I chuckled. 'Sorry, I didn't. You didn't tell me you need prayers.' 'We all do,' he said. 'Specifically, I need prayers that God should touch the heart of the lady I want to marry so that she will say yes, and the wedding can be in earnest.' I felt like laughing. 'I see.' 'Is that all you will say?' I paused briefly. 'For now, yes.' 'Well, thanks for being candid.' 'Thanks for calling,' I told him. The conversation went on for another minute before he terminated it. The following day was Monday. By noon, I got a surprise visit from a lady who introduced herself as Anita. 'Mr. Tayo sent me to deliver this parcel to you,' she said. A parcel from Tayo? I collected it and thanked her. In my office, I carefully opened the package, wondering what was inside. I didn't wonder for long. There was a set of diamond-studded rings, a box of 18 carat gold Raymond Weil wrist watch for female, Oil of Olay soap and body cream, and Nina Ricci perfume. I had no doubt that these exotic items were expensive. Did he have to do this? Could this buy affection, especially genuine one? Well, not that I didn't like them. I don't think any right thinking lady would reject these. All the same, I wondered if I would genuinely fall in love with him as a result of this. But then, I remembered what Tina used to say: it was better a lady went for the man that was crazy about her, than going for the man she was crazy about. I picked my phone to call him and to thank him for his generosity. 'Don't mention, Simi darling. You are a Princess and you deserve more than that.' 'Many thanks to you,' I repeated. 'It's okay. Yes, I will be coming around to pay you a visit this office.' 'There's no problem whatsoever with that,' I replied, smiling. 'I look forward to seeing you.' 'Okay, dear. See you then.' I was thinking of how to entertain him when he would come around when I had another call again. This time around, from an unknown number. 'Hello,' I said into the mouthpiece. 'Hello,' the caller said. 'Am I speaking with Simi?' 'Yes, please. Who's talking?' 'The name is Kate. I'm Tayo's fiancée. I want to let you know that he is engaged and you should leave him alone. Leave Tayo alone and look for your own man.' I was too stunned to say a word. Tayo was already engaged? But he never told me that! And this lady that was calling, how did she get to know my number? 'O... Okay, I've heard you,' I stuttered in reply. 'It's not just about hearing me,' the seemingly belligerent lady fired back. 'It's about you leaving him alone and not having anything to do with him again. Listen, and listen good. I know the hotel where you work and I'm monitoring you. If you don't want any trouble, just leave him alone and go and look for your own man.' With that, she cut the line. This was serious. If there was something I hated, it was receiving threats. It was even more annoying if the threats were related to fighting over lovers. I thought of what to do. The lady who called herself Kate said she was monitoring me, how true was this? In any case, I decided that the earlier Tayo was intimated with this fact, the better. So, I picked up my phone to call his number. After the third ring, the phone was picked up at the other end. 'Hello,’ I said. ‘But, Tayo, why didn’t you tell me you were already engaged? Why did you have to subject me to ridicule?’ ‘You’ve not seen any ridicule yet,’ a voice fired back. I was astounded and had to quickly check the number I had dialed. There was no mistake the fact that it was Tayo’s line. ‘So, you still have the gut to call his number after I’ve warned you. Can’t you see that you’re shameless?’ It was the voice of Kate. She was the one raving on the phone; on Tayo’s line. But how did she get hold of his number/phone? Why was she the one that picked his call? I was not good in making verbal assaults, or exchanging tantrums, so I cut off the connection. Phew! This was serious. How come Kate was the one that picked Tayo’s call? I shrugged. Obviously, I would have to wait for developments to unravel the knotty circumstance. Part of the unraveling came some hours later when Tayo visited my office. ‘Now, what kind of drama d’you think you’re playing?’ I challenged him, barely allowing him to sit down. ‘Drama? Do I look like a playwright?’ He laughed briefly but when he saw my stern countenance, he stopped. ‘Simi, darling, what’re you talking about?’ ‘You have a lot of queries to answer,’ I said heatedly. ‘First, why didn’t you tell me you were engaged? Two, why did you give her my number? Three, why didn’t you pick up your call?’ He looked as if I had bashed him with a bang. ‘Wait a minute. Are you saying Kate called you?’ ‘Yes. Why didn’t you tell me about her? What kind of game is this you’re playing?’ ‘Oh, my God. So, it was Kate that took my phone. How could she do that?’ I stared at him, numbed. ‘Simi, please, listen to me. First and foremost, I’m sorry I didn’t tell you about Kate. She was my ex-fiancée. We parted ways some months ago. She and Joyce, my sister, are friends and they visited my office this afternoon. There was a time I briefly left them in the office to ease myself. That must be the time Kate took the phone. It was much later after they had gone that I realized the phone was missing. I couldn’t figure out how I had misplaced it. I could not have imagined that Kate would take it. I left her and Joyce in the office just briefly. How could Kate do this?’ His explanation seemed a bit plausible, so I simmered down a bit. ‘I’m so sorry for all the embarrassment she might have caused you.’ I still played the victim. ‘Embarrassment? It was more than that. She threatened to deal with me if I don’t leave you alone. She accused me of trying to snatch you away from her.’ ‘Oh, Simi, my darling. I’m so sorry for all these. Please, pardon me for not telling you about her before now. Kate is a highly temperamental lady, one of the reasons why I severed the relationship. But it’s like she has not got over the reality of parting ways with her. I’ll surely compensate you for all these troubles.’ ‘And the threats she made. What about all those threats?’ He tried to smile it off. 'Are you really sure I'm safe with this your ex-fiancée?' I probed. 'Please, I don't have the mind of trouble.' His explanation seemed a bit plausible, so I simmered down a bit. ‘I’m so sorry for eall the embarrassment she might have caused you.’ I still played the victim. 'Please, I don't have the mind of trouble.' Tayo had to assure and reassure me that there was no cause for alarm. ‘There’s no cause for alarm, my dear. She’s only bluffing. There’s nothing he can do. You’re mine and I’m yours. No one can take that fact away.’ ‘Ah, please o, I don’t want any trouble. If the love between you and your Kate is still strong, please, I’m ready to step aside. I don’t want trouble.’ He smiled to reassure again. ‘There won’t be any trouble. Don’t make yourself distressed over nothing. As I said, Kate was only bluffing. The only thing that baffles me is why my own sister will be colluding with her on this matter. But, you don’t worry, my dear.’ I tried to believe him and to be rest assured that there was nothing to worry about. ‘Kate is not only bad tempered, she’s also a thief. How else can one explain the fact that she took my phone without my knowledge? Please, Simi, don’t be angry.’ I shrugged. ‘It’s alright.’ Some minutes after Tayo left, Tina came in. I had not seen her since the day she told me about the Abuja senators. Somehow, I was glad to see her again. ‘Hey, Tina baby, good to see you again,’ I gushed. ‘Ah, my dear Simi, good to see you too.’ We hugged briefly. ‘Oh, Simi, you’re really missed out. If you see the way those Senators spent money, you would be dazzled. It was such a fun-filling time.’ ‘I see,’ I replied. I had decided that I would not be swayed by whatever she enthused about her experience. ‘Ah, those guys know how to spend money. Honestly, Simi, I wished you were there.’ I shook my head . ‘Honestly, I believe it’s good I didn’t go. Tina, for anything like this, my answer will be no.’ ‘Na you sabi. But don’t be jealous when my sports convertible car arrives.’ I smiled. I was certain I would never be jealous, although I didn’t tell her so. After some time, I decided to tell her about the incident of Kate and the infamous phone call. ‘Are you sure this Tayo guy is not deceiving you? All these men cannot be trusted, you know.’ 'Well, he has assured me that there's no cause for alarm,' I said. 'Don't so much depend on him,' she said. 'A man like that cannot be relied upon at all. It is better you have another man standing by.' I smiled at her suggestion, although I knew she wasn't far from the truth. But it turned out that I had nothing to fear about Kate. A week after her call, I didn't hear a thing from her again. This emboldened me to say yes to Tayo's proposition. 'Oh, Simi, darling. This is a good thing you have done. I can assure you that you will never regret this.' From the moment I finally said yes to him, I noticed a complete change in his attitude. The first noticeable change was when he handed his ATM card to me. 'You can withdraw any amount of money from it and use it for shopping.’ I was wide-eyed in surprise. 'You don't mean it, Tayo.' 'I do.' He grinned. 'It's all for my darling wife-to-be.' He went on to tell me the pin number. I was glad about the gesture. It seemed I was beginning to have good luck with men of magnanimity. I remembered Mola gave me a car which I hardly used. Now, Tayo was showing large-heartedness too. It was in the evening that Tayo gave me the card. I promised to make good use of it the following day, which was Saturday. The schedule of duty showed that I would be on duty in the afternoon. After my bath in the morning, I went to the nearest bank to check the account balance. Whatever was there would largely determine what I would buy and how much I would spend. The account balance was more than five millions. Wow, so Tayo had that much in one account! Good, that meant I had a lot to buy. I withdrew the maximum I could withdraw that day and took a cab to Ikeja for the shopping. I bought some clothes and ladies accessories. But at the back of my mind, I wanted to be modest in my spending. I wasn't the greedy type and I didn't want to abuse the privilege he had given me. I therefore returned the card to him. 'Are you sure you've used it to your satisfaction?' he asked. 'I want you to buy all that you can buy.' I smiled pleasantly at him. 'I'm okay for now. Next time I need more things to buy, I will let you know.' 'Okay.' A couple of hours later, after he left, he called my line. 'Hello, why didn't you spend any money?' he asked. 'I spent some,' I pointed out. 'All together, I withdrew about four hundred thousand naira.' 'That's not much. You should have taken much more that.' 'As I said, I'm okay for now.' He laughed over the line. 'Alright, but please let me know when you need to make new purchases.'
