Nicheey:Capture fire. For academic purpose, conducting a large scale amphibious landing to capture Cape Town is out of it, South Africa has a blue water navy, unlike Nigeria that is still nursing a coastal guard(we don't even have Aradu anymore), our vessels will the kissing the bottom of the Pacific faster than pharaoh's chariots. Or is it by air?, You've got to be kidding me What do you want to escort the C-130H(that is coincidentally undergoing maintenance) with?, Alpha jets?, F7s?, or those crop dusters we will receive from the US on the eve of Jesus' second coming?, Apart from the lack of range, those toys would get blown out of the sky and swept into flaming heaps in time for the 9'O clock news. They may even decide to send some birds up north to make some critical oil installations disappear in a puff of black smoke. What about the fallout on the international politics front, right now, only unstable allies like Saudi Arabia, Israel(due to their frigid relations with RSA) and Pakistan would assist us. Even Iran would fully back RSA. The rest of the world(especially the west) would be calling for peace, while simultaneously slamming sanctions. Most of the BRIC nations still see RSA as the face of Africa. The only advantage that the FRN has right now is manpower, which is useless in such a far flung conventional war. 6 Likes 1 Share |

Nicheey:Not that simple bro...RSA once threatened to invade Botswana that was making moves to allow a US AFRICOM permanent military base within it's territory, and they rescinded their intentions immediately. It depends on who they perceive as the bigger and more powerful dog, and in southern Africa, RSA fills that role and fills it quite robustly. I don't see even Zimbabwe or Namibia allowing any of the other African titans set up base in their territory, no matter how bad things get. RSA casts a more vast shadow than anyone else can as far as they are concerned. 1 Like |

Nicheey: Nobody is invading anybody. In a hypothetical scenario Nigeria could and can invade SA. Dunno what u mean by Land Vessels, that's strange to me. Also theirs nothing like "Limited Human and Logistics Transport Planes". The NAF is currently operating at over 80% mission capability rate (MCR) which was non-existent when it fought simultaneous wars in Liberia and Sierra Leone. Same with the NN which enforced a Naval Blockade of the two states in the 90's despite credible external threat in support of rogue national forces and human-heart-eating-drug-fueled rebel armies that together numbered well over 20,000. In Liberia alone well over 1000 Nigerian troops perished over the course of the war which ended on our terms - A clear classroom military victory for the history books. Don't follow the pessimistic crowd. Now, to not be deluded it is not expedient to go to war even if you think you can win cos no one wants to be an occupation army in modern times. It is just not worth it except there's enough rich mineral resources to covet at least for a time while installing a puppet regime. SADC is not as dynamic as ECOWAS. SA is not exactly to SADC what Nigeria is to ECOWAS. Nigeria is a hegemon, SA is not. Those states ritually oppose SA. Just look at Zambia, Madagascar and Tanzania's response to the recent xenophobia. Many SADC states defer to Nigeria. The Namibian president more than once recently described Nigeria as Africa's superpower. They enjoy our extensive support in many fields that SA has no answer for like the Technical Aid Corp of Nigeria. eSwatini's King enjoys our patronage. Malawi depends on the big brother for defence against Tazania for scarce resources. Tanzania covets our investments. Not just SADC, Nigeria sends experts all over Africa. Rwanda enjoys our cover. Most of these states do what they do cos of Nigeria's backing and would do anything to please the big brother knowing we always deliver when the chips are down. In fact sometimes our Generals are Defence Chiefs overseas which is unique to only Nigeria in Africa. That said, SA is a paper tiger whose reach is exaggerated. Yes it is the dominant economy in SADC but it is not the regional military power. Zimbabwe and Namibia are credible military threats to SA and so is Mozambique and Tanzania. In ECOWAS Nigeria has no competitor militarily, economically or socially and Nigeria defines the agenda in West and Central Africa without any challenge. That's the true definition of regional hegemony. Nigeria far outweighs SA in regional influence both economically and militarily. In a trade war Nigeria would win. Nigeria's people are better educated and resourceful and they come in numbers - something reflected in its military - that's first the best weapon of war. We continue to pride ourselves as having the best educated and trained officers in Africa which is acknowledged world wide. For a land invasion, Namibia and Zimbabwe is a probable choice for an armoured brigade and mechanized infantry to roll in but in warfare you look for where your enemy is weakest to punch. Malawi is good for concentration of forces. The sea is an option and the NN is well capable of showing up off Cape Town offshore until sea mines and threats of the probable lone SAN submarine are dealt with. But its doable. And the easiest of them all is getting the troops and equipment down south for which even an Oil-Well dangled in the region will make any of those states grant landing and overflight rights and host bases along with the necessary military infrastructure to shore up the troops before an invasion. The hard part is what comes after Pretoria falls. We don't need SA and its intractable problems. A powerful state is judged by its ability to muster sizable forces, deploy and sustain same in distant lands something Nigeria has proven over and over again. Nigeria's main weakness is bad political leadership for its citizens at home as we see with the current rule of the mob in Abuja led by the APC government of Buhari. 3 Likes 1 Share |

