Minister of Education Adamu Adamu has said that public schools teachers would be given 1GB (Gigabyte) data free to enable them to access and browse the internet always, Igberetv reports.

Speaking at the occasion marking the World Teachers Day Celebration on Saturday in Abuja the Minister of State for Education, Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba, who represented the Minister of Education said the ministry was working with the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and other stakeholders to provide at least 1GB of data free to each public school teacher to browse the internet in order obtain materials for education of pupils and students.

He revealed that government was also working to obtain life insurance policy for all public school teachers and that families of all insured teachers would be given benefits upon the death of the holder. The benefits are: N1 million for male teachers, N1.2 million for female teachers while science teachers would get N1.5 million, he said.

Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami who represented President Muhammadu Buhari, said the theme of this year’s celebration, ‘Young Teachers: The Future of the Profession,’ highlighted the need for attracting and keeping the brightest minds and young talents in the teaching profession. He said that teachers are paramount in the educational development of the nation and promised that the federal government will partner with the state government to achieve quality education for Nigeria schools.

If I explain this thing now, I will be called some bad names by illogical fellows. But I must do the needful.

The public office holders champion only the kind of projects that will enrich them. And those projects are usually the least among what the society needs. By allotting data to teachers, a certain company, probably established by political cabals, will make a huge profit.

But is the data for teachers, among the top ten needs of the educational sector? Teachers that hardly concentrate on their teaching job, due to delayed and insufficient salaries. Teachers that may not own a good smart phone for internet browsing. Teachers that are due for retirement and are not familiar with the internet because of old age, but are retained in office by corruption. Teachers that lack good office facility and necessary classroom tools. Teachers that share dilapidated buildings with kids in the name of classrooms. Teachers that are not dully promoted. Between teachers and students or pupils, who need the data most. Think about it, these are not exclusively lecturers. What kind of research does a teacher in primary or secondary school need to do before he or she will be able to teach?

Okay, if the data is so important, why not provide free WiFi for schools, which is cheaper and better.

Someone might claim that it is a good development because life is step-by-step. But I want whoever reasons that way to know that giving data to teachers is like a father who uses his money to buy an exotic car while his kids are not properly taken care of.

Even Npower can not sustained the monthly 200mb given to less than 200 000 beneficiaries more than a year, so I wonder how Mr. Adamu and NCC is going to do this our teachers should get ready for another APC scam

Teachers thay may not even have electricity at home to charge their devices . Teachers that may not have internet-enabled phones due to poor salaries . What kind of 1g data will they be given? Is it the mtn, glo, airtel or 9mobile 1g that won't last a week even with very low usage?Why not provide free wifi in schools if they are so bent on the data-policy because students may also need it for research.

When you talk about data you are talking about what South Africa Botswana and Kenya used to use in 1995 to 1996 .
