Child adoption in Nigeria is a very long and tedious process with a very poor success rate. Only very few people succeed in adopting at the end of the process. You may wait for as much as 5 to 6years and still get nothing at the end. This is the reason many people patronise baby factories or try some other means of having children such as assisted conception and surrogacy. A single person can adopt, however in some states, the child has to be of the same gender as the adopter.

You start by visiting the ministry of women affairs in your state of residence, they will assign a welfare officer to you with a follow up interview on why you want to adopt.

The welfare officer will be your guide in the whole process. There are preadoption medicals you have to do. If you are successful at the preadoption interview, you will be given a scouting letter which you will use to search for a child of your choice at the orphanages within that state. The ministry can also help with the scouting, but you may have have to wait till eternity. This is the longest stage of the adoption process. That's a lie. Minimum age for adoption is 25 years or one should be about 25 years older than the child. And you don't need a fat account for adoption. You only show proof that you are earning enough to take care of the child and live in a good house that could accommodate the adopted child without much stress. Again, the referees you need are your relatives; father, mother, uncles, or aunts, except these are not available. It's the same relatives that will accompany you to the preadoption interview.
