Why Is There A Senseless Fear And Dislike For Guys With Dreadlocks In Nigeria? by africandictator(m): 9:25pm On Oct 31, 2019 |
Hello Nairalanders, I have been searching for reasons why most Nigerians have a phobia and dislike for boys and men with dreadlocks and I can’t find any credible reason. Their reasons are senseless and baseless, most Nigerians tend to vilify boys and men with dreadlocks because for some people, dreads hairstyle doers can be very terrifying and they are adjudged to be criminals which is not always true. In this part, I think it is a crime for a man to pursue happiness.. Nigerians have failed to take into consideration the dynamism in fashion because I wondered why the dread hairstyles where not present in the days of our fathers but the Afro hairstyle was appreciated and considered responsible during that era. Our ethical compass as a nation have been destroyed because in recent times we have seen people under the guise of sheep and heavenly clothing commit grievous crimes. Nigerian Parents who have lost their youths should allow the current youth to live theirs. fashion is dynamic and dreads are natural and beautiful... In fact dreads are africanlike, because they defined our appearance and blackness during ancient times as they added to our aesthetic value. Nairalanders! let us begin to accept people with dreadlocks and see them as civil and normal citizens.. stop the stereotyping.. 25 Likes 4 Shares

Personally I didn't like people with dreadlocks because they all look like they have a little mental issue and what's surprising is that a lot of Nigerians think this too. Most mad people carry dreadlocks and some that didn't have at first, will eventually grow it in the long run, so you won't blame me. But I've come to realize that they're not what we think afterall. 2. Movies: movies always love to portray dreadlock guys esp Nollywood as either madmen, irresponsible or wayward. Even majority of the bad guys on Hollywood are always black people on one form of dread or another. Although I like the new shorter fashion dreadlocks common nowadays (been thinking of doing one), I still haven't gotten over this creepy feeling of putting my hands in a dreadlock! I don't think, I ever will or can 68 Likes 3 Shares |

Pls I didn't judge..you can clearly see where I wrote that they are not who we percieve them to be..I've mingled with a few of them, to know that the stereotype is a lie 1 Like |

Even in Jamaica which popularised it it has a bad reputation Its not to my personal taste but I dont think people who have them are automatically bad. The same goes for tattoos or piercings You just reminded me of a lady I saw this morning with loc'ed hair...all the dreads were unform size, parted neatly... In fact I stopped walking just to look at them, they must have been the cleanest, neatest dreads I have ever seen The dislike stems from the belief that people who wear them are irresponsible. And the spiritual connotation of "dada" doesnt really help either I should think its a mixture of superstition and narrow-mindedness about what is "acceptable" 43 Likes 1 Share |

midnighter:wow but dreads did not originate in Jamaica.. the origin of dreadlocks can be traced to the Middle East (Nazareth’s) and Africa Ethiopians and west Africans.. including Egyptians. And yes some dreads can be really neat and attractive. Jamaicans do not detest dreadlocks, infact they have ministers and mayors with dreadlocks! 37 Likes 4 Shares |

africandictator: Excuse me, you are right. What I meant was where the recent "revival" started They do not all detest dreadlocks but general society disapproves of it. It isnt really regarded well with them, if somebody like a minister wears it then they are doing it to make a statement. Dreadlocks are kind of a sign of being razz for them. If they see you with it they will mentally put you in a particular category the same way most people here look down on tattoos They are moving towards accepting it but a lot of schools and professions will not allow it 10 Likes 1 Share |

Example Mayokun... does that young man looks inviting with that dread... he looks like a zombie... The truth is even around the civilised world not many is a fan of dread... it is not just a Nigerian thing... The only thing that bail you out of people accepting your dreaded hairstyle is when you have an identity. Nothing more. You keep dread say na fashion rubbish jor... many look very unkept with it and have no one to tell them the truth. I haven't come accross handy men that looks really great on a dreaded hairstyle so far... they most times look rough or unimaginable specie. Please if you want to keep dread Just have an outstanding Identity... so we can look at you from that angle. And not mind that thing you have on your head. Call it hypocrisy... It lives in every man. My opinion! 21 Likes 3 Shares |
