Blaming doctors for death in hospitals is not fair. Most people blaming doctors have poor attitude to work and relate poorly with clients in their respective offices especially those working in public institutions.
People are expecting doctors to be saints in corrupt society that value no human lives. Doctors are products of society. If society is bad,professionals who are products of the same society will also be bad.
Before you blame any doctor,ask yourself 'am I dedicated to my duty?

No....I could probably write an essay on how Nigerian hospitals suffer due to unpaid bills....even by patients who can afford the bills self.

Just posted that as a remider. Sadly we won't get to hear from the doctors...as medical records are private things legally...unless a judge orders the release.

That's how they behave in most of the government hospitals. Sometimes ago, my mum was admitted at the federal medical centre Ido Ekiti and I rushed to call the nurses on duty when my mum's condition got worsen but to my greatest surprise, they never responded until I went for the third time and one of them ended up shouting at me that am i the only one with patient there, May God help us in this country. One fateful morning In June this year in Ogun state, I woke up with aches all over me, I was enduring it until it became unbearable, I was later rushed to the State's hospital Abeokuta before 11am, I was so much in pain that I was praying for death, i begged everyone around me to help with poison when I could no longer bear the pain, my family and friends said i was rolling on the hospital floor and removed every clothes on me due to the severe pain but could you believe that with all i went through, no doctor showed up until past six in the evening? That very day, my life was hellish but I thank the almighty God that he himself spared my life. � �

All you said is true...

But here in Nigeria...and I say this as someone who is actually working in the health sector....many Nigerians don't pay outstanding hospital bills.

This makes it diffiuclt for hosptials to spend money buying things like consumables, equipment, etc...which could be used to save other crtical patients.

In other words...debts owed by patients makes care delivery more difficult.

Using a case from a hospital where I worked.....I was once working in the emergency peadatric unit of a hospital. Payment polices were strict. Because over the years many patients had absconded without paying. THis left the hospital in financial trobules.

I guess we could argue that Government could make health care free. But our health budget is less than $3billion for a population of 200million (Spain spends about 100billion for a population of 40million). Maybe we should increase taxes. Maybe we should spend all the money we reconvered ..and forget about needs in educaiton, transport, etc...and so on.

And the same issue happens in developed countries. Once saw a report about a poor man in the US who had been stopped from recieving free care in the emergency unit of a US hospital. The hospital's response....we have adebt of $200million from treating patients for free like that poor man. At some time we have to say...no more.

I saw what you wrote about what happened to your friend. It's sad...and yes, it was wrong. But...isn't it wrong when patient dies...because hospital could not get crtical material due to too many patients defaulting on their bills?

This is so sad, lack of accountability is one of the issues in the medical practice. Reading the report from the husband shows high negligence and lack of empathy from the medics in the hospital. The nurses can be worse, just wished they were also dealt with. I can't imagine what the family is going thru now, especially those little angels. May God give them fortitude to bear the pains.

I reside in the same town and I can picture everything the husband said because I use the same medical facility.
The nurses and admin staff needs beating sometimes. Not all though, but most needs shouting at and threats before they take you serious. I have shouted and blazed my anger on them a couple of times and I know I'll do it again if the need arises. They are professional in their unruly and lackadaisical attitude. I only wish most nurses are men. You would think female nurses would have empathy but that's only in the imagination.

They have been ridiculed for owing doctors salaries to the extent House officers leave/complete traiming without pay. How will you expect the same hospital to have ready available plasma expanders, a blood bank, an ivu or Hdu unit or even light lol.

If that doctor is not the owner of the hospital, there's little he can do if the policy states that the patient should not be attended to without payments.
I have had an emergency before and already wore my gloves to commence work on the patient before I was told that they had to open a case note and pay some bills before I could start. The only thing I could do was hurry them up. This happened in a private hospital where all the materials I needed were in custody of others and they needed to be paid for first.
The man that was shouting for them to put up blood probably didn't know that the blood had to be released from the blood bank first.
Most hospitals are like that and the doctor's hands are tied especially if he is not the owner. Even when he is the owner, there's a limit.
During service, I worked in a private hospital where patients were attended to before any payment but most of the patients and relatives only gave us insults and ungratefulness in return or even took the money away. Despite that, the MD didn't stop doing the good deed. Presently, the hospital is struggling to breathe.
I don't blame hospitals that are like that. Might be from experience.

Are you justifying their negligence, on account of the Harsh condition. It shouldn't be.

Harsh condition is not peculiar to doctors alone.
We should always do our best in any vocation we've chosen for ourselves.
