Must you eat rice? Make your native soup with plenty meat, fish and eat it with your favourite swallow. We must learn to encourage local food sufficiency, job creation and live within our means.

Simple, the border closure is because of rice

You sign #AfCFTA, and then close your border, and then "completely" close the border.

All the while, ignoring that you've lost the ability (for years now), to effectively police the borders.

if you want to ban a commodity, you have to factor in the demand of the commodity and how much your people rely on it. You don't go and ban importation of Rice when the indigenous farmers don't have the necessary quantity demanded by the nationals. There should have been a timeframe before such is implemented

We go learn by force. Hardship will go round.

All these advanced countries pass through this same hardship but Nigerians don't want to suffer...Japan doesn't have any natural resources but they are far ahead....we need to be self sufficient....all the things we should have done in the past is now catching up with us...

Don't compare organized countries with us. We are still battling nepotism, corruption, tribalism etc. It takes a unified country to develop a nation. We are no nation. Buhari has been in power since 2015, all your president had to was to subsidize agricultural import products to farmers, let rice farmers begin planting as early as 2017, then give a date like 2019 as a time for rice importation ban. By then, you would have gotten the desired metric tones the feed the population.

This is a welcome development. With this, in about 6 months, no one will be thinking if foreign Rice again as we should have been self sufficient in Rice production.

Even if we are nit yet, we will eat alternatives

do you know that foreign rice smuggling has increased more than before? Why is foreign rice still in the market? Benin rep will never sign the agreement not to export rice into Nigeria because now they are even exporting more. Who is fooling who?

No Sensible Investor will invest in an unpromising venture, the easy influx of foriegn rice is discouraging potential investors.
Now with the provision of Grants and soft loans to farmers and the increase in demand for rice, local rice milling and production now look promising.
Beside, if a country with a population of 200 million can't feed itself then we have a problem.

AfCYA is for goods made or produced by member states. The rest of your post is typical of that of a smuggler.

If the points listed here is the main reasons why boarder is been closed this is very good. but how are we sure the law enforcement will not take advantage of this to engaged themselves in smuggling and enrich themselves. How does presidency monitor this exercise of boarder closing? ?

Why I believe that rice smuggling from Benin rep can never stop is that the who is who in both Nigeria and Benin are the real actors in it. Foreign rice is still in the market 2 month after border closure and the rice will still be available for ever because that's the strength of Benin rep. What I wish government can do is to allow full duty like yar"dua era. This time make the duty as high as 60%. While any smuggler caught should be made to pay 120% of duty.

All these advanced countries pass through this same hardship but Nigerians don't want to suffer...Japan doesn't have any natural resources but they are far ahead....we need to be self sufficient....all the things we should have done in the past is now catching up with us...

Which advanced nation passed thru this hardship? Was there a time Japan closed their borders?

China had a policy like this under Mao. Millions died and millions more fell into abject poverty.

What happened next? Deng Xiaoping came and opened the Chinese market to international trade. What happened next will shock us.

According to the World Bank, more than 850 million people have lifted themselves out of extreme poverty as China's poverty rate fell from 88 percent in 1981 to 0.7 percent in 2015.

Nigerians should please google how Deng Xiaoping did it. Read up on economics, google how other nations did theirs. Please don't allow serpents deceive you into believing that this border blockage is good.

Nigerian businessmen also export goods to Ecowas Community and these businesses pay tax. Ecowas trade is worth $300 bn annually.

my client ginger enroute to Mali has rotten in Seme border worth millions. So many importers and exporters borrowed money from the bank to do business now the banks are on their neck because no one knows when the border will be opened or some their goods have gotten spoilt. These people have staff that they pay salaries, they pay tax, they pay duty.

Sir...in the 18/19th century Japan was isolated...it's European countries and America that forced them to open up so as to have market for their products...you can't compare a totalitarian regime to a democracy....Nigeria can't get to that point which China got to...we can't keep importing every and anything...it doesn't even make sense...did government stop them from exporting?

EXACTLY!!!!!!!!!!

Also people from other Ecowas nations come to Balogun, Computer Village, Trade Fair, etc to buy goods and transport by road.

Watch as importers will start diverting some of their containers meant for Nigeria to Ghana and it'll affect our govt revenue. We're losing manufacturers to Ghana and now we're about to lose importers to Ghana.
