Thanks. I use a Samsung note but I want to switch and join the iPhone gang. I just want to know which makes more economical sense buying it here or buying it in Canada.
IMO the price difference might be inconsequential

Hello drcynthia, I sent you a pm request. Was hoping you could help me with some enquiries. Hope your family is fine?
drcynthia:
Good day all, pls with regards to Ethiopian airline, the 10kg allocated to infant ticket, is the 10kg for carry on into the airplane or with other luggages?

Haven't been on this thread for quite a while, only to come back and see arguments everywhere. Those of you fighting ehn, I have marked down your monikers oh...dont sha carry your aggression to Canada is all I can say.

I'm paying $6000 as tuition this session in school while my class mates who are international students pay $20,000+...the difference in fees for a year alone would cover the EE process (just saying....walks out)

PS: Canada govt grant pays off almost 90% of this amount and it's like I'm not paying for anything, by the way!
Wow..Thanks bro for the divine intervention and conclusion as I see it and this I do explain to most close friends and families who consult me but you know few of our naija oversabi, they will argue with you and later find out the hard truth... Thanks again bro for this confirmation. Remain blessed

LANDING GIST BY WHIZQUEEN

Travel Date - 9th September 2019
Airline - EgyptAir
Routes - Lagos - Cairo - Toronto
Destination - Mississauga, GTA, Ontario

Left home around 9am heading to the airport with my mom, dad, sis & bro, Less than 30 minutes we got there no much traffic. I took pictures and videos of the last view of naija till a very long time. My Dad dropped us off at the entrance gate and went to park. My mom, sis and I carried one bag each and we passed. My brother dulled a little and the security at the gate refused him entry Cos he wasn’t traveling. I went to intervene and begged baba kept a straight face. He asked for 500 to let him in, I went to retrieve my purse from momsy, picked 200 and squeezed it into his hand and dragged my brother in. Immediately I called my popsy not to dull Incase they ask if he’s traveling he should say he’s going to Dubai with his family that his wife and kids took the luggage in with his passport Incase they ask. But they didn’t so he entered

During all these time my momsy found herself at quarantine stand with my food grin grin grin mommy howww?? I said stand at EgyptAir stand how did you get here?? She said they asked her if it foodstuff in the sack and she answered in affirmation. They asked 2k for Quarantine certificate,, I was furious. I insisted on not paying as it was illegal. The sillly woman asked me to read one banner, I did and it never mentioned paying 2k. I told her anyone can come up with receipts and getting receipts for payment doesn’t mean it’s a legal payment. I bluntly told her if she wanted tips she should ask and I’d give her but trying to defraud me wouldn’t work. Naso the woman vex ooo called her colleague said see this girl ooooo... who are you? what do I need your money for. I told her it was not right and never call me a girl cos you don’t know who da hell I am cool. I’m not gonna pay this money and we’d both sleep here today. She asked to search my bag I said “you have no rights too, put the bag in a scanner” if the scanner picks anything I’d gladly open” she moved on to the next person. I told her I was leaving and won’t wait any more second if she doesn’t scan the bag or let me go. My mom was already panicking by then I told her not to fear oo today na today I’m not paying a dime. I opened that Twitter post from NAQS about the denying collecting money illegally from people. The woman said she won’t read it that I should go to the website. One man came and started speaking English. He tried to talk in a low tone to pacify me, I told him I understand but won’t pay. He said no problem I should let them search the bag. I opened it and they did. I left my mom with the bag and carried my small bag to get my brother to assist with carrying the big bag. Before I returned my mom paid the 2k embarassed embarassed I said but “I told you not to pay you just let this people scammed me after all the mouth I don make” I was so furious ehn. She said “owo ayo la n san” in English it means it’s a cheerful gift that I should leave it sheybe it’s her money. God I was so pissed.

