Talk is cheap mr Bagamoyo port. , Lamu Port will be the largest deep sea port with the highest transshipment capability in the East Coast of Africa - and already berth 1 is ready and 2 more will be ready before end of year.

What hell is this smiley smiley smiley - can you give us magnifying glasses so we can see Lekki deep sea port please. Nigerian started talking about it 10-20yrs ago and there is absolutely zero progress. Meanwhile our Lamu deep sea port is ready for business. Mombasa has already overtaken Lagos Port Complex of Tincab-Appapa - and construction to expand it continues - and we just started on Dongo Kundu Free Port with EPZ in Mombasa.

That is a white elephant. You don't just build a port without having a demand for it. Ethiopia is out of it,South Sudan has almost nothing to export,so who else will use Lamu port instead of Mombasa which is more accessible? Does northern Kenya produces anything big to deserve such a port?

It a transshipment port - so rather than big ships wasting crucial hours in your lethargic ports - they will dock in Lamu deep sea port (it can handle largest panamax ships) - and offload to smaller ships - which will leisurely offload in Dar Port.

Mombasa has not overtaken Lagos first off second off lekki deep seaport was mentioned only seven years ago but they only started construction February last year that picture us from January today they have finished the 1.5km long breakwater and they are going to start the construction of the actual container port now

The first berth will come in Q2 2020 and when fully completed in 2025 it will be able to handle over 6 million TEUs making it the largest and deepest seaport in sub Sahara Africa

Japanase throws 1.5B dollars investment in Mombasa including Dongo Kundu Special Economic Zone. This will be ready in 2023 and will provide 100K jobs.

Mombasa port have overtaken Lagos port complex in cargo throughput. I think Lagos is down to 1.2M TEUS a year while Mombasa is doing 1.3M TEUS (about 33m metric tonnes). Mombasa does twice Dar Port. Durban does 2.7M.

As for Lekki deap seaport - it will not see the light of the day without FUNDING. And that can only happen when oil price goes back to 100 dollars (never going to happen).Lekki was suppose to be operation last year - but construction is yet to start.

Now LAMU already knocked down 3 out of 32 berths - built in record 2-3yrs.

We are a country that values long distance driving. On that you need a beast with a tank capacity of not less than 90 litres. Not forgetting you can't just use any type of car when driving inside national parks or reserves or when patrolling arid and militia infested areas bordering South Sudan, Southern Ethiopia and Somalia !

You also go for durability or capability when buying a car!

samorobo:

Yes that is because of the nature of your roads..it is so rugged

It is being funded by a Chinese company just like yours I did some research your is funded by a bank in South Africa and a private Chinese company your government has no stake in it

But ours it 80% funded by a private Chinese and British l company and 20% by the nigerian government and the government still has the calabar and bakasi deep seaports outside of Lagos so the congestion problem won't happen again

They are also spending 1.6 billion dollar to have a rail connection for the project so all is well for this one we will see it through and it will be successful

And I see you chose to use the Nigerian government thing of building SEZ (Special Economic Zones) it originated in China but Nigeria was the first one to use it in Africa

But yours are so small enyimba economic city will create 750 000 jobs for the people of the south east Centenary city 500 000 jobs lekki free trade zone will create 1.5 million jobs whilst yours is creating a mere 100 000 please do not try and push above your weight

Dar port is small baby - it does half Mombasa - and Mombasa is also being expanded by japanase - and the japanse are crossing over to build Dongo Kundu, a bridge over Likoni - and another bridge in Mwache - these are huge bridges - the whole area Japanase are spending 1.5B dollars. That is how to play smart - not borrow commercial loan from South African bank and fund huge infrastructure project. You already spend 50% of your budget to service debt. And you are pilling commercial loans - and yet you're LDC & HIPC that would qualify for cheaper loans. Kenyans we don't qualify for WB/IMF cheap loans but we are playing smart - getting concessional loans from Chinese and Japanese - and ADB - which is why despite having 60 billion dollars in loan - we are spending 30% of our budget to service debt - the commercial component of the loan is small - most of loan are long tenured - and others just public guarantees.

LAMU will do transshipment for now - targeting all the small ports including dar - dar is not a DEEP SEA port (understand that first). LAMU as deep sea port will be able to handle super post-panamax ships.

And then when Turkana oil is shipped - we will use it as oil terminal. Uganda choose Tanga and they are crying as we finish designing the pipeline and will make FID (FInal Investment Decision) soon with Tullow & Total...we just need 1.5B dollars.
