ornicus:Every sane country has tight price control of essential commodities especially from conglomerates. There is no such thing as complete free market. Just imagine if NURTW nationwide decide to double their prices, what happens to inflation |

shadeyinka: can you prove this, or are you just pulling this claim out of the ether? do you even understand the implications of 'tight price control?' in these circumstances where things do not remain equal? there has been no light for the past two days. was service from the telcos disrupted? i think we should bring nitel back, so you will understand what a true incompetent monopoly is. when you start queuing by public phone booth to make international calls, your eye will clear 1 Like |

Exactly. They guy is just trying to toe populist direction and be hailed as doing something... It won't last. We all know that pricing is fixed based on the factors the telcos have to manage. Minister just be giving wrong directives upandan without considering all of these. Same way he suspended cash payments at NIPOST in favor of POS and Bank teller payments forgetting NIPOST s key to improving financial inclusion and eCommerce in the Country. ornicus: 1 Like |

The minister is behaving like an illiterate when he should focus more on regulatory compliance on the part of the telcos who engage in fraudulent promos, outright data & talktime credit scam and other types of consumer abuse right under the nose of the NCC. All the lazy youth hailing him now should not complain when he once again orders the telcos to double data prices a year or two down the line. 1 Like |

deenee: Cost of doing business, either low or high, cannot justify extortion or exploitation. I am an entrepreneur as well. You don't create wealth for shareholders by reaping people off. Don't forget that government also has a responsibility to protect her citizens, and that is irrespective of ramifications. Please, drop the price regulation argument as it relates to failure of our refineries. It doesn't hold water. Isn't OPEC regulating volume and setting price at the global stage? Why are there still functional refineries around the world? As for market forces controlling prices of oil products, the industry is different. The players are few. It isn't the same as with Agriculture, FMCG etc. Please, economy of scale makes better sense when the cost of doing business is high than when it is so low. Stop being theorical. And my big question is: why can't the telcos leave when they think the environment isn't benefiting? Why do you prefer that government turn a blind eye to the plight of millions of her citizens to allow telcos 'create wealth' for a few tens of her shareholders? There is nothing wrong with government calling for necessary adjustments to enhance value for her citizens, absolutely, nothing is wrong with that. |

Good Moves. Honestly, this Country's Telecommunication Services are wholely exploiting us with this data charges. But the govt should also reduce their tax charges to these companies too to enable them make some adjustments. I wish government of Benin Republic will take this same action because these telecommunication services is milking us dry. It's even worse here than in Nigeria. Data is more exhorbitant in this Benin Rep. than in NIGERIA. Talon should do something about it abeg |

The only way data prices can drop is if government revived Nigerian Telecoms, NITEL and provides citizens with very cheap 5G data services. This will crash the market and force others to up their game. |

They should tackle 9mobile in particular. Very crazy Telcom industry with unreasonable data price. Imagine 9mobile still selling 1GB for 1k in 2019. If this is not madness, then I don't know what it is. |

ornicus: Quite right. The unfortunate thing though is that the 'masses' won't see it that way. All they want is reduced everything. Basic economics most don't understand. I love reduced prices myself, but it's important that it can be justified and sustained economically and commercially. The so called countries with smaller population have far better electricity, don't have local government staff harassing every base station looking for money, have better ports, better roads etc, so maybe that's why its cheaper, but as usual we like to apply government fiat to everything. 2 Likes 1 Share |
