Lazy youths will not readin the newspapers and see on television that Coacharis Group, Dangote Group, Stallion Group and several other multicompanies have started planting and processing rice in Nigeria

Parochial narrow minded youths will also not know that Nigeria really has no comparative advantage in production of rice. We will still need yo import about 50% of rice even when we produce, or do you think rice can be planted all over Nigeria because it is big.

There are other products we have comparative advantage of and we are not talking about them or even trying yo take advantage of the advantage we have. Cassava, cashew, millet, Cocoa, sesame seed, Sorghum, even yam etc are products we can use to earn huge foreign exchange but because we CONSUME rice that we don't really produce then we can close border for it.

Closed border, even those that want to export/import other products are caught up and its only rice we talking about.

Another thread for 180 million people to masturbate on. Not some technological innovation, or some breakthrough in science but a mere border closure.

A situation that requires tact to fish out the main culprits and u simply make a decision that encompasses all, even the innocent. It's only in black Africa that this calls for celebration, especially if there's nothing else to celebrate. SMH.
Ghanaians must continue to cry

I hope when the border is eventually opened it would not be business as usual. Rice that is now 28k will not come down or probably come down to 16k which was what it was before the closure and all we would have achieved was to just punish ourselves.

As the borders have been closed what has been the measures taken to help sustain ourselves as a nation?

Useless govt, always doing the right things the wrong way and then complicating the already dire situation for ordinary citizens because of lack of clear cut assessment of the situation by incompetent people who lack capacity to think through a situation or scenario thoroughly.

Hope the only thing we will gain in all this is not the self bloated ego that when we closed our borders neighbouring countries were adversely affected.

Have not heard any comment from PDP on this boarder closure.

Why do they react to only negative development, when it is positive they turn blind eye and deaf ears to it.

Is opposition meant to condemn only?

If the government reopen our borders in January then they had suffered Nigerians for nothing cos everything will just go back to normal and those who have invested massively to revive our dead industries will lost there money. So let's beg the govt to sustain the border closure against all odds for at least 5years.

When there is lack of electricity, good roads and basic infrastructure that should accelerate production and distribution.

Be deceiving yourself that in 2 years economy will experience dramatic positive turn around with this senseless border closure.

A welcome development. Although most people are feeling the heat now but if this is sustained for 2 years as opined, our economy will experience a dramatic positive turn around.

That's what they said in 2015, today $1 is N360 and PMS goes for N145 at the pump. The Nigerian situation defies all economic theories.

Dramatic positive turn around indeed.

But, being self-sufficient rice production reduces the impact on our FX reserves. A country that can feed itself can develop itself.

The next focus should be banning fuel imports and getting the refineries to work after 5 years of Buhari holding the ministry of petroleum porfolio there should be no excuse why Nigeria refineries are still working at 10 % capacity.

I don't have a lot of issues with the boarder closure as long as it is temporary and when reopened it is well equipped to follow the set out rules by Ecowas convention. There needs to be a round table too discourage Benin, Togo and Ghana from allowing indiscriminate importation of goods that are clearly meant to be dumped in the Nigerian Market. That goes for every good not just Rice and Cars. I am surprised that frozen chicken and Turkey has not come up in the discussion.

Since we are taking about boarder closure to enhance the local economy, I would like the presidency to consider taking his 15 day vacation in Ogudu or Tinapa or any other resort in Nigeria rather than taking our hard earned Fx to London to rest. That too is as bad as importing RICE. Mr. President took power as a sick man and thank God he has fully recovered after spending probably what Ogun and Enugu states spends on its entire population's healthcare needs in hospitals in London where his money is not needed. Yet in 5 years, they cannot build a clinic (Not even hospital) fit for followup treatment...... Thousands of Doctors have fled Nigeria for greener pastures because the government continues to fail them.

Mr. President rides in Mercedes S class (German) with Land Cruiser Escorts (Japan) Why can't Innoson or Peugeot be commissioned to build a presidential fleet that will use Nigerian labour to build thereby building skill and expertise. Once again you say I should eat local rice yet you are driving foreign car.

Customs boss is happy the boarder are closed good for him, but have we heard that anybody has been disciplined or sacked for allowing full container loads of contraband pass through the bad roads that lead into the country (I say bad roads to emphasise that nobody speedily sneaks a 40 ft container into Nigeria you have to go slow and pass several custom checkpoints where palms are greased to ease movement), somehow nobody customs has been arrested or persecuted for taking the bribes... Before Alhaji Alli takes the spec out of our eyes, please tell him he has a big broom in his eyes.

Leadership is by example. Same way your children imitate you. Give us something worthy of emulating and watch Nigeria become a real giant of Africa.

Perfecting the process of production and distribution should be attained to reduce the impact of a sudden border closure. Just waking up and closing the border is insensitive and not well thought out.

Banning fuel imports is the right thing to do but it only becomes the right thing if the refineries are at least working.

Imagine if tomorrow we wake up and fuel importation is banned and dangote refinery we are all supposedly banking on is incomplete.

You will be a mega millionaire very soon if you can make use of this opportunity

Did they stop you from importing any brand of cars or shoes through these medium?

China did it and succeeded
Nigeria is doing it and will succeed
The closure should remain for 3 years for local manufactures to reap the fruit of their labour
Thank you PMB

China did not do, for many years in the 2000's, the country ran a big trade deficit. If its borders were closed, how can you run a trade deficit? If China closed its borders, how then did it become the world's largest exporter of goods? Import duty on cars into China is 15%.

Forget what the custom man said, he is no economist.

I agree with your expressions of hope. If the closure is sustained for some years or perpetually, it’ll be to our advantage in the long run. It’s painful now though. But we hope it’ll be well sustained.
