The NFF is just as guilty as many of our indigenous coaches. When they refuse to pay coaches, smuggle in their own ‘boys’, refuse to release money on time for camping, encourage the rot in our leagues, etc., they are contributing to the problems we are dealing with in our football. Their hands are not clean so they cannot even demand accountability or relieve coaches of their jobs.

All in all, we may have been champions of many things in the past, but that does not mean that other nations will not eventually catch up with us at some point. The fact that we refuse to invest in our league is not helping us, we cannot continue to rely on Europe to develop our talent. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, we must fix our league. Many of these boys seemed to be lacking the basics...there were too many misplaced passes, missed shots, defensive errors, etc. and they are all in academies. If our clubs invest in academies we will probably not be having problems with the basics.

As a country we need to do some serious reflection. There are many issues we need to address but it seems like we are not ready to ask questions. Manu and co should be probed on the issue of bribe taking and player selection, Aigbogun should be sacked, Imama should be replaced but who will do all these things? The same people who cannot deny that they smuggled a top DSS official’s son into camp (the case was dropped btw)? Or the ones who did not release money for camping on time?

Let's borrow a leaf from Netherlands. if the team has only one abroad born player it should be because that's the best team possible. if the best we can have is dominated by 90% abroad born players then so be it. We should always be about presenting our best. Sentiments kill progress. We should be blind to where a player is born etc. We are in a globalized world, there is no such thing as a true Nigerian, or being more NIgerian than someone else. Thumbs up. Unfortunately, one will never ever see Chief Icons put it straightforward and blunt like this. He'll always play diplomatic with the truth. And talk about having hope blah blah blah. And he thinks this country will move forward.

All you said is on point, however as regards that first paragraph, when you have a Foreign coach he will hardly permit all that. Any interference will be met with stiff resistance and he will not allow you dribble him as regards his salary. And if things get to a head he will gently leave the job. Honestly, they're just better organized.

Local Coaches will only succeed when they become principled and disciplined enough to QUIT when the NFF or any higher body interferes.

Etim was a revelation in that match. He offered width in attack with his pace and was never burned throughout the match.

The problem with the team is simple. We didn't come with that big fast striker. Look at the past teams, 2013 had Isaac Success and Osimhen and 2015 had Osimhen. If Ibrahim Sai'd had any of these strikers they would have scored no less than 10 goals by now. This side creates the chances but didn't have a point man to finish.

I think that we might have been particularly looking for smaller statured players with the hope that they would pass the MRI because I can't for the life of me understand why we have such a small team.

I agree with you. Part of the problem imo is that local coaches do not seek to develop themselves, so for many of them national team jobs become a do or die affair; once they get there they have no plans to leave so they suck up to the NFF.

The only way to eradicate the problem is to encourage our coaches to improve themselves and our young people/former players to go into coaching. If they obtain licenses, and have the courage to try coaching at different levels within and outside Nigeria, we will have quality coaches who do not need national team jobs to survive.

Sir Icon4s May have a different perspective but I’m sure he only wants what is best for our national teams.

Well, it is not confirmed yet. I only saw the news on Soccernet. On other news outlets, there are calls for Manu Garba's sack.

Honestly, Manu should be sacked. He messed this team up big time and I insist he had it that good in 2013 because of Amuneke. Amuneke spotted the best bulk of those players back in 2013 and he did the same by himself in 2015 and raised two WC winning sides and gave us super talents serving the Super Eagles today.

Amuneke was once a certified scout for Manchester Utd and is a FIFA Pro-licenced coach. He is way above Manu Garba.

Alhassan Yusuf has been rewarded with the Player of the Year in Goteborg after a remarkable breakthrough season as more awards beckon.

The award was by Goteburg Post.

26 games, two goals and two assists. There you have hard facts about the Nigerian big talent’s all-Swedish breakthrough season.

