A recent Scientific publication from my lab Research work: Due to increasing water pollution attributed to anthropogenic and biotic activities, there is an increasing need to treat wastewater from industries before discharging into water bodies. Here, we designed a small scale system using waste banana peels to treat industrial water containing toxic metal ions. The system is suitable to treat 100 L of metal ion polluted water within 90 mins and the cost of the adsorbent is 9.5usd/kg. Researcher: This work was designed in my lab and carried out by my PhD student. Funding: The incentive for the published work is around 600k (naira). Lab: This work is carried out at the Eastern Mediterranean University. 3 Likes 2 Shares

mustyy: That’s fantastic. I have worked on many agro wastes and I have enhanced their adsorptive capacity for various pollutants. You can let me know which you are interested, which adsorption system (batch or column) you want to use, which pollutant you are considering, single or multiple pollutants, laboratory/simulated or real wastewater, how you intend to carry out the regeneration and reuse of the adsorbent, which kinetics, isotherm and thermo studies you are considering, will you be doing data optimization to enhance the parameters for industrial use? You are aware the adsorption is not a destructive tech so what happens to the spent adsorbents ? You can reply here let people gain as well.. 5 Likes 2 Shares |

oluwatomiwa:haha 70% is distinction. Are you saying only distinction can do PhD? No, it is between 60% for average scale or 3.5 on scale of 5.0. In this case, 59.3 is awarded masters degree, not master with merit. So, it takes favour for such to get enrolled. |

Re: Thread For PHD Students by youthofnaija: 8:40pm On Sep 21, 2019 |
oluwatomiwa: Let us get this right. You cannot convert M. Sc percentage (weighted average) score to cgpa by simple mathematical extrapolation. To calculate the percentage, sum the scores of all the subjects taken and divide by the total number of courses. The cgpa is calculated same way as the undergraduate cgpa. Note: you can make a cgpa of 3.5 and still score less than 60% and vice versa 2 Likes |

Good day Prof Sir, I must commend the good work you have been doing on this thread. In particular, I am intrigued by your knowledge of research methodology and scientific publishing. I am thinking of starting a PhD program next year in either UNILAG, UI or UNIABUJA. My qualifications are as follows: BSc. Pharmacology (UNILAG) MSc. Pharmacology (UNILAG) My Research interests include the investigation of potential bio-active plant extracts as potential treatments for inflammation and cancer (using animal models as study subjects), particularly those types of cancers that result from inflammation. E.g. Colorectal Cancer, Liver Cancer and Pancreatic Cancer. I would love to perform genetic and epigenetic analysis of human tumor samples derived from patients in the hospitals to delineate specific mutant drivers of tumor aggressiveness that may be common among Nigerians. However, I fear that my knowledge of research methodology, proper conduct of scientific research, data analysis as well as publication of results in reputable journals is limited. Please, could you recommend a book or two for reading or even an online course (if possible)? Thanks in anticipation. |

darkelf: It’s very nice to see you are starting your research and the research areas you have chosen are interesting. To learn how to comduct research, design research methodology, results analysis and discussions, and scientific publications.......you will need to spend time on research articles. You must be able to access scientific contents online 1. Visit the following websites: science direct, natures research, springer journal, Taylor & Francis journals, Wiley journals etc In these sites: type keywords related to the research you want to conduct. When related research articles pop up, download at least 5-10 if possible in each site. What will you do with these downloaded research articles? 1. Study how the articles are structured 2. Focus first on the research methods described and see how the research were carried out 3. Note specific reactions/methods names (learn more on it), try to understand what is happening in each stage 4. Visit the instrumental/characterization section: note each instrument used and why. 5. Then visit the results and discussion sections, see how the obtained results and observed trends are discussed. 6. Then see through the introduction, how the literature or earlier published works have been linked to the research problem, the drawbacks, significance/innovation and approach you intend to take so as to curtail earlier drawbacks or improve existing methods. Then check how conclusions/summaries are usually written. By the time you follow like 20 related articles, and some or all of the steps above you will get used to how research is to be conducted and methods related to your research. Lastly to publish your work; you can follow same procedure and structure your work and you can also read this link, comment and see the reference books/articles to aid you: 2. https://www.elsevier.com/connect/7-steps-to-publishing-in-a-scientific-journal Best wishes 12 Likes 5 Shares |

Good morning dear Prof @wip. I am an academic in one of the Nigerian universities. A rule has been made that all our publications must be made in journals that are indexed in Thomson Reuters. I have also been made to understand that journals in Thomson Reuters charge very high to publish in them. Could you please suggest reputable journals indexed in Thomson Reuters that are free to publish in areas of electronics, telecommunications and computers? God bless you really good, Prof. 2 Likes 1 Share |
Re: Thread For PHD Students by wip7: 8:55am On Sep 22, 2019 |
Goodlucknigeria: This is really great to hear Nigerian universities are now adopting SCI-based reputable journals. This will drastically improve their international reputations and ranking globally. Please take note; 98% of subscription-based journals (meaning not open access) is free to publish. I have published over 60 SCI-based journals and never pay for publication in my life. Please visit Elsevier Journals type likely research title, related journals will pop out. Select the ones that match your field and check under authors guide, you will see the ones that are subscriptions based then you can publish there because they are free. For instance below journals are free, you can search more by following the link here: https://journalfinder.elsevier.com Best wishes! 5 Likes 2 Shares

wip7: Thank you so much, Prof. But I was told that it takes journals under Elsevier like 6 months to review your manuscript before getting back to you. Is this true? 3 Likes 2 Shares |
Re: Thread For PHD Students by wip7: 1:59pm On Sep 22, 2019 |
Goodlucknigeria: First, article publication in reputable journals goes through several stages which is beyond the power of the author and in most cases the editor. The longest stage is the peer reviewing stage which varies between 15 days to 5 months, revision stage, acceptance stage, proofing and production stage, online article publication stage. All reputable journals pass through these stages irrespective of the publishing house (Elsevier or springer or Taylor’s or Willey). No fixed time or days and it is Daylight lie that it takes 6 months for Elsevier to get back to you. It maybe as short as 1 month or even longer than 10 months....no fixed days ....That’s how publication in reputable journals goes. 80% if my papers come from Elsevier, 15% from Springer and 5% from Taylor’s & Francis. From my experience I publish 1-4 months and in 2018 I published 12 papers, 2019 Target is 20 papers 65% reached while others under review. I think your focus should be on the quality, significance, innovation and industrial applications of your publication. Only fake Indian journals and the likes publish in 10 days and such articles published in predatory and fake journals are strongly frowned upon and lowers the reputation of the authors/academic involve. All well ranked universities focus more in reputable and quality research output in well recognized journals irrespective of publication time. Please don’t listen to excuses from failures ... such always give negative energy to everything they could not achieve ... Best wishes 7 Likes 3 Shares |

ejibaba: Congrats for your recently accepted work, keep going upward! Yearly, I usually have a target which I strictly follow. I ensure that when am working on a project or a particular research study, am able to collect data that will enable atleast 2-3 publication of research articles per project/study. Averagely, I submit 2-3 manuscripts per month, some get accepted, while some get rejected then I check whatever the reviewers suggest and resubmit. For my end; we are paid 1500-2500$ per paper published in Q1/SCI-based journals as a token of reward... 3 Likes 2 Shares |