CHECK-IN

We got back to EgyptAir stand to weigh my luggage. My box was weighing 32kg gen gen my sack was 26kg, hand luggage 16kg my back pack 8kg grin grin heck I’m just entitled to two 23kg bags and one 8kg. How did I get here??

My box empty alone weighed 5.3kg. Time to reshuffle,,, the guy said I should bring them out into a different bag and suggested I take them home or pay for excess luggage. I asked how much it would be, he said he had no idea he would have to call someone to help me with the charges but I should first unpack and know the weight of the additional luggage. So I started removing stuffs. All my heavy jeans, Tiger nuts, natives, oats, milo and some foodstuff , I removed them and put in the new sack. My box came down 24kg so I wrapped my food bag 26kg. I unpacked my hand luggage removed 2 spags, my jean and some stuff. I hid my back pack with my sister and only showed them my small box. I mostly had sweaters and 3 bottles of palm oil inside the box. I put the palm oil inside maltina bottles, wrapped them in newspaper and put in ziplock bags. I tucked each bottles inside my thick socks and wrapped with my cardigan wink the oils in my food bag was buried inside my garri, elubo and seasoning ziplock bags. You can never find them. They all made it safely.

The new bag was about 16kg so I asked how much will I pay for the new bag? One very annoying man came and said it was 210$ from the airline website but I should pay $105 that’s half. I told him I didn’t have dollars he should let’s talk in naira he said they don’t accept any other currency only USD I begged and begged. I told him, I didn’t have naira to change at the airport and the exchange guys refused to accept transfer or pay with card. He said I should go and look for ATM. My brother went to withdraw 20k, I changed 35$ and went to beg the man he gave me one wicked look and said what’s this rubbish. I told him that’s all the cash I had and I was ready to pay the balance with transfer to his account. He said he wasn’t joking that he won’t take naira.

My brother went again to withdraw another 20k so now I decided to change another 35$ summing it up to 70usd. I told him I doubled it that he should just help me as the bag is just 16kg that the stuff inside doesn’t even worth up to that. At this point I was already tired with the begging and begging. He insisted that it was 105$ and he won’t collect anything less, I should stop following him around.

I went back to my people I wanted to recheck what and what was inside Cos I’m not gonna spend 36k to transport 16kg of bag when I can cargo 49kg for 75k. It’s not worth it. Wetin dey inside the bag sef no worth 36k.

That was how I cancelled paying for excess luggage and cargo instead. The guy that has been hustling for me with the man started begging me that I shouldn’t be angry that he would help me talk to the man, that I should wait. I waited for 10 minutes immediately I didn’t see him like this I went to check in the other bags and left the extra one. He came back and saw me on the line. He wasn’t happy. I was ready to give him 500 for his troubles but I didn’t see him by the time I was done.

So I checked in my two bags both weighed 50kg total and it went in. My hand luggage was 10kg, the lady wrote it on the tag and said I should not add anything to it as they would reweight it at the boarding gates again. Yiiiimu tongue me that still has one backpack that’s like 8kg cheesy she gave my my boarding pass, I had earlier checked in online and picked window sit on both leg of the trip, it was the same sits on the boarding pass printed.

Went back to meet my family, we sat, ate, took pictures, videos and we watched people saying good byes to their family. Different kinda teary faces Chai cry embarassed I asked my mom if she would cry, she said she won’t. Well, there’s only one way to find out right? We had about 1 hr left so I asked each of them what they would miss about me. It’s funny how my sister could say she would miss my craziness!!!!!! I’ve not even left she’s calling me crazy ah children of nowadays sha. My mom talked about me not getting under any pressure whatsoever to send money home o. I should take my time, settle well and build my own life first before worrying about anything that they are working and are fine. Incase things gets hard (which we don’t pray for) I shouldn’t hesitate to call and ask for help. My brother gave me a necklace with my name on it, and my sister gave me a painting she made for me.

The first call for my flight was made and we decided to pray and sing. We did Snapchat video selfies again lol we’re just too vain in my family. It’s not easy watching the first child leave just like that na.

