Margaret Amoakohene, chairperson of the anti-sexual harassment committee of the University of Ghana (UG), says there is no evidence that two of its lecturers seen in the sex-for-grades video documentary slept with their alleged victims.

Yaw Gyampo, a professor of political science, and Paul Butakor, a lecturer at the college of education, were seen soliciting sex from students in a 13-minute video documentary released by the BBC Africa Eye on Monday.

Boniface Igbeneghu, a lecturer and former sub-dean of the faculty of arts at the University of Lagos (UNILAG), was also caught on camera sexually harassing an undercover reporter who posed as a 17-year-old admission seeker in the institution.

Amoakohene was quoted as saying though she agrees that the lecturers’ behaviour was unacceptable and should be investigated, there is no evidence that they slept with any student.

According to Citi News, she said the allegations could only be justified in a case where the lecturers were caught having illicit affairs with their students and awarding them marks that they do not deserve or marking them down because they refused their advances.

“If you look at the transcript that they added, there is no evidence of sex for grade. I agree that the lecturers misbehaved and so you will discuss these as unacceptable behaviours that should be investigated but there was no indication of sex for grades,” Amoakohene was quoted to have said.

“In one case, it was about the national service placement. Who needs grades at national service? She completed and she was looking for placement.

“In the other case according to the transcript, the lady approached him and said she wanted him to be a mentor. She actually confirmed she wasn’t his student but asked that he mentors her. So where is the grade involved in this?
“You are able to discuss grades and sex when you find a lecturer who is dating his own students, and either unnecessarily giving them grades that they don’t deserve or marking them down because they have refused your advances. But in the two cases that are cited, I don’t see sex for grades.”

Isaac Agyemang, president of UG student representative council (SRC), was said to have advised students who are victims of sexual harassment to cooperate with ongoing investigations.

“As it stands now, these are allegations that have come up. Until they are proven guilty our remarks will be speculative,” Agyemang was quoted to have said.

“But all these people captured in the video will duly be investigated within the remits of the University of Ghana. Our fingers are crossed as an SRC so any student who has been a victim shouldn’t shy away from the SRC.”

Gyampo said he would sue the BBC over the sex-for-grades documentary. He also said the documentary could not establish anything against him.

Game on..

Allegation said sex for grades, documentary showed something else.

Why didn't the undercover reporter disguise as a student seeking for better grade in exchange for sex?

That way we will know the lecturers true response to such matters.

Could it be they tried that first and the men didn't fall?

When it comes o the true sense of the word 'sex for grades' the only person that implied it's what they do and even verbally excused it as not bad in the clip is that Dr. Boniface of Unilag.

In this instance I think University of Ghana has a point as it relates to the caption 'sex for grades'

I love this.., we dont know we shot ourselves on d foot when we were mouth lashing our own lecturer. The reason we can never go forward in this world.. Ooooh, do u guys think there is no fraud, sex for marks, drugs related offenses and even child sex trafficking in the US and other nations? There are.. But what do they do, the act up in mature ways, investigate n prosecute the suspects if found guilty.. In our own cases what do we do? We use the social media to pass judgment, push the accused into depression n possible suicide n come out to behave like we're so righteous..now the world has known us in a different ways, no one wants to do business with us, no one want their children to be educated in our country, yet we feel the government is the reason we fall.. Hmmmmmm, until we learn to be educated, we will never n can never move forward in life. Let wisdom lead

Be logical bro...

That's one thing I have against most Nigerian youths, they seem to have lost the capacity to critically look at a case and analyse it logically not spewing emotions everywhere like a wailing banshee.

Based on the evidence shown, did they actually sleep with those students or give them marks for sex? They propositioned the students inappropriately, so its gross misconduct from them, not the other issues BBC raised as headlines.
What would have been a better case is if the undercover reporters are actually registered students and they slept or made the lecturers admit that they will give them marks for sexual favours...the clincher would have been if a video evidence of such admissions were to be aired by BBC....

What y'all reacting to are gross misconduct or inappropriate behaviour from the lecturers and by this huge blunder from BBC,the real student slayers would go aground, restrategize and come back stronger to torment the victims.

A snake and a lion are different animals but you kill them the exact same way...NEVER LEAVE EITHER BREATHING. SO LONG THEY STILL BREATHE, YOU ARE NEVER SAFE.

Redemption is hard. Everyone that has passed through University in Nigeria has a story about sex for grade. Both students and lecturers are culpable. Students are prepare for corruption from primary school to higher institutions. Not all students and not all lecturers engage in this practice however the few that do cause significant damage. Ghana should carry out it's own investigation instead of outrightly dismissing the claim. I will say BBC should have delve deeper though to have proves beyond doubts.

Boniface was not promising a student grade upgrade as the undercover reporter Kemi claimed to be seeking admission and needed guidiance..

And the Reporter kemi willingly went to the man's church to meet him so as to start her set up, and she visited the man 3 times in his office unaccompanied..

Let's assume there is no evidence, what they are trying to say is that it is okay for them to engage in whatever sex misadventure at their workplace(the UNI).
Can he allow his child of that age to go out with the man in such settings?
Would you allow your employee to have an affair with your customer in your work environment?
As long this happened inside the school and the man promised her he would help his career(being her masters at that time), there is gross misconduct already but I understand that we have no dignity and we don't think that deeply.
I gave up on to Africa a long time ago.
