So, my first experience with Mercedes Benz is the MB 190E of my Dad back in the late '90s -2000s.
After then, it has been my car, first a 199-1994 Toyota Corolla, Kia Shuma, Honda Civic etc.
Some days ago, a neighbour needed to by a "clean" Nigerian Used 2002-2006 Mercedes Benz C Class and being more experienced than him, we set out to check out the ones for sale.
First was a Mercedes Benz C230 Kompressor (the brainbox is attached just beside the Engine). This one has a Turbo (Kompressor) but after gathering information here on Nairaland, I advised him not to buy it but go for a V6 model (C240- 2.6LV6, C280 - 3.0V6, C320- 3.2V6).
We saw a 2004 C230 but before we went back, someone bought it.
Now, we have seen a C240(I had seen it earlier and took days to ask questions and the Mechanic is open enough to tell me the issues with that particular car - lower control arm, A/C not working, engine oil shorting though not smoking, two back shocks getting weak, several faults in the dash- ABS, Etc. The car just tells you what is wrong with it without scan. The car moves fine and the gear selects well.
I told my neighbor what he has to spend to bring the machine back to standard, but for now, what he must fix when he buys the car is to change the four tires and probably oil servicing.
I tell you, Mercedes Benz should not be compared with other cars because they are in a class of its self. The cornering, balance, "movement"- though C240 is underpowered unlike the C320s, comfort, A/C (their A/C na cold room and cools faster than most cars), and on.
I asked the prices of the parts, which lasts thrice than average parts of other car brands but expensive.
Here are my findings of the prices of the parts of 2002 Mercedes Benz C240 (prices may diver from where you live):
Engine - 120,000 (" skeleton " or half-and-top costs about 90,000) Gear - 70,000 Lower control arm …8,000 2 front shock absorbers - 24000 2 back shock absorbers - 12,000 Front and back brake changes - 7,000
Give and take, he would spend about 250,000 Naira to fix all the car's wahala (new engine, eventually, etc) and the owner is offering it at 1million Naira (asking price).
Oil- Manufacturer recommends Mobil 1 but my customer who uses 2007 C230 uses Total Quartz 7000
Pls, is there anything else he should look out for before he makes payment. Left to the guy, anything "Benz" just de push am but I told him to consider many factors before buying a car. |