I suddenly remembered I had to reshuffle my hand luggage and move things into the box. My mistake here was I should have moved the bulky clothes into the box and leave my laptop in my back pack. I thought it was the weight they would use and not look at the puffiness of the bag but I was wrong.

I headed for the gates and my sister followed me down till the point they asked her to go back and the tears came. I went back outside to hug them one more time, my mom was busy making videos, my brother was looking lost, hard guy hard guy my fathers eyes were dripping water already to think we were never on the same page and we disagreed on everything and he seems to be the most emotional one right now? My eye got teary too... I headed for the gates again with my sister we hugged for almost 5 minutes we were both crying this time. I couldn’t hold it back lol. I told her not to worry she’d join me soon and we would be making video calls. She went back and I proceeded. The lady that confirmed my passport and ticket asked why I was crying if I was missing my husband already I said no. She said who. I was mute. She asked if I wanted to go back home as it wasn’t too late. Auntyyyyyy shey na you them send nii? Abi o re yin ni ma? I laughed and she said I shouldn’t cry, it’s for the best reasons so I should be strong. I smiled and thanked her.

I got to the scanner, and it picked my small box. They asked me to open it they found my milk and the lady said she doubt if it was allowed in Canada but she was engrossed with asking me about how I did the visa thingy she closed the bag. And begged for my contact and ask if I could put her through. I said no problem. I write my number and email out for her. That was how I used scope to pass my milk even though she saw it. I got to the boarding gate, they refused me entry that my back pack is too big and won’t move. That I should offload them or they will offload my luggage and I’d miss the trip.

I dunno where I got the confidence from but I didn’t even freat. I just brought out my phone, made videos and asked one of their staff to even snap me grin grin she kuku did help. I sat down and put ELDee - I’m leaving song on repeat lol. I was honestly unbothered. Two other people came with same issue and I got even more relaxed. They can’t deny all three of us from traveling na Cos of one extra bag. The other lady ripped her bag open looking for what to trash. For me oo, I’m not trashing anything. I removed my perfume and jewelries and tucked it in my jacket pocket the jacket itself weighs 2.3kg alone. Removed my laptop and held it on my hand and they asked to weight the bags. The two bags was 16kg instead of 10kg shocked me sef I dey pack load oo Kilode!! That devilish man then showed up!!! The one that wanted to charge me 105$ he said “so this was your plan Abii? You will miss this flight today or you trash those things. I guess he was angry I wasted his time earlier and didn’t eventually pay. Lol I was still very much chilled. I sat back and was editing my pictures lol. I raised my face up after like 3 minutes the other lady had been allowed. The two captains entered the plane and the other guy was about to enter. Omo I hopped up and put a smile on my face with some Pittiful look and they let me lol. I’m pretty sure I was one of the last people that boarded Cos the plane was filled by the time I got in. I found my sit.

First Trip took about 5 hrs 20 minutes. We took off exactly 2.40pm from MM1. Inflight entertainment to Cairo was just there. The food was okay but we had shared screens as it was a small aircraft, no charging ports either. My battery was already 25% with all my snap-chatting and videos. I couldn’t watch Netflix as I planned. I used my laptop to charge at some point but I later slept off. 5 hrs trip to Cairo was tiring but we arrived past 9pm and had a 4 hr layover. Cairo airport only has 30 minutes of free WiFi, the charging ports at the airport has a funny kinda socket so I couldn’t charge again. I used my laptop to charge.

I bought pizza, water and fayouz during the lay over at Cairo airport for $10 total. In no time, 4 hrs was over. Tho it was very boring Cos I couldn’t use my phone much.