Tinfoil: 1. One major reason is because of the visible criminal activities of a large number of African immigrants, unfortunately, the common grassroot people are the most affected by the vices of drugs and human trafficking perpetuated by a sizable number of immigrants in that country. The number of black foreigners who engage in drugs may be few by percentage (for example, over 800 000 Nigerians reside in RSA, and only a very small fraction can be said to be involved in illegality), however, even that small percentage can be a quite significant number is real terms (for example, even if it is only 1% of Nigerians engaging in drugs and human trafficking in RSA, 1% of 800 000 is still 8000, and that number of criminals is enough to do serious damage to any country, coupled with other indigenous criminal syndicates and security problems). These criminals, due to their brazen impunity and pernicious nature, have sadly become the face of all African immigrants in the country. So even the law abiding and productive majority are lumped together and targeted in an evitable case of class hate. This was seen in Nigeria,in the 70s' and early 80s', when the Shagari government, preying on popular sentiments and in a bid to divert attention from the incompetence and corruption of his government, labelled all Ghanaian immigrants criminals and sent them packing. In truth, there were criminals among the Ghanaian immigrants and many of them were involved in humans trafficking, prostitution, armed robbery and fraudulent activities(419), but you can well imagine that it certainly wasn't all of them or even a majority of them. 2. African immigrants do indeed take up the jobs of indigenous South Africans. Mostly due to the cheap labour they offer, amd sometimes, the skills they bring to the table. It is the same in Nigeria today, when Togolese, Senegalese and Benioese immigrants take up almost all the menial jobs that the locals feel entitled to, this sort of development breeds resentment in any society. So in addition to being tagged criminals, African immigrants in RSA have the dubious honour of being blamed for high unemployment rate in the country. It is classic mob mentality, not just a South African thing, but a common human reaction. 3. On your third point. Well, I do agree with you that perhaps, restrictions on getting South African visa should be reduced in the spirit of inter-continental trade and unity. However, you can imagine the influx of immigrants that would ensue if RSA were to open it's borders to everyone unrestricted. Africa is a festering mass of chronic poverty and inequality, in essence, it is a huge IDP camp sprawling across a continent. Allowing unrestricted entry would further strain RSA as a nation, pile up it's inequality issues and ultimately lead to chaos. As it is now, locals are already complaining and vandalizing properties, imagine what will happen if more African immigrants in a bid to seek greener pastures and escape the crushing poverty in their countries, flock into RSA in droves. It is also to be noted that Nigeria has a very restricted visa acquisition process, getting a Nigerian visa is so hard that even as an American, you have to apply tirelessly and pay several rounds of levies to come here on a three months vacation. It is even harder for Africans who come from non-ECOWAS countries, and I think it is because of the same issues I earlier stated. In conclusion, one thing we have to take note of in all of this is the fact that people are usually emotional about issues, that is why the masses are referred to as the hoi polloi. People most of the time do not know what is best for them, even when they do, they don't know how to get it. That is why a classical democracy is a tyranny of the majority, because the majority is subject to whatever social flux and emotions are prevailing at any given time. That is why politicians take advantage of it and manipulate people, diverting attention from their own failings. Part of this is what we are seeing in South Africa today. 3 Likes |
