Commentor: Do you know that Hong Kong has virtually no import and export duties and at one time, it was a manufacturing center of the world. It was once the largest importer and exporter of watches in the world. Imports don't stop you from having a prosperous manufacturing sector. Bad mouthing imports by calling it dumping. Dumping is described as "The practice of selling a product in a foreign market at an unfairly low price (a price that is lower than the cost in the home market, or which is lower than the cost of production) in order to gain a competitive advantage over other suppliers. Dumping is considered an unfair trade practice under GATT and World Trade Organization agreements." Calling all imports dumping is simply badmouthing 2 Likes 2 Shares |

thesolutions:as you rightly said, the North are producing it Not importing from across the border. No one is stopping you from producing which is positive for the economy. But don't import. We know it's your money but spending it across the border affects all of us, negatively. Importation is our worst enemy in this country. It kills industries before they are even up and running. Left alone the new rice factory recently built will just close down. Please I want that border to remain close. Benin was complaining. That shows how much these guys are raping us and you are here saying another thing. Buhari lock the border and swallow the key 5 Likes 3 Shares |

The easiest way to introduce ANY form of evil into Nigeria is to TARGET IGBO FIRST. The rest of the country will clap and hail you. By the time you are done with the Igbo and you get to the others, before they realize IT IS TOO LATE! Why are the IGBO screaming after all it is not only them? The question should be WHY ARE YOU ALL SILENT! So why don't they keep quiet just like YOU so we can all die in silence? Lunatics everywhere! |

Driving from Lagos to Abuja, less than 6 customs check points. Lagos to Onitsha more than 10 customs check points. What are they checking? I don't support illegal business, but the guys are actually frustrating genuine business through intimidation. It's not about Igbos alone, it's a circle of pain because when one eye is bleeding, the other one feels it as well. Ask yourself, where is the N9b made by Customs in one day going to (if the N9b story is true)? If we don't all wake up as a people and condemn extortion in this country, one day they'll ask us to pay VAT for child birth. It's not about Igbo, Yoruba or Hausa. What is bad is bad |

Naive people don't understand how smuggling works. They pretend they care about sharp practices but it is tribal bigotry that drives their fake virtue signaling and sanctimony. Nobody should take them seriously. Illegal business don't pay duties! Border closures don't affect smugglers, it only punishes legitimate importers. The issue is that the target IS LEGITIMATE IMPORTERS!! NOT SMUGGLING!!! THAT IS THE POINT!!! The claim is to improve local production, they will FAIL!!! What work force, electricity, financial structures, legal system, security, does Nigeria have?? Production, employment, development no be beans!! You don't spend 60 years destroying your country with bigotry, ethnic supremacy, corruption, injustice and wake up one day to shut your borders to spur local production. Just more Alice in wonderland silliness that got us to where we currently are. Lunatics everywhere! 1 Like 1 Share |

VISTIN: As much as I respect Igbos, they have done more harm to the economy than good by importing almost everything. A nation does not grow by importing what they can produce. If you are not going to deny this, there were things done in Nigeria, let us say,for100 naira, some people saw this and went to import its replica and sold them for 50 naira tbereby killing the indigenous producer. We cannot grow like this in a thousand years. 6 Likes 3 Shares |

Premiumwriter:If other country close their own border too, how will Nigeria economy survive. What economy are you talking about? The one kept afloat by the South? How much is the IGR From the North. And if someone in diaspora decide to export to Nigeria, will it also affect you negatively? CBN has restricted issuing Forex for staple food but we business people obtain Forex from diaspora for their businesses only for your government to confiscate the goods as contraband. Importation is our worst enemy in this country. It kills industries before they are even up and running.Industries close in Nigeria because of high cost of production. Has the government been able to reduce production cost. If not, how is it possible for someone to import and pay all the custom duties and still sell the product cheaper than the ones produced here in Nigeria. Nigerian government is selfish and cared about revenue than development. Increase in vat, increase in electricity charge increase in everything revenue while they do nothing about real development. That is why they are after the businesses dealing with buying and selling. Left alone the new rice factory recently built will just close down. How much will the rice cost? Our own locally refined rice is easily counterfeited and still sold at exorbitant price. Please I want that border to remain close. Benin was complaining. That shows how much these guys are raping us and you are here saying another thing.sycophantsOnly sycophants can say this. What benefit do you get by government closure of the border. You are speaking to protect the image of someone. Not that it is right. Let Other country close their border and see Nigerian government cry more than Benin republic. |