We boarded the second trip and my smaller box was retrieved and added to my check-in luggage. I was told I’d get it at Toronto that it was too heavy. I was happy ehn chai you have no idea. The aircraft this time was really big with charging port, more leg room, blanket, socks and pillow. They gave us a small gift pack with ear plugs, pen, wipes, toothpaste and brush inside. Then the longest 12 hrs journey began. I saw a movie and slept. The food came and passed me, by the time I opened my eyes they had served the first meal and people were packing their plates. Abi e ya werey niii? How did my food miss me?? They said I was sleeping. Oga bring my food I’m awake, I got the food. My Goodness it was jollof rice, chicken and salad. So i could have missed this ehn We were served again about 2 hrs to the end of the trip.

I arrived Toronto Pearson Airport around 7.50am 10th September 2019. It’s real now. I connected to the WiFi and used Snapchat location filter. Sent messages to my friends and family that I’ve arrived. Immigration checks took less than 30 minutes. I did my Social Insurance Number registration took less than 5 minutes. Went to claim my baggage.

Changed 50usd to 51.4CAD pls don’t change money at the airport oo issa scam. I only needed that for taxi. I picked a taxi from the airport straight to my Airbnb apartment for 49CAD the Indian driver didn’t offer me change. He help me offload at the house and my host welcomed me in. The other people staying in the Airbnb apartment I’m at are a couple we took EgyptAir from Nigeria together. We met at the airport in Cairo but we didn’t know we were headed for the same destination. So I have new friends here. It’s hard for them to believe I’m a lone wolf and I don’t have family or close friends in Canada Cos They have a friend here, he took us to KFC, we bought chips and chicken Tuesday special. He also dropped me at the bank.

So far I’ve opened a new bank account with RBC , I didn’t go for the iPad option cos the requirements wasn’t okay by me. I have 3 accounts with RBC - Canadian Checking Account, US Savings and a Canadian e- savings. I got one temporary debit card, the new debit card and credit card will be delivered in a week.

I got a SIM card and mobile phone from Virgin mobile. I got a Samsung S9 for 60CAD monthly with unlimited calls to US and Canada, SMS and 4gb monthly data. There’s an activation charge of 40CAD and it’s same across all networks. They request for your SIN and Foreign passport , I didn’t pay a dime. I got a charger for my iPhone X for 6.99

I missed my way going to the mall to get the SIM card. I asked for direction at the bank which was a walking distance from home,, I opened google maps and it said 5 minutes drive. In my head I was using naija walks thinking 5 minutes drive should be 15 minutes walk oo.... I didn’t know I was in for a 45 minutes walk embarassed I had no internet so I couldn’t use the map. I got to one bus stop and asked, the first person I saw after walking for 15 minutes she said I was walking in the opposite direction and to go back to where I came from embarassed embarassed cry cry cry my goodness. I opted to take the bus. The crossing light held me for some seconds but luckily someone delayed the bus so I got in. I got to the bustop (the exact same place I came from) I asked how much it was, the bus driver said 3.75 I put in 5CAD waiting for my change and she said it doesn’t give change angry sad to think I even had change but I refused to use it lol. I got off and walked to the next bustop, the next buss was just leaving. I couldn’t shout or chase it. I had to wait for another 30 minutes for the next bus. I sat and it came. I dropped at Erin Mills City Center. I walked around the mall.

It looks really nice here, Mississauga seems really laid back. No much stress or hard life. Canada is fine abeg, after all my waka waka my legs wasn’t even dusty ooo, it seemed like I was just leaving the house.

I can’t wait to have everyone here. We all deserve a good life but now atleast you can refer to me as “WhizQueen Awon Temi ni Canada” cheesy cheesy cheesy

I made lotta videos. It would be out before the tomorrow morning.

*Modified

I forgot to mention EgyptAir doesn’t serve wine on board like Ethiopian air when I flew with them 2 weeks ago to Dubai. The food on EgyptAir was somewhat better,,, during the second trip my small box which was a hand luggage was checked in. So I picked all three bags at Toronto Pearson Airport.

