mrvitalis: As simple as that. Our farmers don't have the technology needed to be competitive. The major reason why foreign rice from India and Thailand is cheaper is because they adopted better technology in the rice value chain. If the government wants to help the farmers, they should import better technologies and give them to the farmers. You can't close down the borders because you want to help local farmers at the expense of local consumers 4 Likes |

I think Nigeria border closure is right too, to checkmate d illegal smuggling of things. But nigeria government need to put price tags on our own local rice... because will can’t buy our own rice at 19000 naira, that is much. Govt need to put a fix price tag now before December ooo Dozzywest: |

Most of those who are in support of the closure are BMC.Even the op.Most of the seized imported goods will end up in customs personnel houses. It will thrive corruption among border officials.Don't be fool.Politicians don't patronize local goods. You see them and their children at spar and shop rite shopping for foreign commodities. 3 Likes 1 Share |

SincereBigot:We are always good to find the "good" bad examples. Like saying why do people die alot in Nigeria, a quick Nigerian will be like people die in the US too. That's not right totally! What am saying is that, border control is better than border closure. In the first place, customs were created for the purpose of the former. Why was there massive porosity in our border management on land? Why do 254 fully loaded tanker filled with subsidized PMS or with other petroleum product leave our custom manned land borders daily*? Are they sleeping? If you know much about custom service, you're free to find out, you will know that the corruption within customs and other agencies manning our land borders shd be focused on and we shouldn't blame our ineptitude on neighboring countries. 1 Like |

It will really help the economy of Nigeria to grow big and strong if only the federal government should now support the NIGERIA farmer and every other business by making loan accessable and also making the business environment to be conducive for them to operate. There shouldn't be strict policy for the business owners as well. With this, Nigeria economy will grow big and strong. 1 Like |

netpro: Trumps wall isn't d same thing as closing d US/Mexico border. There is a fence built across d length of d US/Mexico border. D fence is meant to deter migrants from crossing into d US illegally. Trumps plan is turn that fence into a wall. There are two types of border entries. Legal border points of entry& illegal border points of entry. Every border has a checkpoint which screens who is leaving d country and coming in. D border checkpoint which is d legal point of entry. It has nothing to do with Trumps wall. What buhari did was to close all Nigeria's land legal points of entry. 2 Likes 2 Shares |

You talk as if all borders are closed. The ones really closed are those regularly used by the Nyamiri and Yoruba. Just like money laundering is an offense for some while the Alhajis are making fortune from bureau De change. When you know you know. We have one Nation and three sets of laws and privileges, that is what I think. 3 Likes |

yahussaini: But have you asked the reasons why Nigerians prefer to go through Benin rather than Nigerian ports. Because it is always easy to identify problems but a lot harder to solve them. Why can't the Nigerian government create the same trading environment that prevails in Benin Republic to hijack the lofty revenues you claim hey earn. I mean there is no way in this world that goods that snake their way through Benin should be competitive based on logistics alone. It must mean we are doing something very wrong administratively here that Benin is doing better. So it doesn't serve us right to put a band aid on the bleeding without investigating what is causing it. We need surgery in Nigerias administrative structure that makes doing business much more people centric rather than government directed and driven only. I tell you this. If we donot reform we will just be creating a smuggler's paradise just as we did in the 80's with the essesntial commodities import restrictions and overnight billionaires some of whom ironically are leading industrialists today. Just like in medicine you can only claim success in treatment where the blockage of the blood flow comes after the surgery. Yes, I agree that sometimes you have to apply the blockage (bandage) to prevent blood loss that leads to death but you donot do that and send the patient on his way home. Deep injury requires deep investigation ans deep repair. Why do our people prefer trade across our borders to trade across our ports and trade across our federating states. How do we get some or all of the revenue that accrues to Benin for instance. 1 Like |

yahussaini: Thank you for the big English you have written up there but it does not go to the root of the problem. The question that you should be answering is WHY importers prefer to ship their goods meant to Nigeria to Benin first and then smuggle them into the country? Be it used cars, rice, used clothes etc duty paid in Benin is much cheaper hence the preference to berth their goods there. So why doesn't the government cut down the duty paid at our borders to make it economically unviable for an importer to ship goods to Benin when same are meant for Nigeria? Instead we choose to close the land borders? Are our customs officers not at the borders? What then is their job if they are unable to effectively Police our borders? Everyday we talk about millions of litres of fuel imported for the Nigerian people being diverted to neighbouring countries and that with the closure of the borders daily demand for fuel has dropped by 8 million litres so why has this diversion been happening right under the noses of the customs if they are not complicit in the smuggling activities themselves. Finally back to the rice issue.... In case you don't know, with the border closure rice is now scarce not just foreign rice but local rice. Both have gone up in the market by over 50%! What steps are government taking to ensure local rice is not just sufficiently produced to meet domestic demand but at cheaper prices than foreign substitutes? Can we close our land borders forever? 1 Like 1 Share |

SincereBigot: D US already has a fence that runs d length of d US border because a lot of migrants use it as a point of entry into d US. Trumps plan is to fortify that fence with a wall. Meanwhile, trump didn't close d US/Mexico border. There is a legal point of entry which is a checkpoint like a toll gate that screens those going and coming. Even at that, a lot of people still attempt and in rare cases successfully smuggle things in and out of d US. Pls understand d place of d trump wall & what buhari did. They aren't d same thing |

Mac2016:i think the government is trying to find out why hence the need for the closure.. we cannot totally eradicate corruption from the customs.. the best thing the government can do is find newer methods to reduce the smuggling of important commodities like the PMS you earlier mentioned.. but if i may ask you, what exactly are we missing out by closing the land borders? I am a farmer please enlighten me i am open to learning |
