It is not rocket science. Nigeria is a big market cause of her population.

That is not the issue, the issue is because our borders are so porous that even a prostitutes womanliness is tighter than our borders. Nigeria should be making Billions on import duties and taxes, but when it goes through the porous borders we lose money......the question is for how long are we going to continue losing Billions to illegal imports...India and Thailand can send their goods through the ports, no wahala, the funny thing is that smaller West African Nations are bringing rice from Asia for Nigerians to eat, and they make Billions from it while we suffer, naaaa that is foolish economic transaction.

A bag of imported Rice sells for 15k and local rice sells for 12k before the border closure ..After the closure the local rice the poor masses are meant to buy sell for as high 18k and the imported now sales for 25k..Please what is the gain of the Poor Masses in the border closure

The masses can cultivate rice on even one plot, and get enough rice from that plot in 3 months to feed for 2 years.

We should stop this nonsense we are doing: enriching countries like India and Thailand.

If Nigeria had boycotted MTN during the xenophobic attacks, that company would have lost half its revenues.

How i so wished that we could look deep into our local contents and give them a face lift. We have all it takes to leverage on this recent turnout: minister of Agriculture should take action and get better Rice seeds for our farmers, local farmers at all levels should be encouraged with enough finance massively and also monitored to ensure proper utilisation of this fund. Nigeria should'nt just be best known on only religous matters, we can up our game as a nation if we really want_ God bless Nigeria.

if I am making millions then I won't be here complaining closing borders to promote our own has advantage and disadvantages we are too many in this country and our Agricultural sector is poor we can't depend only on local rice to feed the whole country even countries that produce also import and it also depends on the quality of the quality isn't good nobody will buy and again the price if the price of local rice is expensive nobody will purchase and if we close borders other countries will do the same I watch CNBC NIGERIA and some Nigerian businesses home and abroad in countries like Ghana are beginning to feel the effects of the closure sooner or later it's gonna hit us hard

There's nothing wrong in importing rice and chicken if the fundamentals calls for it.

Does Nigeria have comparative advantage in rice production? Capital no. That is why rice can be imported into Benin Republic, transported all the way to Niger Republic, smuggled into Nigeria and profits are still made. Production has never been Nigeria's problem but the lack of comparative advantage.

The British tried to encourage local farmers to plant rice but they were unenthusiastic. Their preference were cocoa, palm oil, rubber and so on. Those were the areas Nigeria had comparative advantage in then and the farmers and the country flourished and the country still hacks back to those days.

It has been estimated that Nigeria can earn as much as $2b just from exporting sheabutter alone. Snails if fully developed can earn as much as $2b. Thailand gets as much as $1.8b a year from farmed shrimp. The country is neglecting what it is good at and pouring resources where it sucks at.

You do best in what you're good in and fare badly in what you're bad at.

Plenty producers will have to innovate and improve on there Rice quality and pricing to attract customers

If this border closure is sustained for like two years it will help in enhancing the rice value chain process and also attract new business men into it. The multiplier effect in the long run is that it will lead to creation of jobs for our teeming unemployed youths. If not for The tough posture of Buhari, people like Cosmas Maduka wouldn't have delved into the processing aspect of the rice value chain. Also heard Dangote is building his processing mill.

RE U SAYING U HAVE BEEN MAKING MILLIONS FROM THE OPENED BORDER..

I don’t that’s what alphastyle is saying..the Nigerian system is not anywhere near good yet....while the boarder closure is good...it’s a fire brigade approach the local farmers are seizing opportunity to exploit the masses...local substandard rice wasn’t even this expensive before boarder closure....
I just wish the government will do more than close boarders. These countries that produce and export rice to africa have invested heavily in GEnetically modified foods, that’s why they can meet demands of bothe local and exports demands....food business is serious business..
the government is doing very little to help local farmers to make more produce to meet the demand of our pple...
Rice is our major food....I just hope we can cope..we need more from government other than closing boarders..

Much as it is a good move, I think the media in Nigeria is exaggerating the border closure saga.

This was how Lai Mohammed said that Thailand agric industry was struggling because Nigeria started producing rice locally.

And their ambassador to Nigeria debunked the claims the next day.

The media should do more of investigative journalism to unravel why many institutions are dormant in Nigeria instead of spreading silly lies

Nigeria’s border closure is hitting hard on India, Thailand others

The rice exporting countries are heavily reliant on the Nigerian market

Reports say the wholesale price of top exporting countries fell on product glut resulting from a decline in exports

A report by Business Day indicates that the closure of Nigeria’s land borders aimed at curbing smuggling activities, especially of rice, has taken a toll on rice-exporting countries. According to the report, the price of the commodity dipped by a joint 46 percent in one month in countries like Thailand and India. President Muhammadu Buhari had on Wednesday, August 21, ordered the closure of the Seme border.

Between that period and September, the wholesale price of the broken parboiled rice, the species in top exporting countries fell on product glut resulting from a decline in exports. In India, the wholesale price dropped from $0.64/kg in August to $0.40/kg as at 30 September of this year. In Thailand, the price of the commodity declined by 9.2 percent in the review period. Data from both Thailand and India, which previously accounted for up to 90 percent of Nigeria’s rice imports, show legal imports to the country have declined at the same time. Meanwhile, there are fears that Nigerians may buy a 50kg bag of rice for as high as N50,000 in December 2019 if the land borders remain shut by the federal government. Already, the price of rice by 86% to an all-time high of N27,000 per 50kg from N14,500, an indication that local rice farmers do not currently have the capacity to meet local demand in the country.

The federal government had only "successfully" implemented a sub set of a multi facet plan

In economics ,import restrictions poloicies are implemented for a wide reasons
I.e
*to curb smuggling
*to safe the economy from becoming a dumping ground
*to show political power (I.e USA vs China)

Using Nigeria as a case study

*Nigeria land borders are porous
*The economy is largely commodity driven
*Heavily reliant on Import (import driven)
*The Large population is an assured market for any goods that find its way inside

The Nigeria Government "thought" it good to close the border to achieve stability, econimuc growth ,local production and save some "fdx"

Good on the note stated

The cons thereby arise
Before (total)shutting the borders

The local content need be define
What is the capacity?
If the local capacity is low, what is/are the incentives to boost them?
What are the paliatives available for the masses,to cushion the hard on effect?

The economic policy as of now cant be said to be "expansionary" it is still largely "contractionary"

Import restriction (good)but to what end
Vat increase (unreasonable)
Monetary review policy(tax on deposit and withdrawal)

Strict adherence to medium and long term economic objectives as laid down by previous government can't even be worse as this

Hard times

Things are falling widely apart

Keep quiet.

Buhari didn't shut down the borders to compel Nigerians to produce goods locally.

He did it to stop smuggling.

This is no policy; it's a happenstance!

Get that into your thick, empty skull
