Still wondering what the point of making that book into a movie is. Making money by any means.

Will Smith also played the role of an Igbo doctor in the movie concussion. Could not get the Nigerian accent at all.

Why won’t SA attack us? We can’t tolerate our fellow African to play a role of a Nigerian in a movie. What is the difference between us and them?

Pls! Lupita cannot act Ifem! The picture of Ifemelu I have in my head is no where near her. She's a fantastic actor but, she can't be Ifem. Why not use a Nigerian actress. There are good ones. Is it because they are not "international" ?? Mmmmm It was just like half of a Yellow Sun. Using Thandie Newton as Olanna.. She acted it well but It lacked the Nigerian touch. I couldn't really connect with her and her twin Kainene.

Firstly, Of course Igbos don't look like South Africans, the only Africans that look somewhat like Igbos are other eastern Nigerians.

Secondly, If what you say is true then that is something that South Africans should have taken up with whatever white people produced and directed that movie, because no Nigerian knows nor cares about whatever you are talking about.

Thirdly, why is exactly that a Congolese fellow like yourself continues to roam around a Nigerian board and put your mouth in Nigerian affairs when you could be happily roaming around Congolese discussion forums?
Well, this is internet and I am very happy that it is not a nigerian invention, otherwise guys like you would be banning people from using it.Are youtube,instagram,etc...nigerian inventions? Why are so many nigerians on these platforms?Funny enough, south africans are asking nigerians what are they doing on south african soil, considering they aint south africans.

Nigerians and entitlement mentality. Always feeling that you owe them explanation for doing what you wanna do with your life.

When Banky W, a Yoruba, played an Igbo role as Dozie Onwuka in the movie "Wedding Party ", how many of them reacted and condemned it?

But because they are jealous of Lupita, they decided to wail unnecessary.

Maybe Eniola Badmus should be picked over Lupita because she's a Nigerian.

abi na anyone can act a role so long u can learn it... film about Mandela were not acted by South Africans...and it made sense long walk to freedom was acted by one dude like that and he practiced all Mandela way of speaking and did well... Winnie Mandela film was acted by this American singer and she did well plus Mandela role was played by an American actor... we have plenty stories that Nigeria movie makers can pick and make film on.... there is joy of motherhood... act how Nigeria won Atlanta gold 96.. act about kanu and his heart travails and how he overcame it to still do well at arsenal... Pete edochie is not Hausa but played a key role as emir in Amina a good film then...what are saying...

Things have to be looked at objectively and not subjectively.
There's a world of difference between Banky playing the role of Dozie. It's hard to know the tribe of many of these butter children as all.speak English fluently without their native accents in the background. Fraholy speaking, they are a tribe on their own. To the average Nigerians, these children don lost.

Also, Banky grew up here. He is Nigerian.

Ngungi is not Nigerian. Can she pull off a convincing performance to the average Nigerian or Igbo that she's truly Igbo? Many Britons for instance know when a Non Briton is playing the role of a Briton from the accent. It isn't 100% spot on. I wouldn't discern. It ruins the viewing experience for many and that may.be the worry of many Nigerians. It is an actors job to convince the viewers that he is that character. An.over convincing characterisation is what wins Oscar's. You just have to love Daniel Day Lewis. His role as the butcher in Gangs of New York still gives me pimples.

And then comes the second part. The film was made to appeal to a global audience or a specific audience- the audience that will bring in most of the revenues. Nigeria makes up a very tiny fraction of the market. If that audience is okay with Ngungi, so be it. She has star power and will draw in audiences 5hey seek and the mouth watering revenues that comes with it.

If Nigeria accounted for 20% of that market, trust me- they would have used a Nigerian. It's nothing personal. Strictly business

Igbos are generally not as dark as Lupita which will make the entire thing look fake. She will be best fit for role as Edo, Bayelsa or Yoruba where a greater percentage are that dark.

Well there's Genevieve and Stephanie Okereke. They're two world class actresses who've starred in movies at that level and I believe could have done justice to the movie, being Ibo. But then, lupita BOUGHT the rights. You can't tell her what to do with her money.
why didn't Genevieve or Steph adopt the book get the rights and do a movie on it... we allow outsiders pick our stories and wail on how they should tell it...

Well wether you like it or not, most of the nollywood trash you people are crazy about in Nigeria simply wouldn't cut it on the global stage.

Elsewhere in the world, acting is about subtlety and nuance, but in nollywood it is a competition on who can shout the loudest and make the most over-exaggerated displays of emotion.

Uzo Aduba is the only American actress of Igbo origin in Hollywood who has a high enough profile to play the character, but she was ruled out because she's involved in some other projects at the moment and she's also a bit older than the character she was meant to play, while Lupita is nearer in age.
there's Yvonne Orji too, you know?

You can't play a Brit or American in a Hollywood movie if you don't possess the accent.

Go figure.

Nigerian actors and actresses are quite talented. sad Any good director worth his salt, should be able to extract the degree of 'subtlety' he desires, from his cast. It is not rocket science....

I don’t care who the actress is.. but the fact that they will turn our Igbo accent to South African / Rwanda Accent is the annoying part.

Will Smith destroyed “concussion” with that rubbish.
Ah....so you sef don see am? cheesy Each time these foreign actors or actresses try to portray a Nigerian character, they get it wrong....from the accent, to the mannerisms, and even the body language. Lupita is not a fantastic actress....she is just okay, in my opinion. Others may feel differently, though.

And you think those lousy and pedestrian plot devices and those stale overused storylines that regularly insult our collective intelligence, is evidence that we have good directors in nollywood? Nollywood is low grade from top to bottom.

That those actors and actresses even make the characters believable, despite your so-called 'stale overused storylines', shows they are doing a good job. undecided

Why doesn't this comment surprise me? Maybe it's because I've grown accustomed to expecting random stupidity from Nigerians.
In better run entertainment industries, movie critics and audience reactions during test screenings can make or destroy a movie on the strength of positive or negative reviews.
Here any piece of crap produced is swallowed by a gullible, impressionable, audience with the collective IQ of a turd.
