hit net and feel free to know whatever come afterward is profit for sound decision (Thanks Dru). Do I intend to sell? Nope! I'll buy another car from d proceeding by His grace or shift to viable things, not longing for civic again cos is far from choice ride. Too many fallacies I have read ever since I found dis page, but we share different grace, altitude matters in business as well, I think we should always look at things from the business angle, the connection and narrative u pray to write, not double checking price of resale, I pity for anybody that buys car that have been used for uber for 3yrs.

The only down side of civic for me is the the back legs/shock/shaft, the way d thing falls ehn, yesterday I took a client to Agbara and on my way back I took Festec road to Orile with 3 ppl at the back, it was a terrible experience, I was just driving with frown

We can agree to disagree ...in my honest opinion here.. Civic 03 to 05 are equally as strong or might be stronger than the Corolla. Corolla has a better transmission, but civic engine or equally as good or even slightly better than the Corolla... in terms of looks Corolla 03 looks better than Civic 03 to 05.. But civics 06 upwards looks easily as good as Corolla 03 to say 07.This is my opinion.... So don't come for my head o

Yes , the civic is low to ground... one of my drivers that drives it said ..my mechanic reccomends changing all four tires from 14 to 15.. With 15 rims and tires ,it should give it more support at the back .... You mention back shocks and legs.. Now my guess is that you must have bought the civic naija used. My civic that I bought Tokunbo.. I have never changed the shocks or shaft that I can recall ... And mind you I do all my repairs including oil change ..My uber drivers do not pay for repairs at all not a kobo at all ... .. So unfortunately I can't relate to your statement about shocks and shaft etc ... but the carrying people for back on a civic ..That I agree my driver complains about and that is when he suggested we change tires and rims from 14 to 15..... Just like any other naija used cars you buying, it has issues one way or the other... if the cars are si good why are people selling it ? Those naija used cars are either on its last leg or the owners for sees a potential issue down the line..

I may sound As if I'm contradicting myself, but if you wanna buy a car for ehailing as the situation stands now,pls buy a dru23 bullet proof engine for quick ROI,but car is certain to diminish quickly considering the state of the roads and poor pricing by principal companies.
the trick is to drive the car yourself,as giving it out on rentals comes with a lot of sifia pains

Where are the figures to back this up? Last I recall, dru23 can't drive (tongue in cheek) meaning all his dru23 cars are driven by others; yet he's annual report shows profit, except for when he had a bleaching manager.

Lol ....the business is good so far my brother... I will give u example.. One of my civic 04 that I bought tokunbo , I had to spend 120k to buy transmission.. That was few months ago and the honest truth is that have made back the money back ....I think that was the biggest expense I had with the civic...

Ps.. When I bought the civic tokunbo, my mechanic stated that the car will not last due to rust .. That was is assessment, even me too going back now. I should have never bought the car in that condition.. The underneath was rusty, but I was in such a hurry to add more cars to my fleet.. The car dey over heat right from Yankee.... So that is how business is at times, you win some and you loose some..

He's right, most Naija peeps hardly sells car that are still working fine. Just few sell probably because they want to upgrade and the ones that are tired of Uber drivers stories.

The car was bought at an auction and it was rusted....try to take time and read bro.. I should have not bought the car at the auction to begin.. I started that even when the car got to Nigeria my mechanic looked at it and said too much rust... if you know anything about auction cars .. It is basically u taking a 50/50 chance.. Most times I buy from private individuals in the USA ..
That been said the car has doing very ok and the major things I change was transmission and that was about after six months on uber.... The shaft issue you are having I don't have those issues yet .. The civic is very easy to maintain and did I mention that my drivers don't spend a kobo out of their pockets for expenses at all ...so if the car gives them issue they will take it to my mechanic...... Try and learn and understand bro ,it will help you in the long run.... This is why I don't buy naijed used cars .. I would take my chances with a tokunbo anytime and anyday...
