Niger Republic Bans Export Of Rice To Nigeria by Barbilius: 9:34am On Sep 11, 2019
The Government of Niger Republic has banned the export of rice into Nigeria.

The ban follows President Muhammadu Buhari’s directive for the closure of Nigeria’s border with neighbouring countries to curtail the activities of smugglers.

The directive stated that the ban was to take effect from September 5.

In a circular dated September 5, 2019, Niger’s Director-General of Customs, Oumarou Amadu, ordered all relevant agencies to comply strictly or face severe sanctions.

Since the restriction of access to rice and 40 other commodities came into effect in 2015, Nigeria’s other neighbours, Benin, Cameroon and Togo, have not been so understanding of PMB’s protectionist policy.

Benin is said to have crashed its rice importation tariff to seven per cent, while Cameroon brought its own to zero per cent between 2015 and 2018.

These excise duty reductions, has fuelled smuggling of parboiled rice into Nigeria.

That's an expected handshake.
APC is in charge in Niger as well, that was why about 3 governors attended Gandollars campaign rally.

Meanwhile, every right-thinking person knows that our current output can barely feed Lagos State.

They have been complaining about smuggling, but our rice farmers never reported unsold stocks.

Our interest as a nation should be protected first before thinking of others....

We have enough rice to sustain us as a nation

Most of You quoting me ignorantly kindly go to most of this markets where rice are been sold you will see locally produced rice bagged with foreign rice bags its what I have seen times without numbers in markets.....

Our preference for anything foreign is killing our economy to the extent that some of our goods produced locally had to be identified with foreign stamp by marketers to make it look foreign so Nigerians can patronise it.

I have seen a shoe cobbler make shoe completely from parts from locally made raw materials on getting to his showroom only for me to be seeing Italian Made Shoe grin bro at that junction I gave up even without him explaining anything to me I understand

Rice prices have shut up by a whooping 20%!
If we are not self sufficient in something you just got to import to make up for d shortfall. This is simple sense.
Now there is very limited quantity of rice available for it's large consumer demand.

This is a government sent as a curse for the many sins Nigerians have committed.

Leadership is about making the best decisions for your subjects and still have those subjects you are trying to protect insult you because of immediate pains without considering the future gains. Moses felt it when he tried to lead the Israelite out of the slavery in Egypt. Only a good leader is abe to stand his ground amidst blackmail especially when his conscience is clear.

Rice importation was also banned in Nigeria, that means Niger has been smuggling in rice.
