Unfortunately for you the Benin empire was visited by litterate people as far back as the 15th century (1400's). And the they made maps and wrote texts describing the region.

Guess what, Benin Kingdom was an empire. And it's capital is Benin city.
The Olu of Warri admitted his Benin roots when the Oba of Benin came to his palace, the Oba of Lagos admitted his Benin roots and so many others did.
