PerfectlyPerfect:

Every country on earth imports one food item or the other. The government is banning importation when the local production isn't enough to satisfy the population. That's the highest class of foolishness. They're supposed to ban when local production is equal to or above local consumption, that's how smart countries do
Imagine Nigeria importing fresh tomatoes, besides how can we grow when we import more than we produce.

Man, any nation of Nigeria's size that has problem feeding its population has a big problem.

Does the closure extend to the northern borders? Because the last time I checked there were two Nigeria when it comes to laws.

There's a Nigeria where FRSC and police do not mount road blocks to collect toll, and neither does custom ask for duty for cars that are already within the hinterland.

And then there's a Nigeria where laws must be enforced and heavy taxations imposed.

The North continues to feed fat and oppress the south for as long as the south doesn't speak with one voice and we have some misguided Southerners shouting "Afonja" and "Biafra" on nairaland.

Smuggled Foreign rice is a major threat to the local rice production, and it scares investors aways now investors have assurances and government backing.

You sound so funny. There are better ways to go about that. So, we will wait till investors are ready and everyone starts farming. Don't be sentimental with your thinking. look at it critically and access. People will die, business will shut down and after everything investors will run. Why do you think countries don't use such approach? It doesn't ends well. you will see that he is still going to back out and numerous would have loss badly. Wait and see

Local product should take over
Unfortunately Nigerians love foreign product

Doesn't your president love foreign goods?
Where does he take treatment?
Where did his wife just come from now for a medical treatment?
Where did his children school?
If it were possible, Yusuff would have done foreign NYSC.

Buhari feels foreign things are good for him and his family only while he suffers Nigerians with bans on foreign goods and make things more expensive and scarce.

What exactly are they aiming to achieve??

Can someone tell these people you don't ban food importation at the end of farming season, you are supposed to do it at the beginning of the year so farmers will know what crops to cultivate.

What do I know, none of these men knows the real cost of goods in the market, all they do is sit around and make useless policies. This is going to be the worse xmas ever.
Things go cost eh

So how do we encourage investors to come in? Is it by opening our borders to cheap smuggled rice?
Did you just say other countries don't use such approach, Japan placed high tariffs on imported rice decades ago and still maintaining it despite the harassment from the US, Switzerland still maintains high tariffs on some of their food imports, the EU did theirs by stylishly putting regulations on packaging of food from outside, the US has increased its tariffs on certain goods into the country in order to protect their manufacturers and several other countries, this step by the FG is long overdue

You guys just don't want to understand anything, nothing was banned and you can still import rice through our ports and pay the normal tariffs to the government but you cannot smuggle it in after paying the tariffs to the Benin rep government and moreover the FG wants Nigeria to be self sufficient in rice production

How about refined petro.
We have it here but still import it why not place a ban on imported petro to force us to repair our refinery.
The system is keep them this way and the pp won't fight back (hunger) in the land

Can someone analyze how the closure of borders will benefit me as an individual?
Cos all I see is inflation and famine.

May I remind you the rationale for this very closure of borders? Its is almost solely to curb the issue of smuggling..... not just staple foods but everything....up from car spare parts down to your okirika clothes. We all know how exorbitant it is to clear container from the customs point due to high import duties and recalcitrant briberies. Now that aside!!

Closure of the bordering gates to curb smuggling analytically means all or most of the smuggled products come through those gates
Now this should be the logic
1. smuggling is corruption (unarguable)
2. All smuggled commodities come through the border (very arguable)
Closure of border will curb/reduce smuggling...........fine
Mitigation of corruption at the borders will curb/reduce smuggling.........fine
Since smuggling is a function of corruption in the borders (S=f(c)) Why not tackle corruption at the borders instead of subjecting the common man to more hardship without putting in place any form of ''shock-absorber''
When America wanted to boost their local steel production value that importation had almost crippled, you know what they did? they didnt even halt the importation, rather they lifted taxes on the local ores and placed huge taxes on the imported. Diplomatically, the market tilted to the side of the local steel production. Now this is how policies from informed set of parliaments look like.
I have always said this, until Nigeria starts to run the government&police like a corporate organisation(bottom-up approach), where KPIs(key performance indicators) are reviewed, operations externally audited with impending sanctions for code of conducts breachers, only then the government can function.
You've been shouting farming, need I remind you that locally made rice as a case study is always double the price of the imported. Now the imported has been banned, you think the prices of local rice would go down? Check your law of supply!!! Anyways thanks God fake/non-durable aba made clothings will be glorified atlast cos nobody go fit afford the original which import duties go don almost choke to death. So poor rats will be poorer cos aba made will now be more expensive once the demand increases.

Government did the right thing for sure but it was poorly strategized and for the wrong cause!!!
Anyways, Orun nyabo, kon shoro enikan (IF sky dey fall, na all of us head e go knack)
Body go teh u!!

This is Nigeria! The 200m people are useless! If they cannot grow enough food to eat despite huge availability of land, water, air, SUN then let them DIE of hunger! Awon oloriburuku people!

No, the FG has been preparing and setting things in motion for this period, because how come Cosharis finished his Rice milling plant the same period the border was closed.
Many Nigerians never thought it would get to this stage. Many thought it was an empty threat. The Gov't is so committed to this course.

Did Nigeria ban importation of rice outrightly? NO! Get your facts right and stop being ignorant and stupid. The government says import your foreign rice through the ports and pay your duties. The government says don't bring rice through land borders or smuggle it through land borders, ok? Learn!

Actually, u are a funny one, the war is against smuggled foreign rice because rice entering through ports can be controlled but majority of Nigerians preferred to smuggle through land border at lower cost.
And its Official that Nigeria is trying to reduce our imports and food is more easier to produce locally than refined petroleum products.

Because no sane government would have done such. Let me make something clear to you. If high tarrif is being introduced on imported rice and no tarrif on local production, the citzens will choose what is best for them. With that businesses will adjust and lane defined. Now, people goods are being left to rotten, huge debt recorded etc. Things don't work this way

Smugglers don't pay tariffs to Nigerian Gov't brother, they only pay settlements(bribes).
This case is personal Benin Rep. charges low tarriffs on those goods at their ports and those goods finds their way into Nigerian Markets destabilizing our economy.
