Godspower35: Correction, please: the transmission fluid does not just "keep the transmission lubricated". The fluid itself is part of the working mechanism of the transmission function. So, it's purpose goes well beyond lubrication (and cooling) of moving parts, which, to me, is even a secondary function. The process of changing gears requires the buildup of fluid pressures to operate the necessary actuators. (There are figures to those pressures and they factor into the benchmark specs that go into diagnosing the health of a tranny etc.) In comparison, engine oil plays little to no role in the core function of your engine (combustion into rotary motion). However, when so equipped, some engines use oil pressures to activate/engage certain mechanisms such as valve timing & lift (VVTL) to change the cam profile (e.g. from high performance to lower performance profiles). This "functional" role of the engine oil is somewhat similar to, but much less significant, to the role the transmission fluid plays in the tranny. In the tranny, the fluid is not just a lubricant, it is mission critical! Bottomline: you could fool around with engine oil type (synthetic or mineral), weight (20W-50 or 5W-20), quality, and dipstick levels and PROBABLY get away with it. The tranny is much less tolerant of fluid abuse of any form. Never joke with your tranny fluid, because it is actually part of the transmission itself! |

shaggy007: Two issues here: 1 - Most manufacturers have their own methods for checking their transmission fluids. Some say: Bring the vehicle up to operating temperature. Stop the car (on level ground, of course). Cycle through all the gears. Put it in P. Then check dipstick. Instructions vary. Always follow what your manual says. 2 - I seriously dispute the idea that you could damage your transmission, if you pull the dipstick when the engine is OFF. The only real threat I see there is the potential to misread the fluid level (which will always be wrong in this case), and fail to properly gauge the oil level, either thru overfilling or underfilling, leading eventually to a breakdown. |

shaggy007: True. I hear this is the best way to guage the transmission oil.. |

Mryacks: False. Best way is to follow manufacturer's instruction. Fluid check procedures may vary slightly from model to model, year to year, and brand to brand. Always check what the manual says for your own vehicle. I can't scream this loud enough. |

shaggy007: Your submission implied a direct and immediate threat to the tranny if dipstick is pulled while engine is off. You didn't clarify how the threat manifests. Some readers might have been confused. Cheers. |
