IamAnderson: Hi, I noticed, Roscoe's cage is close to the frontal fence, does he bark or get scared when people are passing by on the outside, I heard once, if you want your dog to be aggressive to strangers you have to put his cage at the back of the cage so he doesn't get used to the noise and feel free when strangers are around |
Re: Diary of my Caucasian Roscoe by vincentjk(m): 12:27pm On Oct 29, 2019 |
Terrorboy: Maybe true but a dog with good guard instincts would guard your house even if he sleeps outside everyday |
Re: Diary of my Caucasian Roscoe by IamAnderson(m): 1:38pm On Oct 29, 2019 |
Terrorboy:personally I feel a good guard dog will bark at strangers no matter how frequently he hears noises. he can differentiate between random outside noise and noise coming from people at the gate. people can discuss and even play and pass the road in front of my gate but he won't bark except they make an unusual noise, once someone actually comes to the gate and stops there, even before they knock, he'll bark at them and run there. even if he's inside the house, he can tell when a stranger is in the compound. I've heard about the whole backyard cage thing but I don't believe it makes a guard dog, in fact dogs that were brought up like that usually bark at any small noise and movement when they are free which I feel isn't a pleasant thing at least since he's used to random background noises I'm sure if he's barking then it's something I have to come and check out. although when he was younger he used to bark anyhow, with time he started differentiating noises. now he knows the sound of our car horn and engine , before you reach the gate with the car he's already there waiting unlike if it's a random car, that one he'll just ignore it. he knows the sounds to ignore and the ones that should concern him, the whole backyard thing just makes your dog nervous and anxious to sounds, if you want your dog not to be scared of strange sounds then desensitization is the best way to tackle it not locking them away from it. if your dog is a guard dog, whether you lock it up at the backyard, front or inside your house he'll bark at an intruder when he spots one. |

IamAnderson: You've written well, I personally prefer letting my dogs loose anytime am home As in looking at them locked up inside that cage doesn't make me feel good at all unless we've a visitor |
Re: Diary of my Caucasian Roscoe by IamAnderson(m): 3:06pm On Oct 29, 2019 |
vincentjk:exactly, Roscoe is always free except we have a visitor. |
Re: Diary of my Caucasian Roscoe by space9880: 4:24pm On Oct 30, 2019 |
vincentjk:I don't leave my dog even when I'm around I live in a compound with people I trust him but I don't trust them I only leave him at night and he started a bad behavior of eating stones he can finish one full block over night so I've stopped letting him out at all except I'm outside but when I'm going in he goes in too |

locking him inside won't stop the pica syndrome and it can be dangerous for him |

Re: Diary of my Caucasian Roscoe by agboedeh: 11:56pm On Oct 30, 2019 |

try exercising him more often under close supervision. U could also get hard(durable) toys for him to chew on inorder to divert his attention. If u are d type that yell at ur dog, try to stop it in order to prevent anxiety and depression. Proper socialisation is required, it help prevent unnecessary nervousness, anxiety and attention seeking behaviour. Go to ur vet to prescribe medicines just incase the cause is not psychological. The problem might even be lack of nutrients.... if u don't mind me asking, wat is ur current feeding plan like? |
Re: Diary of my Caucasian Roscoe by space9880: 6:51am On Nov 02, 2019 |
agboedeh:physical exercise is not a problem I tire him out almost everyday, I have balls we use to play fetch but I don't leave it with him his jaws are strong and can pop almost anything, he is well socialised and behave well in public, he stays inside my house so I don't know the kind of attention he is looking for maybe it's psychological I don't know I used to feed binggo in the morning , JoJo in the afternoon , restaurant food at night but I switched to only booster now for about 2 months, I stopped giving bullymax too I'll start giving him again.

vincentjk:you're right bro my German Shepherd death is still a mystery to me I'm not pointing fingers but I suspect foul play. |
Re: Diary of my Caucasian Roscoe by space9880: 6:56am On Nov 02, 2019 |
IamAnderson:formerly used to give gorilla Max, switched to bully Max now I give nothing . I lock him inside to prevent eating more stones |
Re: Diary of my Caucasian Roscoe by agboedeh: 8:49am On Nov 02, 2019 |
space9880:So his nutrition is fine.... I'll advice u to go to the vet. My former gsd had such a thing which was diagnosed by my vet. He would try to put anything in his mouth including paper , his own poo, stone etc. He later died due to a nerve problem. Go to ur vet before he swallows anything that can affect his digestive system |
Re: Diary of my Caucasian Roscoe by IamAnderson(m): 9:09am On Nov 02, 2019 |
agboedeh:my previous dog had this same problem, he ate his own poop, vomit, grass, sand, stones e.t.c he also died some months later |
