@ Respected OGG..i will like to seek your expertise on unclaimed dividends. My friend late father bought several equities for him during the public offers of several quoted companies in late 90s, and early 2000s.Now his father was no more, all the certificates and receipts of purchase could not be retrieved, but my friend name is indicated against the affected companies and registrars on SEC website He is 100% sure that the shares belong to him but he has no share certificate to back up his claims. He is willing to use the information on SEC unclaimed d portal to drive home his point. Please, what can he do to get his accumulated dividends and bonuses? Also, what can he do to list the equities on cscs via a broker despite not having shares certificates? Thanks in anticipation. |

Godlylifeoneart: Yes there are proof of evidence that the claimant/administrator/executor(ur friend in this case) must provide to lay claim to the shares and get it transmitted to them. Basically, the requirements are: 1) A letter of introduction; This is simply a write-up in black and white by the claimant(ur friend) introducing themself as the legal representative of the deceased. In it(the said latter) must include their NAME, ADDRESS, BVN(or a bvn print out from their bank) and authorised SIGNATURE. It's important to note these inputs must all be in consonant with the details of their operational bank A/C. ...they must be the same with those supplied by the claimant while opening a bank A/C in use.(active) For a much easier resolution, the surname and maybe address must have a link to the decease.(the father) 2) A letter of administration; This is basically a legal authority granted by the law court to the claimant/administrator to lay ownership to the property of a deceased person. The latter is then sent to the registrar of the said company shares. ...while the registrars shall in turn send it to the probate registrar for verification and confirmation NO less than 24 hrs after receiving same. 3) A death certificate obtained from the National population commission(NPC) or the certified true copy of identification of the deceased from a notary club or a copy of a newspaper advert of the deceased placed by the court.(preference should be by the same court that granted the latter of administration) This is mainly to help confirm a person's mortality via sighting. 4) Any evidence of prior ownership by the deceased; Since ur friend has lost the shares certificate(which is also a proof of ownership), he can provide either a past dividend warrant(even one would be enough) or a bank A/C statement showing past dividend transaction of the deceased. The bank can help give one an access to a printed past statement of A/C reflecting such payments to the deceased, if they provide them a copy of item 1 and 2 listed above.(once the surnames are the same) With these 4, ur friend can surely lay claim to the late fathers shares. However, where he could not provide all 4, the registrar can still help via a one on one interview with him. Alternatively, he could be asked to provide them(the registrars) with an indemnity or an insurance. A point to note is that ur broker can play an indirect rule in helping to facilitate a speedy transfer of ownership. A few of them are highly experienced in handling or guiding on such matters. I know of stanbic ibtc stockbrokers and meristem. ...they are very competent in this line. I'll advise ur friend opens an A/C with one of them, so they can help in the event of a hurdle.(from the registrar) Again, if they know that they can house the said shares post transfer, they'll be spurred to want to help out. The idea is to help with the speed of execution(fasten the transfer process) Good luck to ur friend !! 1 Like 1 Share |

Godlylifeoneart: The steps itemized by the respected OGG is for claiming the assets of a deceased. The process is different for someone trying to claim an assets that was bought in his name (in this case, ordinary shares of companies). The first step will be a visit to CSCS with a valid government issued ID (Driver license, international passport, PVC, National ID) issued in the name in which the shares were bought. With passport photographs, if I remember correctly. With the payment of a fee, printout of all stocks in your friend's name will be generated for him. He will thereafter need to approach a stock broking firm with the list from CSCS for the process to be completed. I hope this is still the current procedures. 3 Likes |

currentprice: Ur doing quite well, but if I have to explain why it makes sense to align more portfolio weighting to ACCESS than UBA, it will take more than 2 pages. Prior to and as at Q1, u would recall that I chose UBA ahead of ACCESS(we had a healthy debate at the time) ...but things have changed. Make no mistake; Both coys are good(I have both in my inv portfolio), however, there are a few good reasons why one should align more(portfolio weight) with the former than the latter(for now) It's all about growth trajectory, risk weighting and earnings power. ...I hope to make it brief though. Just give me a few hours. Am attending a small function now. 1 Like |

currentprice: That's why u should look to weigh the banks ACCRUALS RATIO.(which adjusted for the risk of a likely manipulation following a possible asset deterioration by diamiod) ...then look in further on the banks ALTMAN Z-SCORE to guage that risk-return(ROI in view) Then benchmark it with that of UBA. When u do that, u'll begin to see the inherent growth trajectory and earnings power(adjusting for risk) of ACCESS compared to UBA. 2 Likes |

Harvestock01: This is true. But I don't think the friend @godlylifeoneart highlighted had the the shares bought in his name. He said it was bought and handled by the dad before his demise. ...in which case, the above guide stands. However, if indeed the dad had bought some of the shares in the friends name, then, yes ur guide comes in handy. @Goldlylifeoneart pls take note of the above contribution from @Harvestock01 Salah |
