Pls edit your comment, there is no Igala in Anam or Otuocha. Igala is only in Nzam which is one village in Anambra west LGA. Anam is 100% Igbo, Otuocha is made up of Aguleri, Umuleri and Umuoba Anam and they are 100% Igbo.

The igalas i know in agulari may be settlers but the point is that we have igalas who are indiginous to Anambra. Atleast we both agree that Nzam folks speak igala and they are part of omambala..

Surprised you guys didn't notice the obvious distortion in how the name Anambra came about. Which one be Anam branch?

By the way i am from Oyi LGA and i speak and understand igala even as an Igbo man!

There is no distortion to the origin of Anambra, the OP is right, Its Anam-bra(nch) or as some will say Omambala which is a river along the Anam axis.

. We keep repeating the same mistake over and over: dialect should not be equated with language or tribe. These subdivisions only leads to confusion. Igbo is Igbo, Hausa is Hausa any where, Yoruba is Yoruba no mater if its ijebu dialect or ONDO dialect or is spoken in Benin republic or Togo. Just term in Yoruba simple. The izon u mentioned for bayelsa and ijaw are related. In delta. Agbor. And ukwauni are just subdialects. They are not tribes Or Far apart languages from each other and they share common ancestry. Mainland China, Taiwan and Hong Kong still identify with the Chinese. Even though dialect differs

Easy bro, Nzam is the headquarters of Anambra west and speaks Igala. That's why ABS sometimes broadcasts in Igala to carry them along but they are in extreme minority. Not sure they are up to 50,000 in population.
Nzam is a bilingual community, they speak igala as well as Igbo and they are now mostly assimilated into the greater Igbo communities around them hence they bear Igbo names majorly.

Read a story once told by the reverred Igwe Aguleri Idigo I and his account of how the Name Anambra came about was that it was gotten from mmiri omambala which the white man pronounced as river anambra... I agree with this school of thought more cos the river pre-dated the birth of Anambra state. The anam branch story was a first for me today.

Stop mis-informing the public by using the word most. There is only 2 communities in Anambra west where Igala and Igbo are spoken. The rest speak 100% Igbo. Anambra west has about 15 communities and Igala can be heard in 2, how does 2 become most out of 15? Who told you they can choose to be called any of Igbo or Igala?
