benardj3: you should have soaked it in water for 12-15 hours before planting, this helps to aid the germination more faster |

okoroemeka: Been a while here. I don't know how you'll do it, but the kind of weeds you'll have with this your quantity of manure eh. I hope you'll be able to cope with it, Sir. I farm on a little above half a plot. Applied manure before planting to the ridges, and apply two big paint buckets of soaked manure every week (soak them for about 3 days as you taught me). Haven't used any of the Chemical fertilizers I bought. The major issue now is weed control, the weeds are even growing faster then the cukes, and filling everywhere |

Yampotatocarrot:the ace we have up our sleeves is that we planned the farm far ahead,we ridged the land and it has been Left for one month now for weed seeds to germinate and grow,we will spray herbicide 3days before we plant, by then all the small weed seeds must have germinated, after spraying that size of weeds with herbicides it will take close to 40-60days before you see weeds again,by then you must have smiled to the bank several times, the land is big and manual weeding is not an option. 2 Likes |

It's good you have access to a bore hole, but if you're going to water the plants by hand, then think carefully about whether you should do more ridges than the ones I can see in your photo. I suggest you start small. Watering cucumber plants by hand every day during the dry season no be joke o. |
Re: 500,000 Naira From One Plot Of Land In 90 Days. by Wizs2019: 10:02am On Oct 27, 2019 |
Wizs2019: My people! Been awhile. So a brief update on the current cucumber season, thus far we have 260 bags from the approximately 3 plots. I give glory to God. We are hopeful of another 40 bags. We have been harvesting for over 4 weeks so the plants are starting to wilt. But omo mehn this is the most difficult planting season ever! Constant rain for weeks, really heavy downpour. It is a miracle the plants survived for this long. People associate rain with DM but I didn't have problem with DM as it only started appearing in the last week or so. The main issues were lack of bees and insects for pollination, reduced uptake of nutrients, reduced care of plants (workers cannot work in rain) and over saturation of water in soil. All issues are due to heavy sustained downpour. Then with the heavy rain comes bad road so even transporting harvest to market was a problem as well. However, one thing that was beneficial from the rain was that everyone else was also having the same issues so any goods taking to the market was sold at premium price. The initial target of 500 bags is no longer possible, we still made more than 100% ROI so I am not complaining. God is good! Bros Emeka, I would recommend using some fertiliser with the manure you have sourced. It will give the plants a huge boost. I am able to harvest over a 100 bags from CU999 on a plot so there is no reason why you can't also. Look at my post from a few months ago for example fertilisers you can use, amount to use and when to use. Also since our oga seems to want to become more reasonable, what was suggested is aligned with the information I provided and if he doesn't agree, he is free to comment without insults please. Happy Sunday! 4 Likes |

no retreat,no surrender,we are installing drip irrigation and also applying organic manure in readiness for planting, the target must be reached even possibly surpassed by any means necessary but thank God using hose and standing for hours is out of the equation,at least we will utilize such time better in crop management

Re: 500,000 Naira From One Plot Of Land In 90 Days. by okoroemeka(m): 9:17pm On Oct 29, 2019 |
lahify:we still have our thinking caps on whether to plant one or two crops per hole,if we plant 1 per hole we will have 3200 crops but if we plant 2 per hole we will get 6400,we have adequate quantity of organic manure that we can afford to use 2 kg per hole if it comes to that, but there are other things to consider like ventilation, space stress etc,but the simple truth is that 6400 crops will yield at least 30-40% more than 3200 crops, the drip tape has dual emitters that will supply 8ltrs of water per hour to each hole so irrigation is also covered,do we go for good agricultural practice and give correct spacing of 30cm and harvest less or do we cram 2 crops per 30cm and definitely harvest more, which one will it be,dry season is coming and DM issues will minimal, which way do we take!!! |

Re: 500,000 Naira From One Plot Of Land In 90 Days. by nxtEinsten: 11:11am On Oct 30, 2019 |
Just to add my 2 cents to your thoughts; as you will be using drip, the risk of Downy mildew is further reduced as it cannot be readily spread on d farm via water splashing. however, ventilation is also key. A compromise in your situation would be planting 2 seeds in every other hole. I.e. 2 seeds and d next hole one seed. that might give u a population of 4800 and I believe might still give u a yield of at least 30% or 40% more. Goodluck in your endeavors okoroemeka: 1 Like 1 Share |

Re: 500,000 Naira From One Plot Of Land In 90 Days. by Wizs2019: 5:33pm On Oct 30, 2019 |
Functionoftime: That's the problem my brother. I can't so the care/nutrients available to the plants is significantly reduced. Excess water in the soil reduces the oxygen in the soil so the roots of the plants start to rot which in turn kills the plants. Bottom line, too much water is no good. Which is why I am praising God for what I was able to achieve. 3 Likes |

okoroemeka: Bros, If I were you, I would have just created one long planting "line" instead of the individual planting holes you have because you are losing a lot of planting space with the way you have it now. If you have a planting "line", what I would recommend is to plant with 20cm spacing instead of the 1 hole 1 seed then next hole 2 seed. I don't think it is smart to plant 2 seeds in the same spot, the plants with just get reduced amount of nutrients because they are occupying the same soil area. That's my 2 kobo. 1 Like 1 Share |

You are absolutely correct bro. 20cm-23cm would be the best spacing for optimum population. The problem is with the drip spacing which is at 30cm so it predetermines your intra row planting distance and hence your overall population. Pls if you have a solution/resolution to the above issue or know where one can get drip lines with that spacing, kindly let me know. Personally, I will always hesitate to plant 2 seeds (placed together) per hole, I will still space them slightly apart on both sides of the emitter so that same emitter can feed them both but there will still be a spacing of about 6-10cm between them depending on your drip rate. I Duff my hat's to both @okoroemeka and @wizs2019; learnt a lot from you guys. Thank you Wizs2019: |
Re: 500,000 Naira From One Plot Of Land In 90 Days. by okoroemeka(m): 12:08pm On Oct 31, 2019 |
ok,this morning we brought out our measuring tape and staked out 20cm to see how it will look, from what I am seeing 20cm will do the job comfortably, some crops will miss the emitting point but we ran a small pilot drip on one ridge and found out that within minutes the whole furrow is already saturated with water so the crops will definitely get water regardlessly of the placing,so for our 1000 meter drip we will see a plant density of 5000 crops give or take.

Re: 500,000 Naira From One Plot Of Land In 90 Days. by okoroemeka(m): 5:48pm On Oct 31, 2019 |
we did a test run of a section of the drip system to see the possibility of irrigating crops that are not planted close to the emitters and within 20 minutes the result was clear the whole furrow was completely saturated with water,so regardless of were ever we plant it will be irrigated so long as it is in the furrow.first pic is 10 minutes into operation and 2nd pic is 20 minutes, this 8ltr per hour drip will be a time and power saver.

Re: 500,000 Naira From One Plot Of Land In 90 Days. by okoroemeka(m): 8:53pm On Oct 31, 2019 |
Psalm4kute:very interesting question,I think the use of drip irrigation will increase both yield and lifespan of cukes due to this few factors,(1)water is available to crops at all times,if you try to use hose and water 2000 cucumbers at 2pm hot afternoon in February you will understand,(2)water is delivered slowly not the high pressure hose that can even dislodge crop roots(3) fertigation possible (4)you can increase or decrease the water rate depends on weather, the list goes on, even the free time you will have will be invested in productive endeavors in the farm,if you are not a rugged individual don't ever consider using hose and water pump during dry season it is meant for farmers with sheer unbreakable determination. 1 Like |
