The timing of the border closure is bad, but the idea is good. Those products you are importing from Mali are they made in Mali? Probably a foreign company produces it in Mali with Nigeria market as mail target. That's the issue the gorverment is trying to solve. Let the companies come and Establish in Nigeria and create jobs for our people.
established your company in Nigeria and run generator for 12 hours daily.....lol is that not madness?

I once said that the closure of these borders is not a properly thought idea, but some ignorant entities were ranting up and down.

Rice is not the only commodity that passes through a border. There are a lot of genuine business that passes through the land border.

If you are importing or exporting to some of the west African countries, it's easier and more cost effective to use the land boarders than the sea port.

Imagine a man exporting textiles to Ghana from Kano, how possibly will he do that through the sea port in APAPA?

I am totally against rice smuggling but the government should have come up with smarter ideas to deal with this issue, and not shutting down the whole boarder.

Presently I have about two trailers of hides and skin from Mali parked at the boarder incurring bills, with high possibility of spoiling within the shortest period of time because of its present condition.

How do I import from Mali to Nigeria through the seaport?

It is only those that does not understand what happens at the land boarders that are jumping up and down.

Once again I reiterate my stance against smuggling rice through the boarders, but we have to be more tactical in handling certain issues as regards to our economy.

This boarder issue in Nigeria is like a fly perching on a man's scrotal sack, you have to apply wisdom in dealing with it, if not you may end up hurting yourself terribly bad if you hit it with great force.

What a life of pains? I'm sure you're a roadside economist not to know that every business looks to minimise cost and maximise gain. Mumu thinks transferring cost is like ABC without realising that increase in cost leads to reduced demand and even substitution of products.

Not only 3 trillion, it's 75 trillion

Awon olobe cheesy

They should tell me how possible is it that there is a 3trillion industry somewhere in Nigeria that we are not aware of.

They first claimed the border in north is flourishing, while only the southern borders are closed in order to pitch the south against the north.

As soon as they realized that is likely not to work, they are now claiming the once flourishing border in the north is all of a sudden locked up.

As a result, some imaginary business men are at the risk of losing billions of imaginary dollars

May God bless you. If Textile industry can boast of 3trillion in just one quarter what stops them from using such huge money to revive the textile industry.

Now i understand, after collecting bailout money from government, the same money was diverted into importation of textile materials.

Where is the sense of patriotism of Nigerian business men. They prefer to import good when they have resources to produce the good within Nigeria. Just like our politicians will steal Nigeria money only to transfer their stolen money abroad to boost such country at the expense of Nigeria

India's textile industry that employs 45 million people is worth 108 billion dollars annually.

UK textile industry is worth 9.1 billion pounds, employing about 100k people.

Some idiot wants us to believe 3 trillion Naira = 6 billion pounds worth of goods are at risk over 1 quarter in a year.

You're acting dumb now. Instead of just saying what contraband they are importing you start rambling to next topic. Lol you do realize legitimate business happens at land borders. You president is opening then in January.

You're question is irrelevant to the point I made. The textile mills shut down because they weren't competitive. Smuggling is just one factor, along with power and material cost (cotton). Like most protectionist clowns you dont want ask why the textile mills cost were so high compared to asia. If these other factors were addressed the mills would have survived without so much government support.

Readily available raw materials like cotton, for the production of textiles had become a problem. Nigerian farmers were experiencing lower yields of cotton and could not access improved variants like the disease and pest-resistant, high yielding biotechnology cotton. Petrochemical products such as the dyes, polymer and other synthetic materials being produced in Nigeria, were also not readily available. Inadequate power supply had also become a problem, resulting in higher costs of producing Nigerian textiles as power supply accounts of 45 percent of the production costs.
