The Attack that Escalated US-China's Tension In December 2018, when the US accused China of spying on US officials and stealing their technology, it was actually fueled by an alleged Chinese attack on the Marriot Hotel Network. Marriot as a group inherited a problem from acquiring the Starwood hotel chain. Starwood hotel has been hacked earlier in 2014. The attack made Marriot lose over 383 million users to hackers. Although, the figure originally stood at about 500 million user data. The data includes names, addresses, credit card details, itineraries, and other private details. The loss of the data caused outrages over the world. Many people became worried as to why the hotel chain didn't do enough to secure their data. The UK reportedly slapped a £100m (about $126) fine on Mariot for exposing user data and for violating the EU's GDRP. Experts who studied the event traced the attack to Chinese hackers. There have been opinions that the hack was done with the aid of the Chinese government who are looking for ways to track and censor its citizens. The United States has since banned a Chinese major smartphone manufacturer and IT firm, Huawei from doing business in the United States. This increased the tension between China and the US, something that could lead to a global economic collapse as early as 2020.

The Hack that Cost Over $500m In 2011, Mt. Gox suffered a devastating attack when they lost over 850,000 bitcoins. The Bitcoins were worth over $500m then. Today the Bitcoin will be worth $6.48b. The hack forced Mt. Gox to become insolvent. Since Bitcoin is an anonymous peer-to-peer payment exchange, the perpetrators were hard to trace. Even to this day, they have not been traced. In March 2019, some leaked documents showed that Mt. Gox is ready to pay back creditors after the monumental loss. The hack raises a question like "how safe is anonymity?"

The Cyberattack Against Estonia Would the next World War be a series of Cyberattacks? This was a question people asked during the cyberattacks that crippled Estonia in 2007. The Cyberattack happened during a period when Estonian and Russian authorities were involved in the dispute over the relocation of the Bronze Soldier of Tallinn. The attackers launched attacks on banks, parliament buildings, and other critical infrastructures. There was also a deliberate attempt to hijack news articles and features during the attack. The citizens were also not spared as many were victims of DDoS. Although the Russian government claimed innocence of the affair, all pointers lead to Moscow. Nashi a group backed by the Russian top government claimed responsibilities for it. But the Kremlin never agreed that they were involved in it. The aftermath of the event led Estonia to secure its cyberspace.

Sony Playstation Network Hack that Exposed Millions of Personal Data In 2011, Sony Playstation Network was hit with a series of attacks that forced the PSN to go offline for a while. Till today, the extent of the damage is unknown even though the House of Reps slammed Sony for reacting slow to the attack. There are estimates that the number of users that their data were compromised run into the tens of millions but no one is sure. Sony only released an official apology but never revealed the rate of the damage. In a way to make up for it, Sony gave members of PSN two free games and some other goodies. No one knows who did it. No group has come up to say that they are responsible for the attack. At first, Sony fingered the Anonymous group but they quickly denied saying "This time, we didn't do it". The attack gave birth to the #psndown hashtag. This hashtag has been used by rival fans of XBOX to mock PSN users who were denied access during the period when it went offline. 1 Like

NASA and US Department of Defense Would you believe that NASA and the US DoD could be hacked? Well believe whatever you want but it doesn't end there. The story gets messier. In 1999, a 15-year-old boy hacked into NASA computers and even accessed the United States' Department of Defense computers. Although the loss in cost wasn't much, it's the greatest ambition of any hacker to be able to break past an American Military computer. Jonathan James did this. A self-taught computer programmer, James later committed suicide but that's a story for another day. The hack forced NASA to shut down its computer and even rewrite a part of its source code for the code that was already compromised. The attack cost NASA about $1.7m and the shutting of its computer cost it a further $41,000 dollars.
