This is not about right or wrong. It’s about being wise. Whether you returned money or not, both options are neither right nor wrong, and nobody should be praised for hurriedly returning money to a source that was not confirmed. Is it because of the desperation for job that people are becoming saints overnight at the expense of sound reasoning? Are we not Nigerians again—who are used to seeing 419 schemes here and there? How can you return money sent to an unverified source, and you keep defending that even if you were scammed, you did the right thing? As for the payment, there is what we call luck. The fact that you didn’t work for some money or you didn't deserve some money does not mean you shouldn't keep the money. People were lucky to receive double payments and triple payments, and this is how life generally is. No applicant deliberately scammed people of their money; the money simply came to them from NNPC who promised to send transport allowance. Whether it would be a one-time or multiple payment was not mentioned. For people like Dangote and Otedola, do you know how much luck and easy money that came their way? So you think Dangote would have returned any easy money he received in this life, saying he did not work for it and it shouldn’t be his money? I understand people are trying to form saints here, but it is getting to the level of foolishness. Even if NNPC made mistake, was there a general SMS or email to all applicants that those paid excess should follow a procedure to return any money? Before now, all of NNPC’s messages to all applicants were both SMS and email. So why do you think NNPC will just contact only a few of the people paid extra, via only SMS, and ask them to return money? People need think before they do anything. I will say it again; even if NNPC found out that they overpaid some people, don’t you think an organized establishment like NNPC could have counted their loss and moved on? As far as I am concerned, the administration of the NNPC did not issue any directive for people to return money. Opportunists(whether they are private individuals or even NNPC staff, I don’t care) used this chance to scam people. People need to apply wisdom in life. No matter how insignificant the money may be to you, you should not help fraudsters achieve their goal. Any other bullshit comments supporting returning money to scammers will have their nairaland account suspended by me. 4 Likes |

While I understand why some are reluctant to refund the money, a little due diligence hurt no one. I was among those that vehemently labeled it a scam until I got in touch with a friend that in work in a bank. You cannot use that kind of account to run scam. Mr. wrong and wrong That the money refunded will be misused by the wrong source is still not an excuse to keep what doesn't belong to you. Being wise is knowing where to draw the line. Money that doesn't belong to you should NOT BE KEPT! - Thief There are no two ways to it, no ambiguity here, stop trying to make urself feel better by speaking English. - Thief You can advocate for confirmation of the correct account to refund the duplicate payments and go through official channels to achieve that, but don't try and sell the story of "I'm justified to keep another person's property because I don't trust anyone else to get it back to him/her" - Thief It is desperation for a turnaround from our criminally irresponsible, fraudulent mentality that's making others with better training to cry out for you people to be better versions of your present decadent selves. It is not sound reasoning to keep what doesn't belong to you, it is criminal reasoning. - Thief I repeat, you cannot be scammed out of what never was urs to keep anyways! If the source is unverified, take steps to verify it first, then refund the money. Don't just hide under the pretext of "there are many scammers in Nigeria, so unless NNPC officials visit my house, I won't refund" - Thief The fact that the reasonable expectations/thoughts of everyone who received these dual payments was that they were duplicates invalidates your self-gratifying arguments on whether it was a mistake or NNPC's deliberately sending double payments. This thread is still much alive Most of your points make good sense. well said cocococo:
1 Like |