LANDING GIST
PPR …. May 18th 2019
We had booked our flight with Ethiopian airline for 19th September with the mind of being flexible with the dates if either of us got a job before the said date. Well, we didn’t so we packed up our stuff and left naija on Gods appointed day.
We got all our bags from Musibau in Lagos, 5 23kg and 2 hand luggage for a family of 3 (an infant). Kept packing and repacking, weighing and re-weighing we thought we were good and then MIL sent packages to go with, we had to shed some of the things we had bought before to accommodate. Then we remembered winter boots and had to get a heavier jacket for me. Off we went to Tejuosho to get the things we needed and got thermal wears, jackets, socks, hats and gloves…. all great deals. I think Ejima or Okwy was the guy’s name. At the end of the day we had some stuffs outside that hadn’t made their way to bags. We had almost reconciled ourselves to pay for excess luggage
Day dawned bright and we booked an Uber, alongside a friend’s car to convey us to MMA. Traffic started to make us panic but thankfully we still made it in time.
MMA NAIJA
Na here drama take start o. So because of our plenty bags and hand luggage we needed a trolley, the porters outside said 2500…we tried bargaining dem no gree, okay so we paid and loaded all bags on it. On getting in, Quarantine said to bring one of our food bags (I had loaded two of our bags mostly with food and a few extras), I left them to sort it and went to check in… ET app kept giving error message when I tried on our way. Before I could get back to the bags I heard they issued one certificate and collected 3k…just like that! Oh these people just ripped my innocent husband chai. Okay o…next stop to weigh the bags. All of them were over 23kg…so we started re-arranging stuffs till we had only 2 excess bags, the guys around said we should settle them 30k to let it pass, hubby agreed. As we got to the counter the ET guy said since we have a connecting flight to Calgary it cant work, we have to upgrade the luggages…thank God we hadn’t parted with a whole 30k. So with just about 45mins to boarding, hubby ran up to their office to make payment for the 2 bags…ended up paying about 45k for it. By the time he came back we had little time to say goodbye to the fam. Thank God for that eventually because I didn’t get to see my mum cry…I later heard she was inconsolable, poor woman…I’m her only daughter and baby.
A family friend had sent an officer to help us before, the guy just took over from here…led us through customs and immigration on fast lane and into the plane we went.
FLIGHT
Flight was okay…ate most of the food all the way to Toronto except one I didn’t really understand. Bassinet was provided for my baby and we sat in front on both legs to accommodate it. It was only on Aircanada we didn’t have a place for baby and I had to carry her through the 4 hour flight. No free food here but I was already prepared for that as we had heard the gist before, got coffee and snack while waiting at Toronto…juice and water was free sha so I took, local girl cannot comman die of hunger na.
LANDING
So we landed at Toronto 8.30am Friday morning 20th and went through immigrations…I was told to sit with my baby while hubs stood with the lady, and then we were later called to sign and PR we were, the lady said that’s all, I said nope…seems youre forgetting something. I stood there o, said you haven’t welcomed me ma, she laughed and said Oh, ‘Welcome to Canada’, ehehn! Good geh.
On our way our we stopped by Newcomers stand and were told to do SIN, as we saw it was taking time and flight was in an hour we were told to do it in Calgary. Our mistake. We hadn’t even claimed baggages at this point, by the time we got to customs and had to present GTF we were told we may have missed our flight as it had just 10mins to spare…apparently the big carts were to be paid for and the smaller trolleys were the free ones, we didn’t know and had quickly hijacked the big ones, we had to pay a porter eventually about 16cad we changed at the airport. The guy helped us sha as we ran all the way to get boarding passes to Calgary but was placed on the next flight out.
CALGARY
So we landed Calgary and one of our bags was missing…another wahala. We searched and searched and had to report to AC, they found it eventually at Toronto with the manual tag from NGR and promised to send it to our address…which they did with an apology note. Grateful for my brother in law who came to pick us up from the airport, correct egusi and poundo was waiting for us at home. So because we landed on a Friday we couldn’t do much…it was midnight in naija but about 5pm local time…I managed to stay till about 8pm before going to sleep but for the next few days my husband was walking like he was on another planet…classic jetlag.
So Monday came and we did our SIN at service Canada, got SIM plans no phones, our phones are compatible, Opened accounts with RBC…newcomers package, checked out a few houses and settled on one (it was approved yesterday to move in next week, we sign the lease in 2days time), went to the registry for our health cards, visited the library for our library cards and even got one for my baby, visited CCIS and met with the SOPA counsellors (Dele, Aneta, Hasmik and Cecilia) was booked for other support services too, applied for CCB and visited Chinook centre .
It snowed today! My first time seeing it live apart from videos and on TV and I’m super grateful to God that something some people were born into and have taken for granted is a dream come true for me. This is putting it lightly. The journey is a huge lesson in Faith, patience and complete hope and trust in God.
I’ve been reading and silently participating on this nairaland thread since 2017…learnt a whole lot here, big thanks to Blackbuddy, Salford and other wonderful peeps always ready to contribute and answer questions.
NOV AOR family remains the best community ever!
Job search continues. We hope and trust God for the best.

