Fans to Abraham, Tomori: You’ll regret dumping Nigeria
punchng.com Oct 4, 2019 5:04 AM

Tomori and Abraham
’Tosin Oluwalowo

Nigerian fans have reacted to the invitation of Chelsea’s Tammy Abraham and Fikayo Tomori to the England national team.

England coach, Gareth Southgate, listed both players in his squad for the Three Lions’ Euro 2020 qualifiers against Czech Republic and Bulgaria on October 11 and 14 respectively.

The fans, who took to Twitter, said the British-born players of Nigerian descent would have been better off playing for the Super Eagles.

According to them, they have no future with the Three Lions.

They cited John Fashanu, Ugo Ehiogu and Gabriel Agbonlahor as players who in the past shunned Nigeria, but never made it with the England national team.

“In Nigeria, you would be celebrated whether you win or lose. But English press would destroy your sanity. They would bench you!!! Learn from the past,” Uche Okoye tweeted.

Congratulations, but, Tammy, Nigeria is the better option, England will have u play second fiddle to Harry Kane’s career,” Lee Okugbeni also tweeted.

This was corroborated by John Idoko, who tweeted, “I hope you don’t get dumped like many players of Nigeria descent before you.”

“England will ruin your career like they did to Fashanu and others. You should have played for Nigeria,” Chris Ezekiel also added.

“England will cap Fikayo Tomori and Tammy Abraham just to stop them from playing for Nigeria. In two years time, I assure you, they will be begging for call- ups. Remember Agbonlahor,” Sam Oyeniran tweeted.

I can guarantee y'all that Ebere Eze sees Nigeria as second choice and if he has any solid plans for his career he is targeting an English call up

NFF tactics and suaveness will not convince a player to play in a disarrayed football structure

Iwobi is not foreign born.

Regardless, your point still stands. Foreign players will always be an integral part of our footballing system. If a foreigner is of Nigerian descent and merits being on our team, there's no harm in pursuing them.

I know, that is why i said dual citizen.

In an interview after his first call up to the under 20s. He talked about his desire to play for Nigeria at senior level. That interview was taken down by QPR tv.

Ofcourse things change but he has always been interested in playing for Nigeria. We are the ones not looking his way.

Some of us here are worst than racist. So because someone is born abroad makes him lesser Nigerian?

Here we are agitating and refusing the idea of infusing some of our sons born abroad who re willing to play for us with the excuse that they aren't dedicated and also blocks the inclusion of locally groomed players.

Imagine the current super eagles without the likes of Iwobi Aina, Ekong, balogun, the same ekong and balogun oliseh and siasia said aren't good and strong enough for African football later went on to form a defensive combo that have seen us through the past 3 years.

We really need to reason like pple who are open to new ideas and development instead of allowing sentiment and emotions becloud our sense of reasoning.

Tufiakwa! Some of us are worst than vipers angry

Yes, somebody with dual citizenship is definitely less Nigerian than somebody whose loyalty lies only to Nigeria

Ekong, Balogun, Aina are really crumbs that have fallen to us from European nations, but have distracted us from the main issue, OUR FOOTBALL STRUCTURE IS IN DISARRAY

You may comfort yourself with the crumbs that have fallen to you from the European table, that does not hide the fact that we are beggars in the midst of plenty

Why are you then scared that he would change once he got to the EPL

Is it because that would be when he has THE CHANCE to choose?

The lure of England might be too much to resist. Eze can contribute to the super eagles right now.

That's the power of imperialism and you can't do anything to change it. Nevertheless that doesn't stop African nations from tapping from the goods of our illustrious sons and daughters born abroad who identify with us just because we feel they re less African.

Your super eagles is made up of foreign born player. Remove all the foreign born and dual citizen players from the Super Eagles, what kind of team would you have now?

No Iwobi, Aina, Ekong, Ebuehi, Semi Ajayi, Balogun.

These players will continue to play an integral part of our future.

Without Nigeria Troost Ekong would be in Norway on loan from Gent.

Don't get me wrong i like all those guys but i wouldn't lose any sleep.

Nigeria is bigger than any one player. Even if you were naming local born players I still wouldn't care.

That is a nonsensical proposition with no substance whatsoever.

Do you know how many sitting governors, members of Senate, Representatives and other elected officials have dual citizenship. Add to that High Court judges and Chief judges, Ministers, Commissioners, etc.

Look at Nigeria and look at the % of middle class parents that have had thier children in the USA. I wonder WHY❓

Do you know what percentage of Nigerian players past and present that have dual citizenship. It actually is in the larger majority.

The question then becomes what makes you a loyal citizen. Having one Nigerian passport alone according to you.

It is the bitter truth, Tammy Abraham is not as Nigerian as Chukwueze

He can even decide not to be Nigerian, or when to be Nigerian

What we get is crumbs, we have the capability to produce more

As far as we keep getting crumbs we won't be able to look inwards and develop our own, this is akin to slavery

Having one passport determines that your loyalty lies with only one country

Can you accuse Tammy Abraham of not being loyal to Nigeria? Can you?

You can't say we don't want foreign born, once a player is eligible to play for us it's very OK for us to approach such player, Every country does it even countries with superb organisation. There's no embarrassment if we approach a player and he turn us down, Spain approached Laporte he said no they did to Griezman too he said no Costa turned Brazil down for Spain, Jorginho flirted with his native Brazil for a call-up but them no look his side till Italy capped him after rejecting them earlier nobody was embarrassed. we Nigerians like to dey proud for nothing we aren't even top 3 best African team in history, if we see foreign born who will add value to our team we approach if he turn us down we'll move on

As much as I would love to be on the same side of your argument, it appears you missed the whole point. You still lending more credence to my argument in that we want things and we want them now! Dont get me wrong, I have no reason to hate foreign borns. However, let us remember we have our own lives as well to build. If you are gonna be looking for foreign borns to add quality, trust me, you are bound to find thousands. Comb every club academy in England and you will find that the bedrock is always gonna be Nigerian kids. We need to put our own house in order. Thats the point I am raising