From his position as a central midfielder, Alhassan Yusuf during the all-Swedish season 2019 has sprung and squeezed opponents like Helsingborg, AIK, Hammarby and Malmö FF.

In the final against Östersunds FK at Gamla Ullevi, the 19-year-old midfielder was crowned the season with two goals and an assist.

– The best match of the year for me. It’s been a very good season for me, the first one where I’ve started matches. My breakthrough, says Alhassan Yusuf.

In competition with players from five elite clubs – IFK Gothenburg, BK Häcken, Örgryte IS, Gais and Göteborg FC – the running midfielder takes home the prize as this year’s football player in Gothenburg.

“I’m really happy about this. There are many good players and big clubs in Gothenburg, so that’s something I’m really proud of,” he said.

The prize is presented at Ullevi, where everything took off in April. The breakthrough came against Helsingborg and AIK.

“The match against Helsingborg was my first from the start, Giorgi (Kharaishvili) had been given a red card and was off, we had many injuries and I was the only one who could play in that position. The match was fantastic, we scored goals and I made a good match.”

Against AIK he took another step – and played centrally.

“The key was how I had performed in the previous matches. It took a lot of effort. I felt I could play. AIK was a big match and I was a little nervous. This came off after ten, fifteen minutes, then I entered the game.”



He has shown during the season that he has mastered all positions in the midfield.

“I’m comfortable playing anywhere. I’m best as a box-to-box midfielder, helping in the defence but also in the attack,” he explained.

Last summer he was close to a transfer to Wolverhampton in the Premier League. In the end, it was too short a time to obtain a visa. The deal ran out in the sand – this time.

After a strong spring season for Yusuf, a slight decline came in the fall.

“I got some injuries, it affected me. I think I’m back on my level. It is very difficult to play at the same high level all the time. Bouncing back from a lower level is even better,” he said.

He personally takes the success with calm.

“I was prepared for what was waiting. Among the audience, many wondered who I was, but personally I was ready for what was waiting. I’m not surprised. I knew from the start what I could and what my ability is.”

In a spontaneous “thank you” speech, Alhassan Yusuf highlights his club in Nigeria FC Hearts, the Tiki Taka Academy which took him to Sweden, football coach Tommy Johansson and IFK leader Olle Sultan.

“Without Tiki Taka it would not have been possible. And Tommy… I do not have words to describe how he has helped me, including with the adaptation to Swedish society. Olle has helped me on and off the pitch and invited me home to his family,” he revealed.

He has been pondering some of what is next in his career.

“For me, it’s just about taking steps that help me in my career. I have plenty of time. I am young and do not need to rush or stress. I can take it easy,” he says.

The contract with IFK Göteborg runs until 2022 – but will he play with the club next season?

“Hopefully. I’m really happy with the club, my teammates and everything around,” he answered.

Just look at the space afforded the Dutch attackers. See how they all squeezed themselves together all to attack just one ball... No composure, no defensive discipline... All doing like monkey-post players.

Indeed there were better defensive talents dropped for these lots.

This is all on Manu Garba. He picked this team. He selected these players. The buck stops with him and I see he will never get better. This reminds me of the rubbish he did at the 2015 FIFA U-20 WC. Dropping the better players to the bench for some mostly average bunch. Shameful!

I do not also believe in the true Nigerian talk but I will maintain my stance that the U17 should be reserved for Grassroot development. It should be prioritised because over time it has unearth gems that went on to make the country proud.

Tammy Abraham, Tomori, Solanke and a host of others broke into quality European clubs without the help of the Nigerian youth team.

However, there is a big chance, Nacho, Ndidi Success, Orji Okonkwo, Osimhen and a host of others will be nowhere if not the youth team.

So I wonder the crave for the foreign bred Nigerians to play in the u17 to deny home based players that need it more than them.

If we are to use home bred/based players, the screening model must be improved upon to become more comprehensive to harness a high breed of special players to complement the foreign bred Nigerians.