Based on PMs I got from my last post, I’d like to clarify and explain how the Education/Loan system works according to my little experience. Please note, everything below is from personal exposure in Alberta and may not be 100% true for other provinces!

So obviously, the first thing to do is apply to a school. There are lots of schools around and preference can be based on field of study. E.g

-SAIT/NAIT for technical, business related and medical science courses
-Bow Valley College for Office management, Arts, Business related
-University of Calgary and University of Alberta for Bsc and Post-graduate
-Etc. Please avoid private colleges, it's not worth the tuition.

It is better to choose a course after adequate research (employment rate, entrance salary, job conditions etc). I know people who have gone to to school, finished and realized they wasted their time...and then start all over again, wasting money and precious years and sometimes accumulating over a hundred thousand dollars in student loan.

Minimum requirements for admission differ, could be a function of school / course. For instance, It’s SSCE for SAIT or in other cases you need Course by course evaluation.

Student Aid: There are two parts to this; student grant and student loan. Student grants are grants you dont have to pay back but you only qualify for them if you apply for student loan..student loan, you have to pay back in monthly installments six months after your studies. The tuition is paid directly to the school and balance paid to you. This balance is about 80% of living expense based on family size and its paid in lump sum.

E.g If your tuition and living expenses for a semester sums up to $10,000. Then tuition of eg $3000 is paid to the school and $7,000 sent to your account at the start of the semester. The percentage of this $10,000 that comes as grant depends on your family make-up, previous investment and family income (Those with children have upper hands here as they get more percentages of Grants)

So basically when you apply online, you would be asked to mail some documents and the school would be contacted to confirm your studentship before funds are dispersed.

Note: The requirement is, you must have been resident in the Alberta for 12months prior to applying. But if you are new to Canada and can prove that you have been resident in Alberta since your arrival in the country, you are eligible for the loan (you would need an ID card from Alberta to prove apply).

Another question is on how much you can combine with work. As a PR you dont have limitations on how many hours you are legally allowed to work. You can work to cover your basic living and keep the loan part of the money and refund once you are done with school and no longer require it. With weekend work and some sort of driving for small deliveries, you can make enough money to live within your means.

For those who landed recently, how soon does one get issued the PR card? Still 45 days? Or now 15 days?

I was told 6 to 8 weeks. I’ve spent almost 3 weeks now and I’m yet to receive the card so I guess it’s not 15 days. But it differs from province to province.

Canada is ours.

Lovely weather in Calgary today! It's going to snow until tomorrow. Let's check if those winter tires and winter boots work grin grin grin

P.S: My son keeps asking if he can make a snowman. Lol
P.S2: once upon a child has gently used children items for good prices, doesn't really make sense to spend big money buying a winter coat or shoe that child will outgrow in 3 months. Dollarama has accessories (gloves etc).
