June 12 Annulment Will Haunt Me For The Rest Of My Life – IBB by Ecstasy154(m): 7:15pm On Oct 19, 2019
Despite the clever and seemingly unrepentant comments by former military president Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida (IBB), over his annulment of the June 12, 1993 presidential election which was won by Late Chief MKO Abiola, the former military ruler has told his sons, Muhammad and his brother, Aminu, that the action will haunt him all through his life.

According to Muhammad, a security consultant, his father must have been compelled by some external forces to take the decision, adding that IBB told them that the particular action “is something that will haunt me for the rest of my life.”

In an interview with the Sun, Muhammad, said, “Like June 12, we all understood that it would be one of the biggest things that would remain as something that would haunt us for the rest of our lives.

“We understand that. But I am sure deep down, my dad would have passed on the mantle of leadership to his friend. There is no doubt about that.

“Yes. Like he said to me when I encountered him [IBB on the issue]. I said: why did you do this? He said, ‘Well, it’s part of governance that you don’t understand’ as a young boy at that time.

“So, to me, mistakes have happened, (what matters) is how you rise above those mistakes. We have learnt as a country.

“There have been tremendous benefits for some group of people who benefitted from that mistake, who are in the helm of affairs currently today.

“Because it was from that, that you saw the Southwest become so strong and is now developed to a point whereby their leader was able to create a bloc for the region where most of his protégés were in leadership positions at that time. And these were people who benefitted from the annulment of June 12.

“So, there was always the positive side of that annulment which gave rise to what we are saying today. In as much as it was a painful experience, the nation has, I think, grown out of that by now; and we have mended fences from that hurt.
“The president now has been able to recognize the family, he has been able to cool the tempers, and we hope from that, we should just be able to move on. That is just my position.

“I didn’t challenge him. He came to us, me and my brother, Aminu.

“Yes. We were at the (Aso Rock Presidential) Villa at the time. We were in the living room when he had done the recording.

“He came and he said, ‘I just annulled June 12.’ We both looked at each other and we looked at him, and said: why would you do that? And he said ‘you are too young to understand the intrigues of governance.’

“And we said, but it is about you and your administration. And he said, ‘well, perhaps, this is something that will haunt me for the rest of my life.’

“So, you could see that his hands were tied. He was limited. He couldn’t do what he would have wished to do. And this is probably a story most Nigerians don’t know.”

And the hysteria and pandemonium that followed caused millions of Nigerian relocating to their respective states of origin for fear of an impending war.

I still remember vividly all the trvails and trauma of that annulment. #AbiolaRace #OsoAbiola.

This is a backdoor approach to sneak into politics. There can never be anything positive about June 12, from Yoruba standpoint or Nigerian standpoint.

The fallout brought Abacha into power. Is there any Nigerian that will say Abacha was a positive value to this nation?

The Babangidas are afraid of Yoruba political dynasty gaining power in 2023.

This would not be Obasanjo, it would not be an ex-military with code of military fraternity. A pure Yoruba political brand backed by Afenifere!

Ibb was the figure head...Abacha effectively became Nigeria's president in 1990 after the failed Gideon okar coup.

He didn't want Abiola and he made it clear to ibb...ibb didn't listen until it was too late and IBB didn't just step aside, he was forced out by his co-president Abacha.

It was Abacha who annulled June 12 not ibb. Abacha and IBB were the first and only co-4 star generals in Nigeria's history

Is it possible to have two commander in chiefs

Anytime i see a book about june 12 i can read it like 5times Because its really surprised me how wickedness this man called ibb . You conducted the most peaceful and fair election in the history of our country and you went ahead by canceled it.up till today Nigeria never had peaceful and fair election like 1993 presidential election.

IBB should have stood his ground and damn the consequences.
The annulment of the Jun-12 election is a great disservice to IBB's legacy and memory. It robbed him of his deserved position in Nigeria's history.

Babangida's hands was forced because it's to his advantage!!!

If the situation on ground was the other way round, he would have eliminated those who suggested it!!!

Killing MKO was not enough, you killed his wife as well

So don't come and sell us this cock and bull story simply because one leg is in the grave and you his children are trying to straighten your paths politically

God is just and can not be bribed or removed!!! You will all get what is due to you at the right time!!!

lol...it is not easy to make demands during a coup. Ibb had two options

1. Cancel the elections and step aside or

2. get arrested by his juniors and spend an unknown amount of time in jail.

He chose self preservation.
