Nigeria GDP is overcooked. Their non-existent agriculture and the rest of sector data are inflated. Their manufacturing is also non-existent. Look at kenya - manufacturing contribute to 20% of taxes - and makes up 9-10% of GDP - so if Nigeria has such a manufacturing - oil will not be accounting for 90-95% of gov revenues. tylann: 2 Likes |

How much is West Africa growth - not linked to minerals & hydro-carbons. Their growth is therefore dependent on commodity markets and cannot produce sustainable development needed to make a dent on poverty. Most of East Africa countries country is are growing without minerals....mostly by improving agriculture and agro-processing - and the growth has been sustained for many years now. Mkenya2019:cote devoire is not doing that bad, they have the highest minimum wage in west Africa and much more expensive than Ghana in terms of living standard generally. that is a contraction anyway.. but life is good over there averagely , foods is more cheaper ,Access to 24/7 electricity supply in urban area, Good tenant to landlord laws and a lot of French heritage building making it look like a small Paris. it is just that the development is not as coverd as it is in Ghana and is market is not as developed as such. 2 Likes |

Yes Ivory coast seem to be an exception - and it helps they didn't abandon cocoa production - like Nigeria did with palm oil - and run to cities to 'feast' on oil money. Ghana has to avoid the Nigeria natural resource curse - and keep focus on growing agriculture, manufacturing and service industries - because mining - will benefit the gov and the a few mining global tycoons. The worst - is all the offshore oil & gas production - literally leave nothing on the ground. vaxx2: 1 Like |

Mkenya2019:Ghana is seriously developing is agriculture sector. and promoting it aggressively. next year, Ghana is pumping 600 million dollar into cocoa industry. it has already been approved by parliament. out of the 600 million dollar, 5 million dollar will be allocated for school feeding , Ghana school children must consume chocolate drink particularly for the benefit of brain development as it scientifically proven. 7.5 million will be going into cocoa tourism ( promoting cocoa consumption and its intended benefit) 2.5 million dollar for capturing Asia market as it obtain form Ghana cocoaboard memo. Ghana and agriculture are like 5 and 6. they are inseparable.....it has employed more people than any profession. 4 Likes 1 Share |

Yes great ideas.I wonder what would happen if both Ghana and Ivory coast banned export of raw cocoa bans - force the Nestle & the Swiss - to at least some semi-processing locally? We also need to do the same for our tea and coffee - ensure we can do more value addition. My friend was in Northern Ghana - as agricultural expat - he had good words about Ghana. Okay the one district one factory - how does that work? What gov role in that? Is it really sustainable? Doe they generate the economics of scale/location/consolidation. I would go for SEZ - and build a couple of special economic zones - in major cities - attract Chinese to do import-substitution - etc. This is what is working in Ethiopia - and I was in Uganda recently - and they are doing very well on the same - build Chinese SEZs. Gov all it would do is provide land - and infrastructure. Africa gov need to focus on infrastructure - I saw the road btw Accra & Tema or Kumasi - it very tiny...so you gov need to plug the infrastructure deficit. vaxx2: 1 Like |

Yes about time - because the industry can easily double it's earning - and because the money will go to individual farms - that will really dent poverty in rural places - rather than hot oil money. I don't think one district one factory is going anywhere - Kenya have had such similar hair-brained ideas - Economic Stimulus - and they have failed. What works is Ethiopia kind of industrial parks. It should be one industrial park one district. Gov buys or provide land that can house several industries - provide horizontal infrastructures - roads, water, housing and sewage - and then invite foreign and local investors to set up factories. Mkenya2019:currently, both Ghana and ivory coast control about 60 percent of world cocoa beans, while west/ central africa control about 70 if Nigeria and Cameroon are included. Ghana and ivory coast have been able to increase cocoa price for their farmers , starting from next year, farmers in Ghana will be paid an additional 400 dollars on each tonnes of cocoa, scalling up the existing price of 2200 to 2600 dollar per tonnes. And Ghana produce roughly 900, 000 tonnes with a serious quest to improve production to 1.5 million tonnes in next seven years. Ghana had also try to industrialized its cocoa beans since advance nation enjoy the larger chunk of the product, out of 100 billion dollar cocoa industry , only 6 billion dollar is coming down to ivory coast and Ghana. Ghana chocolate is darker and hardy unlike the kind of soft chocolate obtain abroad. so Ghana has been encouraged to improved on the product for a continental taste. swizz chocolate market is worth over 2 billon dollar . Accra to tema road is impressive and there is construction going on right there to make it a 6 lane track . Accra to kumasi road is also under development. construction has started from Accra itself..... though the work is slow and the road to kumasi is indeed narrow..... This are some of Ghana made chocolate. it happens my friend in the west like it so much hardy and darker while the world in general want a softer taste.. 1 Like

