Twitter divided as Lupita acts Igbo character in movie adaptation of Chimamanda’s Americanah

Nigerians have taken to Twitter to express their opinion about the decision of American movie Giant, WarnerMedia Entertainment, to have US-based, Oscar-winning Kenyan actress, Lupita Nyong’o, play a Nigerian character in the movie adaptation of Chimamanda Adichie’s novel, Americanah.

Lupita, daughter of a Kenyan politician, was born in Mexico City, where her father was teaching, and was raised in Kenya from the age of one.

WarnerMedia Entertainment had announced on Friday that a quartet of Plan B Entertainment, Eba Productions, Potboiler Television and D2 Productions will produce adaptation of Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s best-selling novel, Americanah.

Americanah is an epic story of a woman born in Nigeria who leaves for America and her extraordinary experiences with love, heartache, adversity and self-discovery.

“The 10-episode limited series will star Academy Award winner Lupita, who had starred in major movies such as 12 Years a Slave and Black Panther.

However, Nigerians have expressed different perspectives about the casting.

Nigerians and entitlement mentality. Always feeling that you owe them explanation for doing what you wanna do with your life.

When Banky W, a Yoruba, played an Igbo role as Dozie Onwuka in the movie "Wedding Party ", how many of them reacted and condemned it?

But because they are jealous of Lupita, they decided to wail unnecessary.

Maybe Eniola Badmus should be picked over Lupita because she's a Nigerian.

RMD is not a 'Yoruba actor'

BTW, if she bought the right to the story, by all means let her do what she seems best with it!

Well wether you like it or not, most of the nollywood trash you people are crazy about in Nigeria simply wouldn't cut it on the global stage.

Elsewhere in the world, acting is about subtlety and nuance, but in nollywood it is a competition on who can shout the loudest and make the most over-exaggerated displays of emotion.

Uzo Aduba is the only American actress of Igbo origin in Hollywood who has a high enough profile to play the character, but she was ruled out because she's involved in some other projects at the moment and she's also a bit older than the character she was meant to play, while Lupita is nearer in age.

One should be Happy that a NON-IGBO has been called upon to act such a notable character...which will further make her appreciate the tenets of the RICH IGBO heritage...
Rather Everything now na FIGHT...
Highly Highly Uncalled For.

Everybody in this country is either ill or mentally imbalance.
Tomorrow they will still be the ones shouting discrimination .
Have watched countless foreign movies where blacks are involve and Nigeria is not out of this.
I have watched one Opera where Ije Kpoms played the role of a Yoruba character and yet she is Igbo .
In Jenifer's Diary Adaku is not Igbo and yet she represent Igbos' and more that I can't recall now.
We are jobless to be frank , just think creating job opportunities will help a lot people are becoming annoying everyday .

Lmao

What where they expecting?

Lupita bought the rights to the novel years ago, Danai Gurira even came to Lagos to research for the series and they will just carry main role and give you people.

The smart ones will be hustling for minor roles, because they will consider Nigerians in Hollywood before Nollywood actors(that's if they do at all)

I am 100% fine with it.

Honestly this is an opportunity to promote and expose igbo people and culture to a wider global audience using a VERY VERY POPULAR and HIGHLY ADMIRED/LOVED african actress.

Why didn't those wailing buy the rights to the story and get their village people to act whatever roles they please!

Nyong'o acquired the rights to the adaptation in 2014, after paying for it some deluded minds feels she is obligated to get a Nigerian into the cast!
