Congrats for your recently accepted work, keep going upward!

Yearly, I usually have a target which I strictly follow. I ensure that when am working on a project or a particular research study, am able to collect data that will enable atleast 2-3 publication of research articles per project/study. Averagely, I submit 2-3 manuscripts per month, some get accepted, while some get rejected then I check whatever the reviewers suggest and resubmit.

For my end; we are paid 1500-2500$ per paper published in Q1/SCI-based journals as a token of reward...
Thank you, though my 2nd Sci-journal for the year. No reward in our case, no support whatsoever. I wonder how they expect one to use their salary to fund research that is of high quality. I couldn't attend BAM conference in Aston University UK due to funds despite having my paper accepted for presentation. We copy things in this country and copy halfway. Keep the good work and thanks for giving me another challenge.

If you are looking for PhD scholarship, most start with 70℅ and above
you can as well get with less 70% with 2.1 or first class.

A quality journal has a peer review system. Indexed under SCI, SCI-expanded, or SSCI. Can be found in Web of Science/Thomson Reuters database. Also, has verifiable metrics such as impact factor, Citescore.

The journal you mentioned above don’t have those listed characters.....so

Please always consider publishing in journals from Elsevier, Springer, Wiley, Taylor, Nature, Emrald, Sage etc ....

But I saw on their website Google based Impact Factor IF: 1.14, is it the real impact factor sir, see it below

Good day,

Very nice academic journey you have. To be able to suggest topics for you, I like to know the title of research you worked on during your MSc. Also, you said you have broad research interests, can you list 3-5 of this so as to have a clear and concise picture of your research areas.
Thank you Prof.

I would say my research interests are encapsulated in these five related thematic areas:

1. Mental health: Adolescent mental health, Substance use/drug abuse, mental health stigma and discrimination.

2. Reproductive health: Especially maternal and child health. Family planning, contraceptive use and barriers to use, exclusive breasting feeding, adolescents' risky sexual behaviour, effects of comprehensive sexuality education.

3. Communicable diseases: HIV/AIDS- barriers to voluntary testing, HIV/AIDS stigmatization; Lassa Fever, Ebola, e.t.c

4. Gender studies: domestic violence, Rape, child sexual abuse, Female Genital Mutilation

5. Health care system: Access to health care, Healthcare Associated Infection (HCAI), health seeking behaviour, TBAs, non-orthodox medicine

My M.Sc. thesis was on the "benefits/barriers to antenatal exercise for women".

Nope is not real impact factor....

The real impact factor is computed when the journal is indexed in the aforementioned databases and in most cases it takes 3-4 years for any new journal to be issued impact factor if belongs to reputable publisher.

Take note: impact factor is not just the only metric to qualify a journal ...

When you want to publish always visit clarivate website to see if the journal exist there and then you can see the genuine indexes/coverage of the journal.

Personally I think 2 and 3 are very good for Africa and the majority of the developing countries. You may focus on any of these. Meanwhile, to fine-tune your proposal, check science direct for each topic see the one that has more or fewer resources, check the reports to see the areas that are frequently researched and the part missing. Focus on the missing links.

Best wishes!

If you have opportunities to be admitted into a well-facilitated university, I will recommend a PhD in Material Science if it will suit your future goals. These days, society is moving towards solving a multitude of problems due to a rapidly growing and ageing population, there is greater demand for more effective, environmental-friendly and cost-effective materials for:

1. Solving the environment and climate change
2. Harvesting renewable and sustainable energy
3. For advanced materials for healthcare use
4. Biotechnology, aerospace and transport system
5. Devices for communications and information technology

With your MSc., don't you think you should look at Medicinal Chemistry? If you are looking for PhD funded program , Environmental Chemistry funding could be difficult to get.

You need to understand the fact that your M.Sc. doesn't relate with Environmental Chemistry. And most funding bodies would need to check for the relationship between your MSC and your proposed PhD area.

What if his proposed Phd is environmental toxicology?

Anyway, I understand the angle you are coming from but I must say that is not universally true.
I have been both internal and external jury member selected to review applicants for PhD funding, specifically I have reviewed funding application for EU MSCA.

There are set of criteria attached to each funding, applicants will be evaluated against each of the criteria. Each funding body will have its own criteria for eligibility. At PhD level, full funding will tend to be awarded on academic merit, independent research output (publications in reputable journals and results communication), background skills (which you mentioned), laboratory and field skills demonstrated by the applicants, relevancy of the applicant proposal to the supervsor funding research area, there are also some that take into account financial background and other criteria such as gender.

So all above goes into consideration while evaluating the applicants for funding.

In February 2018, I was contacted to serve as external reviewer for applicant from Ethiopia who applied for a PhD Funding in Germany. Her undergraduate is mathematics, her master is health care management and she applied for Phd funding in Computational biology......after considering all the laid criteria for the funding and my personal experience... I voted and wrote positive note regarding her application which I believed the other reviewers did the same and she was awarded the funding.

You are correct. However, he needs to be very careful. If more people with background in Environmental Chemistry applied for PhD in Environmental Chemistry and they have strong academic background comparable to his, he might not be lucky. Besides, many scholarship bodies would want someone with M.Sc Environmental Chemistry/Toxicology/Science to be considered for a PhD research in Environmental Chemistry and not someone with M.Sc. in Pharmaceutical Chemistry. He needs to be extraordinary to be selected. And his chances are somehow slim.

I think I said it will be difficult, and not that it is not possible for him to be funded for Environmental Chemistry. He can shoot his bullets.

@Prof., thanks for your meaningful and positive contributions on this platform...However, I have a question to ask you please on my recent research proposal I submitted to my Professor...Have submitted up to three Proposals to him based on his research areas but his response has been so low about it because he wanted me to work related to microfluidic and I have no sound knowledge about the fabrication aspect. I only submitted a proposal as related to polymer nanocomposite, which is also his research area aswell...Kindly advice please..Thanks.

Good evening everyone,
I am so pleased to have found this thread. I am contemplating going for my PhD programme but what I am seeing here is really making me scared, as if it will be a very challenging task and if I will be up to it. However, from observation, the thread consist of more science scholars, I may be wrong as I have not gone through the entire pages.

I am an intending PhD student, with
B.Sc Political Science(UNN)
M.Sc Public Administration (NOUN)

I am considering Public Sector Management or Human Resource Management for PhD but in Imo State University(IMSU)

Areas I need clarification are:
1. Are there possibilities to get funding for Social Sciences courses and for Nigerian Universities?

2. What are the procedures for PhD? Must I first get a supervisor, get research topics and have published works before I can apply?

3. For my chosen areas for PhD, following the trend, which area is more promising to venture into.

4. Can I be working and running a PhD programme?

Thanks everyone. God bless us...

I want to say a hearty thank you for your very useful contributions here, Prof.
I took time to read through your every post on this thread (and that took me some two days) and I must say I'm wowed by your vast knowledge in virtually every area related to science and engineering!
If I had seen your posts two years earlier, I guess I would have been better guided in my research choice area. Nevertheless, I'm happy for the guidance you are offering here and it has really opened my eyes to see that research does pay afterall.
I am a PhD student of Environmental Geophysics here in Nigeria, working on subsurface tracer transport monitoring using 3D electrical resistivity methods.
I'll be reaching out to you for some advice relating to obtaining software for analysis and publications in reputable journals.
Once again, thank you for finding time to respond to just about every question and for the very resourceful posts you make in here!
