I had always wanted to study Nursing in school and be called a nurse,...but as God would have it, higher institution flinged me to Microbiology... currently in my finals and I pray labour market favours me and make me work in the hospital laboratory whereby I will still be referred to as Nurse Abimbola grin

I wanted to be an Engineer though my dad, a German trained Metallurgical Engineer ( possibly the first in Naija) preferred Medicine and Engineering as 2nd choice. I ended up doing Physics( u know Naija and the way universities dish out courses) , I plan doing Nursing later though.....anyway, Naija seems to be a dream killer land somewhat.

Just curious, what gender??

My earliest ambitious was to become a doctor, my dad wanted my brothers & I to become doctors and since I wanted to save lives and make an impact, it was a good fit.
When I realised that I really didn't like the sight of blood; my next dream was to be an astronaut and go to space (I had always wanted to do that, even before the MBBS), the Nigerian factor didn't let that happen but I still can go to space when SpaceX allows people to pay to go to space. That's actually my life's mission RN; to have enough money to afford it.

Briefly I wanted to be a pilot because I felt it would prepare me for the astronaut gig and also because an aunt told me I looked like a pilot.. lols.. I was pretty young then.

I became an Economist and I'm pretty damn proud that i did, in the right position and with the right policies I could make more impact on the lives of Nigerians than any single doctor ever could and also make a lot of money in the process

I'm about to start a MSC in finance and economics. To be honest at the moment, making money is my primary goal, touching lives isn't exactly on the agenda, thought I try when I can.

I wanted to be a soccer star but mumsy was having none of that. Later, I wanted to be a mathematician or a physicist but mumsy no gree. I remember my mum saying in anger "if it's not a medical course, count me out. What will you use Maths and Physics to do after school?" I yielded to this pressure and chose MBBS. Luckily for me, I got MBBS and I don't regret it. Just yesterday, mumsy was telling me "Don't force your children to do any course" and I nearly said "look who is talking." Thank goodness I didn't say it. grin

That's not true. Until we take responsibilities for our mistakes and actions, we won't achieve our dreams.

Your dreams weren't killed by Nigeria in anyway. You followed the bandwagon of "i want to enter school". Then the higher instituion took advantage of that by providing lesser options for desperate kids like you seeking admission.

Some of you then will be deceiving yourselves that you will change course once in 200 or 300 level back to the original one. I keep advising people not to be in a hurry accepting anyhow admission just because you want to go to University.

Instead of an engineering aspiring student to take up Physics as course in University for example, I always advise them to follow the route of Polytechnics instead, get the actual engineering course there than to say I must go to UNILAG or UNIBEN and study Fishery abi na Physics education. Then tomorrow them go dey catch witch or say Nigeria dey change dreams......taaa!

Medicine and Surgery
The dream of most Nigeria parent. Till date I haven't seen anything special in the profession that should warrant parent forcing there children to study it, maybe for the prestige or my son is a doctor.
Some parent excuse would even be because those Dr are too proud.

I had always dream of been a lawyer to the extend that during my junior secondary school days I was nickname "Youngest barrister"
The day I knew it was a dream was when I told my dad I want to buy constitution (Nigeria).

I will never force any of my child to study any course, the best I will do is advise
I urge other parent to also do so.
