Re: Naija to Yankee Thoughts And Experiences by Hadampson(m): 6:34pm On Sep 27, 2019 |
I have realised almost every Nigerian has a bitter story to tell about a wicked, harsh or dubious uncle especially the ones in the hometown Is it just an African thing? Is it about transfer of aggression or what? Just why the bitterness from uncles? Like my uncle now, he promised heaven and earth to take me to Germany till now he hasn't. I have accepted my fate. If i don't have money to go to Germany, i go find one sane African country and start my life all over there. One thing is certain, i won't stay in Nigeria for long 17 Likes 1 Share |

MackyNaija: Huh ...for what reason did he want to do such a thing? Even if he had called immigration on you, ICE will not just come and arrest you just like that. It takes times through court orders and for a reason too. |

Hadampson: The problem is the expectation that we have given ourselves. Do not expect anything from anyone. If your dream is to go to Germany, start working towards it on your own all by yourself. You can do it. It may take time, but you'll eventually get there. Don't expect any uncle to help you. If we start reducing our expectations of people, our disappointments will start reducing. When I first moved to the US at a young age, I didn't know anyone here. I was told by my dad that a certain son of one of his adopted dad's kids (whatever that is called) was in the US. I didn't care. I did all I could all independently and moved smoothly. Not long after I arrived, I was told a sketchy story that the guy died. How he died, I don't know till this day. But I never cared, because it had absolutely nothing to do with me. If I had connected with him before moving to the US, his death would have probably impacted my life more. This is not to say we shouldn't learn to connect with others. As a matter of fact, networking is great. It is not about what you know, but who you know. However, there are very many things we can do on our own without having to involve others, especially in this immigrant/non-immigrant move. Let's identify those things and work towards our goals by ourselves. Thing is, many of these our uncles who abandon us when we get here did the whole process on their own, without the support of any uncle. Therefore, they do not owe us any support either. If they could do it, we can too. Let's reduce our expectations or reliance. 40 Likes |

Beautyaddy:The issue was/is supposed to be a simple one. Both of them stopped taking my calls and replying my WhatsApp messages a year apart. Why? Money. They'd tot I'd come begging them every minute. The situation was a shameful one for them because I actually tool steps to verify they were available and deliberately avoiding me. Fast forward to May/June 2019, they are frustrated, ashamed and angry I didn't tell them about or invite them to my my graduation neither do they have or know what to tell people when asked how I am doing... BUT na them been no wan follow me talk. For now, we are all distant. Make everybody deh their lane. 23 Likes |

I keep telling my padi for naija, Do analysis of how you plan to get things done before coming here as a student If you intended to stay here permanently after school, your best bet is via marriage because employers don't really sponsor intl students for H1b anymore Few things will help you be successful with that: Don't be out of status. Stay in school Date extensively. Go on dates, social functions, school activities, join a gym or an activity that interests you. This will help you understand the American culture better. It'll give you an idea of a partner you would understand and relate with. This will help you avoid unnecessary arguments in your relationships and draw you closer to your partner. Don't be in a rush to file your papers. Read all the informations, speak with your partner. Let him or her be actively involved too. Don't hide information. It might come up during your interview. When your greencard gets issued, don't start "carrying shoulders" and bail on your partner. You can still loose that sh*t. If you're in abusive relationship, document everything. Don't take things for granted. Violence isn't something to cope with, it can take your life. If the marriage eventually didn't work out, don't leave in a bitter note. Remain friends. You'll never know when you'll need someone's signature on a piece of paper especially someone you've lived with. 51 Likes 9 Shares |

vocalprince:1. Start by joining the GRE thread. Writing qualifying exams helps potential schools have a way of measuring your ability. It also makes you appear as a serious student when you go to the visa interview. 2. Don't understand the question but do not use an agent, you can do it all by yourself. Follow the Gre and student visa thread. They worked for me. 3. I addressed this in point 1. 4. Check online. Decide on what course you wanna do, use school rank, location, current research going on in the department, cost of living, cost of tution to natrow down your list from say 20 to between 3 to 5. 3-5 has costs associated with it. Not too little or not too much choices. 5. You might see someone on the student thread attending a school you want to attend, they will be in the best position to talk about funding. Some schools post it on their new page when they receive funds. A PhD is the easier route to guarantee finding. Are you ready to do what it takes to 'japaa'? Then do a PhD, most come with excellent funding opportunities. 7 Likes |

Roughly 12 hours ago, a friend in school got an Offer of Employment from the company where he is currently interning at. We don shout for phone and happy tire. Winnings exite me, one less dude worrying about what the future holds... One more dude I can go to borrow money from. That's the picture he sent me to honor my wish to pop something on his special day. Waiting for my other gees to get offers soon... 20 Likes
