MackyNaija:

My school cost about $25k per annum according to the i20.

But one can do...
Fees $7500 (fixed)
Living cost in a shared apartment (variable) ~$350 monthly, $4500 a year
Feeding $2000 a year (variable)
Misc $2000 a year (variable)

Total is about $16k, if it exceeds that amount it wouldn't go beyond $20k but the i20 says $25k.

Not having this knowledge is why people delay starting the program sooner. Some people spend less - the school fee is the only fixed cost and the rest depends on the individual.
Thanks for this and your educative thread

I just open this thread this morning and read everything from page1 to 53.... Very Interesting and educating...

Oga MACKAY...you are indeed a child of blessings...
You opened this thread years back only as just a student going to US to study but today you are permanent resident in US..
Just continue doing the right thing and never join the stupid ones over there to tarnish the little image we still have there...
The lord is your strength...

Don't worry asking about Naija...we are still ENJOYING BUHARI ECONOMY...

By the special grace of God, Am definitely coming over there soon.

Remain Blessed.

On Internship and Job Search

Remember getting a position is a journey and not a Sprint...
A senior colleague in school calls it a game of numbers.

You can never tell which job will give you an offer but with the right skills properly written in the right resume, the right pitch, and applying to jobs in 100's, 1 should come through.

From my experience as a Fall student, the first search opportunity is online, next is at your school's career fair, then SWE conference, then back online, then to the NSBE conference and back online.

Job searching should start one month after you land in the country and have settled in to an extent.

1. You can apply online and get one.

2. Your professor at school can hook you up with positions.

3. You can be reached out to on LinkedIn or handshake (as in the case of my school)

4. If an alumni from your school has performed well at a company, the recruiters there will like more people from same department.

5. You can get a short skills based pitch and direct Message recruiters on LinkedIn. Premium account works well here.

6. For full-time roles, You can talk to recruiting agencies - they are very efficient at finding people jobs.
Are0tek, rand5Tad, k3llyservic3s etc etc.

7. Internal referals by people recommending you for jobs where they work.

8. You can aplly to a rotation program that an alumni interviews for but didn't get in.
Or a position that someone else was hired for.

There are numerous ways to get a job, do not despise 'small' companies - they might be the ones holding the keys to you breaking into your desired industry.

9. After graduating, I applied for and got 3 jobs as a Process Engineering technician using just my high school degree in a watered down resume in order to gain relevant work experience as I didn't do internships or have relevant experience in that field.

Employers at subsequent interviews took me serious since they new I already had a job in process engineering and it was a matter of time before I got a role as an engineer.

The first interview in a Power sector company sent an offer after 48 hours.

My current office sent an offer in less than 24 hours.

Do not despise 'remote locations', get in and get the required experience to make the move to your desired company or location. wink

Make I begin prepare for work. The traffic here be like Lagos own.

I just deh wonder...

I read a comment on a thread from the front page - "...where there is work, no salary. Where they pay salary, there are no jobs".

I am yet to hear of any company here that owes salaries. If you know of any, inform us.

My Nigerian company was one of the best you could find locally. Salaries paid on time, health, security, transport allowances even follow for the salary. cheesy

We were paid housing allowances, 13th month even follow. Kai! I realize everyday the extent to which I had it good.
I no too suffer for that country. grin

Overall, I prefer it here, no manager go threaten you, HR no deh side with management and you can legit claim time off and it's paid.
Meal room deh here, sick bay, several fun activities - my company before this one get table tennis room.. Infact ALL the companies for Yankee na 'naija multinational standard'. grin grin grin

My friend that works for Halll1burt0n here says he has met several people that think Sh3ll and Exx0n are just names of gas stations! cry cry cry
Who send you if you deh work for 'petrol station', sorry, I mean oil and gas company. If you say you work with Sh3ll, people go deh look you like say you be small rat. cheesy grin

If you are still second guessing... To leave or not to leave, stay back! angry
People that are serious don't think twice about it. For this country, your hustle must pay!

Chop Life Series
In the local sense, to ChopLife means to mix jollof + fried plantain + fried goat meat + big p3psi orobo while the a/c is on as you r watching a very good movie! cheesy

For Yankee, ChopLife will be to find very nice places to visit... Forgetting about work, all cares and worries of life while experiencing new things.

I have visited and will be visiting several places in northern California I found via a g0ogle search.

I was considering Waze for morning carpooling last night...

It will make it possible for me to use the HOV lane if I can get an extra person to join me to work.

Problem is my departure time varies between 6.15am to 6.35am... Anytime I ready finish, I carry my lunch box and water bottle run like rabbit go enter my motor. cheesy

How will someone I am picking up handle this variability?
