Toddler banned from attending nursery because deformed skull ‘would scare other children’

A little girl was banned from a nursery school because her deformed skull could frighten other children.

Sofya Zakharova, 2, was born with a deformed skull and her parents were told she should get surgery before applying for a place in a nursery.

Operations for Sofya have been delayed and experts have warned that unless she mixes with other children her development will be affected.

The child's parents Svetlana and Rasul, who live in the village of Alatany in Bashkortostan, a federal region of Russia, have revealed how their daughter was discriminated against because of her peculiar features.

Asides her deformed skull, Sofya's fingers and toes are also fused together. It is not currently known what condition the little girl has.

Narrating how Sofya was discriminated against by schools, the mother said she was told: "First, you need to arrange an operation so she can go to nursery school like an ordinary child."

Sofya’s grandfather Sergei Mikhailov said: "They have such a catastrophe here. They said they would do the operation, but then were silent about this."

The family said that they do not get any disability benefits for Sofya.

Educational psychologist Ekaterina Belan said: "The sooner she gets the experience of interactions, the easier it will be for her to cope with the conditions in which she lives and grows. The more interactions she gets, the easier it will be for her to accept herself for who she is."

Prosecutors have now become involved and are looking into why doctors have not yet operated on Sofya and the nursery for refusing to accept her.

Abi they don't know tz from that tender age whatever they're been taught will stick and never leave them..

but if u reason am well u cant blame the school. they other children are toddlers, most of them will be petrified.

that same word of God says in all thy getting get wisdom. if one is so unwise to let one kid scar others then thats bad. maybe they could admit her wen they've grown or they enroll her in schools with special needs. she ma will get hurt from the ill words and ridicule she'll be receiving

As much as I would want to condemn this singular of discrimination, I would also like to take cognizance of the fact that those in the school are toddlers. It's a nursery school not an adult class. These children can be so funny at times. Nevertheless, the child doesn't look scary tho, deformity isn't a sin.

As an individual, I have lived with a child with such similar deformity while growing up and it did not make me intellectually deformed.

I won’t blame the school though, kids can be funny at times, they have a business to run and salaries to pay, if the other kids leave are they going to live on one kid’s fee?
It’s a harsh decision but we should look at it from another perspective

2 wrongs don't make a right, that a child is naturally deformed doesn't mean that he or she should be denied the basic right of education.

Several measures can be taken to protect the child from abuse from the other children. If the school teachers and management come together to protect the little girl, she will have good or even better quality of education than the rest.

Saying that the naturally deformed child shouldn't go to school because of her condition is inhumane and bad on all levels.

Small children can always be controlled. If they are taught not to make fun of deformed people and also punish those who do, the child will have a wonderful life.

This is very sensitive. It would be very emotional for the child growing up and for other children too.

I think it's better if the child is home schooled for now and later on taken to a special needs school.

As insensitive as this might sound ... I support the killing of severely deformed children at birth... all you are going to do is put them though a life of hardship and unnecessary stare for the rest of their lives ... which isn't fair to them ...
