All these nairaland ladies advising this bro to fashi. When his wife kuku run marriage because of 29k, shey when he posts next say wifey don run i hope you people will also offer to go over and rub his mike. You obviously live in a society where Aso ebi is a social norm. My guy buy the cloth. What's 29k to make the lady happy. Remember where una for start. I bet she worth more than 29k to you. No matter how many times you're taken don't worry. Aso ebi is a legitimate scam, it's like taxes. 5 Likes 1 Share |

That was how one lady in my former hood came to look for me all the way to our new house. She met my mom and told her to give her my number. I got a call in the evening, I just got back from work so stressed and tired. What I heard was “I want you to be in my bridal train”, I went all the way to look for you o, please you will join my train”. I said no wahala, how much for the cloth and sewing all together. She said 13k . I told her flatly I couldn’t!!! I was flat broke, I got a job I need to run with money . I no Dey do eye services for this life I come . Imagine after paying 13k, I will do hair, do makeup, buy bag and shoe to match up with the cloth. Which would run to 30k at the lowest. I told her I could not , she begged and begged and later said I should bring in 10k. But I knew 10k isn’t the problem. Won’t I do hair and other things? Waste of my money at that hard time . My mom said I should just try cos the lady came to look for me. Lol . I tell my mama say chin chin I don’t have to spend . Don’t make promises you can’t keep. She even went to print my name among the bridal girls on the card program. 9 Likes |

She brought them and we gave the clothes to the important people. No Aso-ebi was sold because nobody send me marriage. If its left for my woman, we wouldn't even buy any clothes but she sees it as a waste of money Thank God rain fell that day, made people go home fast 13 Likes 1 Share |

Aso-ebi is what it is. It's an opportunity for the ladies to recuperate what they've spent or intend to spend on the party they're organizing. Some spend close to a million, others more. The food, hall, drinks, gifts and other rentages cost a lot you know. As a form of appreciation, they want you the guest to be blessed too. So, bringing aso-ebi into the fold settles it. You wouldn't expect them to buy such huge yards of clothing with their own money, and still sell it to you at the market base price! They put in efforts into research, transports, and other communication related stuff just to get the best outfit for the event. Those don't come in cheap. Be realistic, women don't do free stuff. Just buy the cloth having it in mind that you're also blessing the organizer with the extra money they put on top of the aso-ebi. Don't be cheap. Buy it and save yourself and family the embarrassment. Enjoy. 1 Like 1 Share |

My comment will deal with the spiritual repercussion regarding extortion. I have noticed this that everyone that ever extorted me came back begging. A friend of mine did his wedding about 4 years ago. The money I paid for asoebi was enough to buy a very quality cloth. But the cloth bought was not worth more than 2k in the market. He didn't not even wear this cloth with us o. I was angry because the cloth made me look like a pauper. My friend was well to do at the time, being the richest among us his friends. Fast forward to last year, he became so poor that he relocated to the village and constantly asked me for money to keep him afloat in the village where food is supposed to be plenty because his people are farmers. I had to ensure he gets another job so that he can stop demanding for money and give me peace of mind. Now he's back in the city. Some people will have to learn the hard way. 3 Likes |

This is one of the reasons why, Nigeria and indeed Nigerians struggle with progress. Aso Ebi aka Uniform was meant to suggest unity and portray solidarity amongst the family and indeed well wishers, howbeit, the symbolic nature of it, is far from the truth. Rather , one of the family members, especially the females go on a spree of extortion. They inflate the price of the miserly material and start a vicious marketing campaign to get all to buy at the overvalued price. Gullible and myopic Nigerians willingly participate believing that "when my time comes, I will do the same". At the end, one experiences a very low in value material, not to talk of the hassle of getting it sowed, the lack of a decent seat at the venue, the hoarding of food and souvenirs, insults and near fisticuffs between your host and her family members etc... The sad thing is a lot of people cannot afford this hiked material but, to show solidarity or as TWO once sang, "Mogbomoya" they purchase in order to take away everything they can both given to them or fapped from unwitting guests. It is a big shame that such aso ebi creates an illusion that all those in the uniform are the same, when the truth be told, a lot of these people go back home more depressed and suicidal. They are the ones who come and pilfer all that they can; fight others shamelessly and at the end of the day, they return to the rat race the event temporarily made them forget. This practice of hiked asoebi pricing is extortion and must be discouraged. It is not dissimilar to what our polithieves do on ascent to power. If Aso ebi is to be done, call the colour theme and let all go get and wear what they have. If the organising family need financial support, let them be open and start a gofundme or a donation envelope to go with the rsvp. If the family or deceased had a decent reputation and earned the goodwill of family, friends and society, contributions should not be that difficult 12 Likes 2 Shares |