Mkenya2019:The one district one factory initiative is just a policy Pioneer by goverment. it is really going to be implement by private sectors. govement is only providing incentives for the development. the overall project is private driving .... one of goverment initiatives is lowering tax or abolishing tax for a particular perioud of years if established in economic zone. though they still pay tax but it will only be income tax payed on staff salary .... |

Mkenya2019:one district one industrial pack is impossible. ""Ghana has over 254 district"" . even China can't try it . that will be way too expensive and practically hold revenue into a halt. since this company will be motivated with incentives as well. Having a major recommend industrial park is more practical than hosting development across major districts. there must be district known for agriculture practice and as well as industrial hub park ( where manufacturing of goods will be deployed). one district one factory is a good initiative if goverment doesn't fall ball on the initiative and policy. Ghana has is industrial park as well. it is known as ""dawa industrial park"" and many been developed. two or three as well. |

pacretus:Ghana government plans to process 50% of cocoa in country – Owusu-Agyeman December 16, 2018 General News, Lead Story Comments Offon Ghana government plans to process 50% of cocoa in country – Owusu-Agyeman Facebook Twitter Google + Stumbleupon LinkedIn Pinterest Hackman Owusu-Agyeman – Board Chairman of the Ghana Cocoa Board The Board Chairman of the COCOBOD, Mr. Hackman Owusu-Agyeman says the government is planning to process 50 per cent of the cocoa that is produced in the country. He also said government was playing its part to achieve the set target of one million-tonne cocoa production for the 2018/2019 crop season. Ghana is the second largest producer of cocoa in the world after Ivory Coast. He said these when Mr. Harold Poelma, the President of Cargill Cocoa & Chocolate led a delegation to pay courtesy calls on the Chairman of COCOBOD and the Minister of Food and Agriculture as part of activities marking ten years of Cargill in Ghana. A statement issued by Cargill and copied to the Ghana News Agency said the Minister of Food and Agriculture, Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, congratulated Cargill on its anniversary and the immense job it has been doing to improve the sector with global best practices. He said government was fully committed to alleviating socio-economic challenges in the cocoa sector and pledged his Ministry’s unflinching support for Cargill. Mr. Poelma thanked the Minister for his drive and vision towards a sustainable cocoa sector and Cargill’s contribution in that regard. He said Cargill was committed to continue investments in the sector, and that, Cargill is open to dialogue with the government to improve the cocoa sector. The Cargill delegation also visited the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) and was welcomed by Mr. Hackman Owusu-Agyemang, the Chairman of COCOBOD, who was full of praise for Cargill’s business model acknowledged Cargill’s contributions and positive impacts on the cocoa sector over the last ten years. Mr Owusu-Agyemang congratulated Cargill on a decade of innovation; touching on the installation of the fully-automated digital solar system at the Tema plant and called for cooperation towards a sustainable environment. He said government was playing its part to achieve the set target of one million-tonne cocoa production for the 2018/2019 crop season and 50 per cent of cocoa to be processed in Ghana. In response, Mr. Pieter Reichert, the Managing Director for Cargill’s cocoa and chocolate business in Ghana, expressed Cargill’s readiness for further collaborations and Cargill’s role in ensuring environmental sustainability. He also outlined the outcome of Cargill’s traceability-focused fully e-money enabled Licensed Buying Company; Cargill Kokoo Sourcing Company Limited. “Since its establishment, 13,000 cocoa farmers have benefitted from a total of GH¢6 million in premium payments and currently covers 11 districts,’’ he said. He also drew the Chairman’s attention to the unfairness in the light crop industry and encouraged the COCOBOD to take steps in addressing it. A tenth-anniversary commemorative dinner was also held; where the executives of Cargill engaged with sector stakeholders on ways to reinvigorate Ghana’s cocoa sector. It is expected that these engagements will help Cargill continue to bolster farmer confidence in the cocoa sector. Cargill was actively working with farmers to change and improve practices to curb deforestation and also support activities to promote sustainable farming practices and improve the livelihoods of cocoa farmers and their communities. The statement said the delegation also toured some communities where the Cargill Kokoo Sourcing Company Limited operates, including the Baniekrom Buying Plant, Akrobokrom and Nyinahin communities in the Ashanti Region on. “For the farmers, the visit signified Cargill’s commitment to keeping the farmer at the heart of its business. They were also grateful for the visit and expressed their satisfaction with Cargill’s innovative payment system, weighing system and savings scheme” It said Cargill had been buying cocoa from Ghana for over 40 years and in 2008 opened its state-of-the-art cocoa processing facility in Tema. Today the company has over 600 permanent and contracted employees processing cocoa products to serve food and confectionary customers locally and around the world. Source: GNA |
