From what i have read so far, this border closure would lead to more job loses,a lot of business would fold thereby causing more poverty and hardship in the land. And for a country which according to the world bank is the poverty capital of the world.I don't think this is a very wise thing to do right now no matter how good the intention is.

I once said that the closure of these borders is not a properly thought idea, but some ignorant entities were ranting up and down.

Rice is not the only commodity that passes through a border. There are a lot of genuine business that passes through the land border.

If you are importing or exporting to some of the west African countries, it's easier and more cost effective to use the land boarders than the sea port.

Imagine a man exporting textiles to Ghana from Kano, how possibly will he do that through the sea port in APAPA?

I am totally against rice smuggling but the government should have come up with smarter ideas to deal with this issue, and not shutting down the whole boarder.

Presently I have about two trailers of hides and skin from Mali parked at the boarder incurring bills, with high possibility of spoiling within the shortest period of time because of its present condition.

How do I import from Mali to Nigeria through the seaport?

It is only those that does not understand what happens at the land boarders that are jumping up and down.

Once again I reiterate my stance against smuggling rice through the boarders, but we have to be more tactical in handling certain issues as regards to our economy.

This boarder issue in Nigeria is like a fly perching on a man's scrotal sack, you have to apply wisdom in dealing with it, if not you may end up hurting yourself terribly bad if you hit it with great force.
The timing of the border closure is bad, but the idea is good. Those products you are importing from Mali are they made in Mali? Probably a foreign company produces it in Mali with Nigeria market as mail target. That's the issue the gorverment is trying to solve. Let the companies come and Establish in Nigeria and create jobs for our people.

like I said anybody with a brain would be thinking why are we importing 3trilllion worth of textiles ($10B) and exporting jobs abroad when we have textile mills shut down and unemployed Nigerians....same with rice. For some context our entire income from Oil is not up to $30B.

You can argue with yourself from now till tommorow, Nigerians are corrupt, corrupt people will always find themselves into banks, civil service, police, army customs etc and sabotage well meaning directions. Someyimes the only way to deal with the corrupt people that are we Nigerians is to be draconian.

Like I said anyone with a brain who means well for Nigeria should at this moment be wondering why we are importing so much textiles through the land borders especially when our numerous textile mills are shut down and our youths are unemployed

Something particularly wrong with Africans. You use extreme measures to handle moderate issues.
Worst case scenario, smugglers will become more creative. Other West African nations will adapt, we would be alienated.

Nigerians will suffer more from the border closure. Someone with sense should tell Buhari the truth. Border closure is not all about rice importation.

What a country!!

The way you go about criticizing this border closure, it seems you are badly affected.

Well, all I care about is that Buhari should fix power if he wants to keep the borders closed.

The vitriol you keep pouring out tells me something... You are either a contraband importer or you make money from importation and your source of livelihood has been cut off.

Border closure is good for Nigeria,at least for now.

To imagine that customs went to town celebrating that they made 3 billion daily by shutting the border. Why not get smart scanners and search for arms and rice instead of shutting down the whole economy of West Africa?

This crude approach have no place in a modern society. This is counter productive both in the short, medium and long terms.

Closing the borders for import can be understood, but locking it down to also prevent exportation is what I don't understand. I thought the FG have been trying to encourage us to go into exportation so we can earn some foreign exchange inflow and strenghten the naira.
Who is advising Buhari abeg?
Nigerian exporters should use the seaports for now till those leeching countries sought themselves out

How many sea ports do you have? What will be the impact if everyone that needs to export and import goes to the seaport(s) mentioned? What would be the going of going to the seaport if you are doing business in another part of the country that shares a land border directly with your customer?

Guys, you need to actually breathe and think things through.
The reason your youths dont have jobs in your non-existent textile industry is that your governments successively, have not put in the right resources and infrastructure in place. There is no power supply for the textile mills, no roads / rail to transport the raw materials and products, policy flipflops discourage investors coming in.....

Think sir.....think.

isthatso:

if you had a brain and somebody is telling you he is losing 3 trillion naira from imported textiles, when we had a thriving textile industry in the north and our youths are now jobless, you will figure out that this is an opportunity to revive our textile industry and put our youths to work.

your youth are unemployed because the jobs from all the closed textile mills in Nigeria have been exported abroad and you are there saying they should open border? if the business in legitimate why dont they use the sea port?

......but maybe you dont
