Honestly, I run a startup and if I could go back in time again I would never do it. People glorify entrepreneurship but it's very difficult. I have headaches and palcipations at months end when the bills start setting in. The environment in Nigeria is also tough with everyone trying to take from you without adding value in anyway. I rather have a well paid job with a nice salary where I just do what I am told and get paid at the end of the month.

Did you go into entrepreneurship due to passion or you went into it because you have no choice? There is a difference... No b by force.

If you don't love challenges, you don't get high to seemingly adrenaline excitement for conquering obstacles after obstacles, take up a job.

If don't like the idea of solving unattended problems of the society, take a job.

No b by force.

But an entrepreneur created the 9-5 job you are doing. You also owe it to the generation coming to create their 9-5 jobs.

This is so true. There is a time work, and there is a time to create work for others.

Why can't I get comfortable in my job? Is it your comfortable? grin Why should a problem lie there?

The Western countries Nigerians are running in mass to; majority don't go there with the hope of trading (this is the definition of entrepreneurship in Nigeria). They go there to do same 9-5, sometimes a less professional one, all to survive.

This means the problem was never the 9-5, but the system, system being the country.

If you can be comfortable with your business despite growing competition and difficulty in doing business which has led to the death of so many businesses in Nigeria. Why should I not be comfortable in my job.

When your business has issues, you blame the government for making it hard for you (and expect me to sympathise with you), BUT when I lose my job- you blame me for being a comfortable salary earner.

Forgetting it is the same system fcking us all, just different styles and orifices.

I am sure there are many 9-5 that your entrepreneurship would never be IMPORTANTER than and vice versa.

Different strokes...
The simple truth is ...9 to 5 id safer but has it limits ur growth depends on the company u work for

Entrepreneurship is risky but has no limit ...it can fail ..like it dose mist times ...but a day can give u someones 50 years salary

If u are okay with middle class 9-5 is okay ...if u want to live a luxury life ,not worrying about how to feed n live for 10 years entrepreneurship is the key

because the richest people are not working for anyone

Who told you so? Tim Cook gets remunerations of over 80-100 million dollars as apple CEO.

A mid level management staff at ExxonMobil can see up to 36 million naira a year. So what's your point?

You don't need to talk down on one doing 9 to 5.

Every one has his/her area.

Thing is the issue of responsibility and maturity in taking risks.

The "security" of working in an establishment usually creates room for people to manifest irresponsibility. You are not the owner of the organization. Someone else does and he owes you your paycheck every agreed time.

And unlike very few cases of individuals that do excellently in 9 to 5 jobs, taking responsibility and ensuring that the organization is successful (like its their own), majority are more comfortable with earning salaries with their stated responsibilities. They will NEVER give an extra push (dem no pay me for that one. No be my papa work) for the success of their given organizations.

As an employer of labor, interestingly, many prospective employees will say the "we are people that love to push our limits and ensure the best for the company" when interviewed. All na for ensuring their paycheck. Lol.

Well from my own point of view, what works for Mr A
Might not work for Mr B,it's better for us to understand our strength, the reason why most businesses fail is because some people don't have the skills of running a business.Just understand your self

If you are a salary earner, you must be used to hearing these statements from people who are self-employed.

“Immediately after graduation, I vowed never to work for anyone”

“Salary is the token you are paid to forget your dreams”

“Ever since I made up my mind to start my own business, I have realized corporate work is just modern slavery”

“I am my own boss, I control my time”

“You can never get rich working for someone else”... etc

Business people won't allow someone rest. Are we in a competition? The goal is for everyone to earn a living. Why do some of them constantly try to remind us they are living the best life.

These same people have workers o. If we all become business owners, who will patronise the other and who will handle other sectors?

This one is so real. Plus having people saying "yes sir, yes ma". It's good be your own boss, it rocks.

most nigerians just throw the entrepreneur term around.
all they are doing is trading
the same hustling that is flooding this country with fake and substandard goods.
not actually creating a product or service or value

How many salary earners have that kind of opportunity? One day, he will still quit that job to become an entrepreneur, that's for sure.

I honestly get the argument perhaps I hadn't met one of the arrogant pricks you mention.

I MYSELF INTEND TO BE A FULL TIME SELF EMPLOYED GRAD STUDENT AS SOON AS I AM OUT THERE BUT I ALSO UNDERSTAND THAT I NEED THE 9-5 IF I AM TO BEGIN WITH FOR STABILITY.

THE REAL IDEA IS TO NOT ONLY BE STABLE BUT CREATE AN AVENUE TO BE WEALTHY AT BEST DOING WHAT YOU ARE CAPABLE OF DOING.

Perhaps it is because folks in employment are usually the ones with so much time on their hands they bother the rest of society with unrealistic, 'out of touch with reality' nuances.

Take for instance the minimum wage issue. Despite consuming far more resources than its productivity, despite contributing in no small way to the destruction of the economy, civil servants xontinue to trouble the reat of

That is the problem of the system. I have never liked the way civil servants work, I think they need to earn their pay, but then- their lackadaisical attitude to work takes nothing away from minimum wage.

Yeah, it can be. It may even crash if care is not taken. The only positive side is that if it succeeds, you won't have to worry about money again

Cuz Masters have no regards to slaves

And please there's nothing like 9-5 in Nigeria.

Lagosians 4am-9pm
other state 7:30 - 5pm...
One-man-business: 7am.. They decide when you close.

Try get to your office by 9 and see

9-5 is a fixed term for corporate job. Doesn't mean some people dont do 7am to 5pm in other countries too.

I dont think the 9-5 are being talked down on. not in all cases at least. Except a person chooses to view it that way. it's more of a wake up call.
If you go from having no time for yourself and no control over your income regardless of the amount of effort you put in; to the exact opposite, when you see others, it's like watching ppl walk into walls blindfolded.

So you tell them to remove the cloth from their eye. Some ppl take it as insult. Some just enjoy the darkness. To each his own. The eye opening however, is never easy.
